you need to pick another item from that page for free shipping!

edit: so 2 or more items :)

  • I got the i5 version for $399 http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/intel-nuc-d54250wykh-i…

What memory and SSD drive would be best for it?

    Thanks

    • Depends on what you're doing with the system but if you need the grunt from the i5 maybe 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD.

The i5 you have doesn't support M.2 or mSATA so you'll need a 2.5" SSD instead.

How do you get it for $399?

  • Anyone know the bare-minimum spec required to playback 4K encoded video? I don't want to invest $$ in one of these puppies and have to do the same thing again next year once I can ummm purchase 4K blu-ray discs and back them up to my NUC ಠ_ಠ

    • For 4k I'd probably be looking at the i3 since it has DisplayPort 1.2 for 4k 60Hz support.

The NUC doesn't have a DVD/BR slot so you'll need an external drive.

    • There are ARM-based SoCs that can do it. Its all in the GPU. A bay-trail atom can do it, and I believe the N2820 too.
But only 24/25/30 Hz over hdmi, of course. Are you wanting to do any software (cpu based) post-processing?

  • Hey just to confirm, can I use one of these https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/184312 as the OS Drive in any other i3/i5/i7 NUCs listed above??

    • I might be wrong, but when I was building a NUC kit at Christmas, I think I remember it saying that you could boot from an M.2 SSD or from a 2.5 SSD. I think they both load as drives in windows. I plugged an old 2.5 SSD in and it booted Windows fine, so I didn't bother with the M.2. slot and just left it empty.

      • Can it fit a 2.5" and an M.2?? or just one or the other?

    • Yes, I think so. the NUC fits up to 80mm m2 cards. (chromebox only 42mm?)

  • Kingston RAM @ MSY - 4GB $43 - 8GB $76 — So SE works out to be a little more expensive.

HDDs @ MSY - WD Blue 500GB $58, Momentus 500GB $69 (MSY $4 dearer), WD Black $72, WD Blue 1TB $82, Seagate SSHD 1TB $111 (MSY $8 cheaper) — Prices are pretty much on par with MSY

    M.2 SSDs @ MSY - Samsung 850 EVO 120GB $109, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB $165 (MSY $8 dearer)

HDD/SSD prices are ~on par~ with MSY whereas RAM is slightly more expensive. But it's still a fairly good deal considering there's free shipping if you don't feel like dealing with MSY/your local computer store. Not sure how competitive NUC prices are since MSY don't stock them and I don't keep track.

For maximum OzBargain points you'd order a NUC + 250GB M.2 (or even the 120GB) for free shipping then queue all day at MSY for 8GB of Kingston SODIMM @ $76. :P

    • yeah SE' sodimms aren't anything special. they've been that price for ages. and this doesn't even come with free shipping. so I don't really know why it's posted as part of the OP :S

Interestingly, the same processor in this $215 Intel Compute Stick Z3735F Mini PC Windows 8.1 in this deal as 7" Windows 16GB Tablet - $53 + Free Office 365 Personal 1 Yr @HN selling for $53!

The Intel® Compute Stick is a new generation of computing that transforms any HDMI display into a fully functional computer. So does the tablet with its micro-HDMI.

So no screen or speaker, does much the same job, but 4 times the price, just smaller. Just add an HDMI cable.

Good spot regarding the processor but they're slightly different - one supports max 1GB RAM and the other 2GB Z3735G (1GB max) vs Z3735F (2GB max)

Seems to be the only difference between them though (i.e. not much) and the integrated graphics quoted have the same specs too. The tablet also has mini-HDMI out and a cable is $3-10 from MSY depending length/gauge.

      • Yes, the one here has the 'F' processor like the ($179 @Aldi) 10" Tablet I'm using. The one in that deal has the lower resolution 'G' processor, as discussed in the deal.

Kodi 14 Video Playback on Intel Atom Z3735F Computers Running Windows 8.1

The device was connected to LG 42UB820T, a 4K UltraHD television, but the maximum output resolution supported by the box is 1080p60 (1920×1080), so that’s the output resolution I used for testing.
Let’s get started with videos samples from samplemedia.linaro.org, plus some H.265/HEVC videos (Elecard), and a low resolution VP9 video:
    H.264 codec / MP4 container (Big Buck Bunny), 480p/720p/1080p – OK
MPEG2 codec / MPG container, 480p/720p/1080p – OK. But XBMC reports decoding at 24 fps, instead of the video native 25 fps.
    MPEG4 codec, AVI container 480p/720p/1080p – OK
    VC1 codec (WMV), 480p/720p/1080p – OK
    Real Media (RMVB), 720p / 5Mbps – RV8, RV9, and RV10 – OK, but at 720p and 1080p video is played at about 22 fps instead of 25 fps.
    WebM / VP8 – OK
H.265 codec / MPEG TS container – 360p and 720p OK, 1080p video is not really watchable (15 fps), and audio cuts.
WebM / VP9 (no audio in video) – OK
Followed by some higher bitrate videos:
    ED_HD.avi – OK
    big_buck_bunny_1080p_surround.avi (1080p H.264 – 12 Mbps) – OK.
    h264_1080p_hp_4.1_40mbps_birds.mkv (40 Mbps) – OK
hddvd_demo_17.5Mbps_1080p_VC1.mkv (17.5Mbps) – OK, but plays at 24 fps instead of 29.970 fps
Jellyfish-120-Mbps.mkv (120 Mbps video without audio) – OK (using USB hard drive)
