Should be noted that in all likelihood, this is a Pendopad, given that they have identical user manuals.

      Pendo
      Unisurf

      • Woops… labelled the links the wrong way round.

        • +1

Most of these manuals are cut & paste from MS anyway.

But likely most of these cheapies are same, just rebadged. I'm using an Aldi 10" with a better processor ('F' instead of 'G') than the 10" Unisurf from HN.

  • +1

I had a look at this today and noticed the resolution was squished - it is only 1024x600 but with a virtual 1280x800 emulation type mode. RAM utilisation was 88% and only about 6GB of storage left. It is quite small and I suppose $53 for a Office running machine isnt too bad on the go with decent presentation capabilities.

    • Yeah, the problem is capacity is small, only less than 6GB left after upgrade. But you can use Micro SD up to 32GB and there is cable in the box for connecting usb, so you can plug in any usb 32GB or less. I think for a windows tablet with this price, this is quite worth the money. The resolution is not so good and word is quite small to read. However, watching videos and youtube is great. You also can upgrade to windows 10 in 29/7.

      • Unfortunately not everything can be moved off to the SD Card (I own a couple of similar devices). For example, Dropbox and other cloud storage doesnt allow you to use removable disks for their client/sync applications, so you will have to almost fetch the file every time from the cloud that requires internet bandwidth. As for Windows 10 - well, lets see. Chinese Tabs like this really dont expect much life or upgrade and given you are left with only 6GB, the upgrade will be painful if you have any sort of app installed.

      • I got this on Tuesday and set it up, installing all the windows updates, etc.

I only have 2.7GB left out of around 9.x GB on total (not sure where the other 6GB is, recovery partition?)

At this rate I don't even have enough to upgrade to Windows 10 even with nothing installed!

Is there a way to get that 6GB back or some other way to free up some space?

edit: But overall surprisingly good for a 50 buck tablet! It's pretty snappy and smooth to use.

Downsides are screen, which is the worst I've ever seen, the small available space (<3gb usable after windows) and poor battery life on sleep (pretty much drains in one day)

  • It is a good deal. I would have bought this if I was in the market. I already purchased a 8 inch Chinese tablet with dual OS (Windows 8.1 + Android) for $88 from geekbuying. I think they are selling a similar tablet for $99 at the moment.

    • What model is it? Do you like it? Was it much hassle with bloatware/language?

      • +3

I have a 8 inch tablet which sound similar to what motor89 have got. Its Chuwi vi 8 and cost about 110 AUD. Some review said that there might be some dead pixels. Non on mine(lucky me?). There were no extra software's installed. Its battery life is pretty bad. 5 hours max using it and I usually shut it down to save battery as it take quite lot while on standby too. I don't really use much android part, always on windows 8.1. So cant say about android but windows runs very nice as long as I have free ram. 2gb is not that good for multitasking and I don't like memory hog google chrome on it. But IE 11 works great.

I have 64gb SD card in it and steam + few steam games on it. I am using PPSSPP emulator on it and it runs great. I play bully at high DMC 3 and tomb raider at low. Tomb raider gives less than 20 fps but I can lower resolution than 800x600 to make it smooth enough. Dota 2 runs at 20-30 fps, not good enough for me to play. Gta san andreas, modern combat 5, Dungeon hunter 5 and asphalt 8 run flawless on metro apps.

1280x800 on 8 inch looks very nice. No complaints about display. Screen size and touch can be problem due to my big fingers and small close and new tab buttons. But there is a software to make touch screen a touch pad to solve all my small screen related problems. Few days ago I updated drivers for touch screen which messed up the touch screen completely. I would touch inches away from where I really touch so I had to roll back the drivers to fix this.

        • Excellent, thanks for the info!

  • +1

what you should do with this is use the hdmi, usb/blue tooth kb mouse, connect out to display and you essentially got a windows box at bargain price abit limited by the ram

    • Can we turn off the tablet screen after connecting it to the tv via micro hdmi? if yes then yes it definitely serves the purpose of Windows tv box.

