OzBargain 2014 Members' Annual Awards

2014 is finishing up in another week and a bit. Continuing our tradition from last year, let me announce the OzBargain Members' Awards for 2014. The stats used here were generated from this morning.

Deal Poster of the Year

TRENT86 — this award is for the OzBargain who has posted the most deals in 2014. TRENT86 posted 727 deals with vote average of 22.91 this year, where 221 of them got onto the front page. Trent has been on fire since September, posting average more than 4 deals a day. Most popular deal this year? Telstra Prepaid Starter Kits for $8 from Harvey Norman.

Competition Poster of the Year

JSQUARED — competition-posting on OzBargain has gone through a re-design in the middle of this year, and this award is for the member with significant contribution to posting competitions on OzBargain. JSQUARED has posted 178 competitions so far this year, two have been featured the most popular (Tap King and Optus luck draws) with over 100 reported winners between the two.

Rookie of the Year

DAOtmc — this award is for the best contributor to this website who only joined us this year. This is especially hard to pick this year, but DAOtmc stood out. Joined in May this year, he has posted 44 deals with vote average 36.61. His most popular post this year — 2 for 1 Grill'd Burger.

Commentator of the Year

jv — it's for the OzBargain who had posted the most in comments this year, and it's the you-know-who again. While contributed merely 4 deals, he has participated in 3,451 threads with 7,271 comments — 42% more than last year (which he also won the commentator of 2013). Classic replies although occasionally informative. Others got voted to obvilion.

Helpful Member of the Year

scrimshaw — awarded for OzBargainers not only post comments, but helpful comments. Our not-so-scientific measurement of "helpfulness" is via the votes people received on their comments. It's also scrimshaw's second year winning this award, posting 2,669 comments this year, 17.5% of them getting +5 votes and 3.5% getting +15 votes.

Power User of the Year

tonester — this award is for the power users who have contributed the most in editing the deals and fixing up issues. They played a significant role in keeping the deals updated on OzBargain and helped the moderators to focus on moderation. If you still aren't sure what they do, check out some of tonester's recent edits — edit #1, edit #2, edit #3.

OzBargainer of the Year

I guess most would have already guessed… tightarse!

Joined OzBargain in January 2010. Posted 563 deals between 2010 and 2013, and then in 2014 — 579 deal posted with +99.83 vote average. From the interaction we have with TA, he does not just post lots of deals, but high quality deals as he is someone who cares a lot about his "craft". Some of his most popular deals — PayPal $5 credit, $0.01 Multi-Function Saber Card, compiled Shop-A-Docket vouchers #1 #2 and #3 etc. I believe many of us have benefited from tightarse's posts tremendously this year.

Prizes

I'll be contacting all the winners later today via PM. Top prize "OzBargainer of the Year" will get $1,000 PayPal credit or gift cards, and all other prizes will get $250 reward.

Our monthly awards for December will be announced in early January 2015. Until then, wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Congrats to most of them for their significant contribution with one exception (You-know-why).

  • Wow… congratulations! :)

  • Congrats to all the winners.

  • Congratulations guys!

  • well done guys

  • +1

This is great, congratulations to the winners. And thanks also to Scotty and the mods for their great work on the site!

  • +128

I'm at a loss for words right now… this is just too much. Thanks to everyone that supported my posts throughout the year. This is without doubt the premier bargain site in the world. Nothing else offers what Scotty & team have given us. I hope to continue providing you all with great deals in 2015.

To Trent86, JSQUARED, DAOtmc, jv, scrimshaw & tonester - well done! And let's not forget the mods scotty, neil, hamza, moocher, aaa & foundit who provide unheralded support to keep this site as good as it is.

May you all have a safe & happy festive season with friends & loved ones.

    Merry Christmas! TA

    • +2

lol i just saw the prizes bit. hory shet, erhmahgaahhhd etc

    • +15

Maybe if I post Udemy and eBook deals I will win next year… Oh wait they are a waste of time and effort.

        • +17

Sorry man but its the harsh truth. I don't think I have heard of anyone paying for a Udemy course as they are always free or will become free in the future. eBooks are the same except on the iOS store where you have to pay for titles.