Also i found another Tablet reviews with same specs except that one is Pendo pad 8" with 1gb ram

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muMdYXEKz8M&feature=youtu.be

      Looks promising…

      • -1

Don't touch the Pendo pads… you'll find plenty of scathing reviews here and on Whirlpool.

        • +2

Most from people making the mistake of comparing it to a $500 or more device

      • you can do that but you need to do it at every boot as far as i know, this is windows as below, anything is possible.

        • +3

My Surface display is left off whenever it's connected to an external display and it persists after reboots. I can't see why this would be different.

  • +1

If the Office 365 subscription comes on a card like my Toshiba did then you can ebay the code for $53 (exactly what mine sold for). = Free tablet for the kids

    • $25 cash back is after 365 activation.

    • +6

I had this one, the office is installed and you need to activation by proof of purchase and photo of activation screen to claim.

  • Crap specs (screen wise) and the OS… but still a damn good price!

    • +7

Yeah makes a great digital photo frame, kids tablet or even a spot of battlefield 4 on max settings because anything is possible when you are on windows.

      • +3

What is that about all is possible because window? Two people said the same but I don't get it.

  • +2

Played with it earlier today. Screen is pretty bad unless you're looking directly face on. Off angle slightly and colours really wash out.

But, was pretty nippy opening windows, responsive too.

I would have bought if there hadn't have been a huge queue in the shop, or had been any staff interested in helping me find a boxed one,

Well worth a punt at just over 50 bux

    • Face on isn't that bad for a tablet…

      • It's kind of bad but for $50 can't expect much. Good for a windows tablet and it's hard to notice when streaming games to it.

        • Sorry probably want that clear, but I meant that you are usually face on using a tablet anyway.

Problem is even face on these leave a lot to be desired, and turning them to portrait they are terrible. Still for the price of a raspberry pi they may be quite useful, have 16gb or ram (not sure how much is free), and truly fly with the processor they have. Only complaint so far is the screen. It's borderline not use able but I haven't tried tweaking yet

    buy 2 for $40.50 each.

Sign up to Harvey Norman Newsletter and Get $25 Voucher (Min Spend $150)deal here from trent86 post.

    sign up here

    $78 * 2 tablets = $156
    $156 - $25(newsletter voucher) = $131
    $131 / 2 tablets = $65.50 each
cash back of $25 per each tablet = $40.50 each

    • +1

Thanks man..Just bought 2. Had that voucher in my inbox since 26 may. Used it today.

      Paid $131 for 2 x tablets.

1 for kids to play games/youtube etc
1 as Ip cam monitor/recorder etc

also can someone please confirm, do i need 2 separate receipts to claim $25 cash back?

      • +2

having a look here at the T&Cs

Point 7 of T&Cs states "Multiple claims permitted, subject to the following: (a) only one claim permitted per eligible Product purchase; and (b) each claim must be submitted separately and in accordance with claim requirements."

      • So you can make 2 claims using 1 receipt right?

        • Just submit 2 claims with scan of same receipt submitted twice. Make a note for each explaining what you are doing. Should be fine.

    • I did that…thanks

    • bought 2 as well.. thank you

      • Can you activate and claim both cashbacks using one office account?

    • The 2 for $40.50 each hack does not work anymore (at least it could not be replicated)

      • So you are saying the store will sell you 2 tablets online, but when you enter the welcome discount, it just refuses to subtract the $25? That seems strange.

I prefer my $28 tablet hack anyway. It may still work.

Why would you want 2 of these, given the problems outlined in this deal?

        • Yeah these are shite really…opened up the other box and its used! No USB cable either..going straight back to Harvey Norman…also they won't support my other non functional one so.I have nice 40$ paperweight now..

        • +1

          @poop:
          Double :-(

  • +1

Yes i posted it in the pixie deal posted earlier but assumed it would have been posted already if the ozbargainers thought it was any good! I picked one up today, and it seems to work ok for what it is! better than I would have imagined for full windows with full office for $53 anyway! Even comes with a 1.5A usb wall charger!

  • Does this have a GPS? Might be good for in the car

    • No GPS for sure.

  • I dunno about these sub $100 Winders machines … can you even do things like browsing or watch online video properly?

    • Can it also play 1080p YouTube or kodi?

    • +2

Absolutely. This is Windows, not Android.

My first laptop was a 512mb Windows Vista machine (2008) and I used it for Office, Internet Browsing and watching movies. The processor on this is far superior too.

  • +1

Yea can this output 1080p via hdmi to the tv and will it lag with simple browsers.. Or YouTube.

    • Expect it to lag with google chrome. With IE11 no problem. Output 1080p no problem. (checked on unisurf 10.1 inch. Have same specs but different screen)

  • can anyone confirm this plays hearthstone ?

  • Is it possible to install Android on this?

    • Not native dual boot, but you can use Bluestacks to enable support.

      • +1

I would not recommend that. If you want android buy android for 50 dollars. easy to find. I have used lot of ways to run android on windows 8.1 tablet, without need to switch to restart to switch to android. Virtual box, genymotion, blue stacks etc etc. They are also laging.

  • -3

So after one year can't use office suite? Can't really call it a deal. One year is nothing

    • You get $25 cash back for registering it!

    • +2

You can if you pay a subscription for another … time period. Think it's 7 bucks a month which includes unlimited (meaning limited) One drive use.

Actually come to think of it this tab costs less than a normal years Office 365 sub lel.

      • Don't stress about onedrive limits, the upload speed is too slow in Australia to ever hit any limit

  • +1

The 10" but similar spec Win8.1 unit without 365 sells at Aldi for $179!

Same Quad Core Atom Z3735G, 1.33GHz, 1GB RAM, micro-HDMI output, no GPS.
Screen is much better at 1280 x 800 IPS. Has OTG cable.

If you only want mainly a desktop experience, this deal should be adequate.

I've got the Aldi on my desk connected to a $130 24" Samsung monitor, with $1 Microsoft Wedge keyboard & $50 3TB HDD (all OzBargain deals). Just lacks a Bluetooth mouse. All works well.

Am considering returning the Aldi for this much cheaper deal. Well I'm not keeping Aldi.

    • That Aldi seems identical to the $172 HN 10" with good reviews.

    • Error: seems to be tiny 32GB limit on HDD plugged in via USB! I plugged in a 3TB while posting, it whirred away, but had not checked - "USB device malfuntioned". Tried 1TB, same message. 32GB worked.

Next to useless as can't access my files on those HDD.

      • +1

Have you tried looking at it through diskpart or the Disk Management utility? My Teclast X89 can handle a 1TB hard drive fine through a powered hub.

        • +1

          Thanks octagonalman.
It's been years since I've used a Windows (XP) system.

2TB now working after reboot of tablet.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

          diskpart
From start, type in cmd. At the prompt, type in diskpart. You might be prompted for additional permissions here. Once you get past that, you can "list disk", "list volume" etc.

          Computer Management - Disk Management
I think this is only available on administrator accounts. If you open up Control Panel and type in the top right search bar "disk", there should be a search result with create and format disk partitions. That will give you a graphical representation.

Of course, do check your power requirements.

        • @octagonalman:
Thanks. A reboot did the trick ;-)

Have mothballed my desktop pc years ago & have used Android phones. It's hard to get my head around a system I used to know so well.

I'd know how to access that on earlier Windows, but am struggling with Win8.1.

Had read you can plug in any usb 32GB or less above.

      • Sounds like a power supply problem. Or possibly lack of NTFS support? Nah, power.

        • +2

It's a powered NTFS formatted HDD.
The HDD powers up, is detected, …

And now it's working after a reboot. Crisis averted ;-)

Any chance you can give me the winning numbers for tonights lotto draw?

    • +3

Sorry - mind is gone today…

  • anyone tried Ubuntu?

  • Great deal.

    Well done OP.

The 8" is $108 after cash back. It has a separate DC charging port and power adapter.