I think next year the Ozbargainer of the Year should be voted for by members of the community. This would be a lot fairer and respective of the communities view. I don't think a vote average should determine who gets this title; rather it should be based upon other factors like user interaction, forum discussions and the whether they reflect the true spirit of an "Ozbargainer".

This is just my two cents anyway. Congrats Tightarse on winning this title and thanks for your time and effort posting deals :)

        • +9

@ShamelessBargains: the community vote is a really good idea
and would also work well for monthly awards.

      • +17

Just saying, if you scroll through TightArses' list of posted deals, he's done A LOT more than that. JUST. SAYING.

        • +4

          JUST.SHOUTING.*

      • +5

I almost agree with you. TA's most frequent deals are free Udemy courses or free Amazon eBooks. By seeing the up votes on those deals I always wondered do people really think they are bargains. But every time I think TA's deals are crap he surprises me with an amazing deal like $5 Paypal credit 0r 1c Gearbest deals.

Having said all this I still think TA deserves the member of the year award not for the quantity of deals but the quality of some of the deals he posted. Quality is a subjective opinion so this is just my opinion, there might be others who think the Udemy course deals are quality deals.

Congrats and thanks TA and others. Keep the good deals coming in 2015.

      • +10

Please note that none of the top voted deals I have linked in my original post are free ebook or udemy courses.

      • +4

I've found useful stuff in both amazon ebook and udemy deals. If TA only posted them this might be valid criticism, but there have been a lot of great deals.

      • Gee you sure aren't shameless despite that nick …

    • Congrats on a well deserved award.

Hope you take a break ( when kit kats are on sale) and give someone else a chance :P

    • Bravo Zulu TA

  • +3

    congrats guys.

If there are further awards for cleo ozbargain bachelor of the year i'd like to nominate myself :P

    • +18

Have to wait for April next year for the launch of OzBargain dating site.

      • +16

        OMG YES. OzBae.

        • +16

Best Bang for the Buck. That should be the description of the dating site.

        • @AznMitch: Cant wait to see what 'bargains' this proposed dating site offers, lol……I am already starting to worry!

        • +1

@cim85: 2-in-1 packages. BOGOF, etc etc. :) The possibility is endless.

        • +15

@AznMitch: And the inevitable comments: "stay away, not genuine", "cheap, but took forever to come"

        • +3

          @Thrift:

          10/10 would do again.

        • @Davo1111: How much do they normally sell them for? Is it a bargain?

        • @AznMitch:

          Best Bang for the Buck

          Best Bang from the Buck

  • +6

Great job everyone. A very well deserved list.

  • +4

Well done everyone, all worthy winners for different reasons, certainly deserve it for all the time and effort you put into this site and to have made it such a great year.

  • +3

Congratulations all! Some tremendous effort displayed in the stats Scotty has used to determine all the winners. Well deserved :)

  • +30

Congratulations to all! I need to thank my moderation team to keep everything under control, and all the awesome members here making this a great community. There are many other great contributors on OzBargain — check out our monthly awards for those outstanding OzBargainers.

On a sadder note, which I didn't post in the main post:

    • theearth, who was the deal poster of the year last year, has decided to leave us. His last deal post was June this year.

    • miss turnip, whom many would remember being very active in forums this year, has disabled her account in November. She would probably have won the "Helpful Member of the Year" from her comment vote average.

    • I miss miss turnip :(

    • +1

Aww, what happened to the two that caused them to leave?

      • +1

        They got ozbargained

      • So what caused her to leave?

        • +1

She didn't give moderators a reason sorry.

      • +2

No idea. When people want to close down their account they used to need to contact the moderators. Now you can go to you account settings's page and hit the "Deactivate Account" link & put in a simple reason to disable your account. We have people disabling their account every week for various reasons — 63 of them from the last 30 days when I just did a database query.