This means you can use the USB port for whatever (keyboard, mouse, flash drive or all of these with a USB hub) and still have wall power plugged in, which may be important if you want to use the HDMI and connect the tablet to a TV. No plugging and un-plugging between videos.

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/ipads-surfa…

BTW, thanks for the long weekend Lizzie II, happy birthday :-)

  • Pulled the trigger on 2 thanks to the tip from Altomic. Just wondering, can the usb cable be plugged in for kb/mouse at the same time as the charger?

    • +1

Nope. Only one Micro USB port (so you'll need an OTG cable). Something like this will allow you to plug in a USB device and charge it however: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Charging-Data-Cable-USB-Type-A-Fe…

      • +1

Those cables don't work with Windows tablets. It's been confirmed many times. You need to get the ones with the switch.

Connect devices in "OTG" position and then switch to "charge".

        • Did you view the eBay device?
          Image 3 shows that switch!

        • @brucefromaustralia:

Image 3? It only shows me 1 image…

        • @kamoi:
I'm on the phone & can swipe to 3 more images. Shows 3 more images to view below main image in desktop mode.
It even has text to explain the operation of the 3 position switch in image 3.

          @brucefromaustralia:

Nothing like that there for me.

Are we looking at the same listing?

        • +1

          @kamoi:
          Sorry :-(
I skipped a few lines in re-reading this deal. Totally my fault.

          Totally agree with your comments.

I didn't read this second cable had been added. I was referring to the $10+ cable posted earlier just above that cable.

      • I'd be wary of trusting ebay descriptions for cables like this.

A few people on Whirlpool tried to do the same with the Pendo 7" Windows tablet and had no luck.

        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2316166

        • +1

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/141365361542

I bought the above cable for my Pendo 7" back in February after an OzBargain member found that it could do OTG and charge at the same time.

I guess Whirlpool didn't get the memo :P

        • @kamoi:

          Ozbargain > Whirlpool

          Kamoi > undead

I too have the Pendo 7"

been trying to fix this for months

          thanks heaps kamoi :-)

          where's my ebay login?

        • @kamoi:

A few quotes from the Whirlpool thread I linked above re the cable you linked:

          "this USB charger/host splitter works"

"it doesn't charge at the full rate"

"While doing word processing with Wi-Fi on and the screen set to 80% brightness, it basically just about held its charge."

"When I dimmed the screen to 20% brightness and turned Wi-Fi off, it supplied a steady charge"

Three different people in that thread tried the cable with "mixed" results.

I wonder how it will go streaming video over wifi for extended hours.

          I guess I will find out :-)

  • Hmm 7"… I have 5.7" mobile, and 15.6" laptop, I feel at least I get something in the middle say 10" not 7"

    • +1

There is the more expensive $172 HN 10" with good reviews on HN.

For comparison with this deal, that's about the price of a monitor more expensive for desktop use. (Bought my 24" Samsung for $130 in a deal a while back)

    • I have a 6.4" phone and I still bought one of these :P

      • But didn't vote.

        • +3

Does it matter? There are no prizes, and already plenty of votes to bring it to the front page.

        • +1

It's just a pet hate of mine that members go to the greater effort of writing a comment, letting us know they took advantage of a deal but don't do the thing the OP would appreciate more, which is upvoting the deal.
There actually are prizes - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/181365
          Annual Awards - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/175890

        • +1

          @luke73:
My ambivalence with this deal is showing ;-) (no +)

          • Good price, HDMI output, works well with larger screens (based on my trials with 10" equivalent), takes powered external HDD which my cheap Android tablet won't

          • likely poor screen, Win8.1 which I am not used to - so a learning curve

But mainly struggling to find a use for it. My Win desktop hasn't been used in years. Just connecting the equivalent Win8.1 tablet or the desktop to the internet consumes a fair bit of data in updates tethered from my phone. (That could be limited.)

I've had the 10" on loan for 2 weeks & barely used it :-( Just using Windows again is enough to stop me. And I've lectured in IT.

And I've been considering it since yesterday! Meantime stores are selling out.