        • 24 says "Other" — they might not want to state the actual reason.
        • 10 says "I do not know how to use OzBargain"
        • 9 says "I have another OzBargain account"
        • 6 says "I do not feel comfortable participating on OzBargain"
        • 3 says "I spent too much time on OzBargain"
        • 3 were probably disabled by the moderators (persisting trolls, spammers, etc)
        • etc

As of theearth — he is still around but no longer posting deals here at OzBargain. turnip disabled her account with "Other" as reason so we might never know what happened.

    • Have noticed the main contributer on Buckscoop has the nickname 'Earth'… coincidence? Joined there on 5-9-2014

    • +1
      • miss turnip, whom many would remember being very active in forums this year, has disabled her account in November. She would probably have won the "Helpful Member of the Year" from her comment vote average.

      a belated welcome back :)

      • +2

Oh wow. LOL. Thanks everyone. naww. and cheers tonester.

Didn't realise my weirdo disappearance would be so obvious, derp. Guess it'd be superfluous to explain but it was never a problem with OzB :) Just needed a forced-break from a lot of things in life. How annoyingly vague, right? :P (mental health stuff, gotta take some time off to be kind to yourself I guess, blah blah blah).

Thanks for the kind words guys. I missed knowing what discussions were happenin'. Always got a big fat opinion around here lol… I wouldn't call them necessarily 'helpful' :P ha

        <3

        • welcome back

  • +11

Waiting on jv's comment so I can give it a congratulatory downvote…

  • +6

Thank you to everyone this year, it's been quite a warm welcome to the OzBargain community. Learning really quickly however that people like TRENT86 and TightArse are definitely the top contributors. Always seeing TRENT86 and TightArses' deals on FRONT PAGE, ALWAYS for a good reason.

Definitely also want to thank the moderation team, they definitely keep OzBargain working and looking great. Thanks for choosing me guys!

I hope everyone in the community enjoys a Merry Christmas, and prosperous holidays. As well as a great big Happy New Year soon to come!

    • +1

      What about EasternCulture

He took out the major award last year… a great contributor, and has helped me enormously with some of my posts :)

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126862

      • Ok TA,

        Fair call.

        Cheers.

    • +2

The awards were given based on some of the stats I run through on the 22nd of December. Based on the data I've got, EC didn't come up in top 5 of any category (came 7th in number of deals posted, 6th in most number of deals getting onto front page and 7th in number of comments posted excluding moderators).

Not denying that he has been a great contributor to this community, and he did win the OzBargainer of the Year last year.

  • +3

    Do I get a cut?

    • Nah that it reserved for the King, KingTightarse.

  • Nice prizes.

  • +2

While I do not wish to provoke personal attacks I did a bit of research into copying deals and apparently quite a few of the top posters have been copy pasting from other deal sites/ community forums without any attribution. I don't have any problems with reposting deals but word for word is saddening for me and I hope we move in the right direction with the issue in 2015 and OzBargain stays relevant as ever.

    • Fair comment. Whilst I don't think this issue is directly relevant to this thread, we agree with your statement and are aware of such incidents. This issue was raised by Scotty here and various posters were spoken to about it since directly. As always if you have any specific concerns about recent posts then use the report button or speak to us in TWAM, we are always happy to have a chat and want to resolve any issues.

  • +1

Congr8s to TA and all the other winners!
Thanks for all the efforts. Cheers [_]p

  • Congrats to all of the mods, TA and everyone else on a fantastic year!

Now I understand why jv posts so much :P

  • +9

jv getting paid the princely sum of 0.0344AUD per post….not a bargain.

    • -2

      tax free…

  • Grats fellas, well done :)

  • -1

TA and JV should now join OzB Board of Directors

  • Congratulations and thank you to all the winners for making Ozbargain what it is.

Big thanks to Scotty especially, you've kept Ozbargain great for so long. Awards like this and huge charity donations really prove how much you're giving back to the community. Can't say enough how much I appreciate how well I think you run this site.

  • Congratulations to all the winners, and moderators of the site. Thank you for all the helpful deals and wish we have an even better 2015.

  • Keep it going guys. Well done

  • Tightarse - the Donald Bradman of Ozbargain?

  • magnificent performance again (all) posters - award winners are truly extraordinary! Bring on 2015.
