OzBargain 2013 Members' Awards

As promised, we are going to bring back regular rewards for our most active members on OzBargain — to reward them for their hard work, and also to show gratitude to their contribution in the community here. We will bring back monthly rewards later in January 2014. It will happen at the end of each month based on the stats. Which stats? What kind of rewards? I won't reveal them yet. It might be different each month, but our aim is to reward more individuals for their commendable work here.

As for this year — which is just two and half weeks to go — we will run this one single event, awarding prizes to some of the biggest achievers at OzBargain in 2013. So drumroll please and here we go…

Deal Generator of the Year

theearth

This is rewarded to the member that posted the most deals this year. theearth has posted 817 deals since 1st of January this year (not counting the dupes) — that's on average 2.36 deals per day & 200+ deals ahead of the next runner-up. With an average vote of +21.09 and 186 of them got onto the front-page, these aren't random bargains either. What a great job! And please please don't leave us!

Rookie of the Year

WNK

This is rewarded to the best contributor who joined us this year. I think we are all familiar with WNK by now. Joined in April this year and has quickly shared some of the best deals on OzBargain (many great Android apps and Udemy free courses). He has posted 383 deals with +36.98 votes. Looking forward to more great deals from WNK in 2014.

Commentator of the Year

jv

'nuff said. Almost 4,800 comments this year (and probably more by the time I finished typing this post up). Some of his classics — yes jv did it again. He is also the one with most comments that got -5 or lower — 244. As OzBargainers we all came to love and/or hate this guy. Imagine a day without reading jv's comments…

Helpful Member of the Year

scrimshaw

Being "helpful" is quite subjective, but then again I am the one giving out prizes so I get to pick. scrimshaw came top 5 in the number of comments posted. Amongst the top 5, he has the highest average votes. +5/-5 ratio (number of comments with +5 or higher votes vs. number with -5 or lower votes) is high at 176 (100x of jv's at 1.75). That just means someone who has been helpful in comments, careful trying not to get into flame wars or posting trolling comments, etc. That's the kind of behaviour I would like to see from more OzBargainers.

Store Representative of the Year

ShoppingExpress

This prize is rewarded to store representative / merchant that post best deals and are interacting with the community to provide support and listen to feedbacks. Out of all the deals posted by ShoppingExpress (the rep, not the store), more than half of them got onto the front page (44 out of 85). They have also posted over 1,300 comments this year participating not just in the deals they posted, but also ShoppingExpress deals posted by other community members. They should offer a course on Udemy on "how to be successful on OzBargain" (for free, of course).

Power User of the Year

roughana

For those who don't know what the power users do, here is a wiki page for you. They are the ones armed with extra editing power to fix up bad title, bad descriptions, bad tagging, etc in the deals and forum posts on OzBargain. The top 3 contestants for this prize are all pretty close, but roughana won out because of his recent effort in fixing up deals.

And finally we have

OzBargainer of the Year

The prize goes to … easternculture

What can I say? This MS Office deal got the most votes this year (+894), getting the most clicks (37k+) and received the most page views (99k+). Another deal of his also got into the top 5 of most clicks and more page views (determined by our Analytics reports).

But Eastern is far more than just posting one shot wonders. Throughout 2013, he has also posted 600+ deals with +34.31 average, 244 of them got onto the front page and posted 3,100+ comments, with +5/-5 ratio at respectable 5.75.

Thank you to easternculture for your contribution at OzBargain!

Prizes

I will contact all the winners in the next couple of days regarding claiming the prizes, which would be in the form of gift cards or PayPal credit. Top prize "OzBargainer of the Year" will get a $1,000 reward. All other prizes will get a $250 reward. Except for the "Store Rep of the Year". Our model rep should have already gained lots of customers and sales from OzBargain already :)

        thanks mum… :)

I always think of the infamous Bunnings deal whenever I see WNK's name, great stuff.

This jv comment deserved a lot more votes, makes me smile every time I think about it.

    • +13

Someone needs to compile quotable quotes from jv, get him to write the forward, publish it on Amazon Kindle, make it free for a limited time and it would be the deal of the year…

    • +2

When WNK first join, he was posting a lot of deal in quick succession and most of them was garbage. I think he was some sort of spam bot until that Bunnings deals. All his deal improve drastically since then. I guess he learn from his mistake. Good on you WNK and keep up the good work.

My mind is blown. Twice. Once by the fact I actually won a prize (Thanks Scotty! And to all the moderators that work here) and the fact that JV also got awarded (Congrats JV!!! May your posts ever be in bold typeface and bargain posts have a price in title.)

But gotta hand it to EasternCulture for his quality posts — he must either subscribe to a LOT of newsletters, reads every one of them or is probably a bargain-seeking bot. I'm suspecting the latter.

  • Well done all, definitely deserved! Keep up the good work guys and a big thanks to Scotty and his Mod Squad for making all this happen in the first place.

  • good work all round.

Well done everyone !! It is an honor to be among the winners of Ozbargain 2013 Members' Awards.

Winning "Ozbargainer of the year" was a total shock and unexpected. It took me a few minutes to process that. But it is indeed .. a Big honor.

I would like to thank all members for your support. i would like to also thank Scotty for all his efforts in making Ozbargain a True Success as we all wouldn't be here if it wasnt for Scotty.

The biggest Joy is just knowing that all the deals that have been posted by members have benefited the Ozbargain community and saved us , not only in Australia but also worldwide, substantial amounts of money.

Again, thank you all for your hard work / contributions and looking forward to a new year "2014" full of awesome bargains.

Congradulations to all the winners and wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Hurray~~feel so previlleged & honoured to have won in this ozbargain competition! :)

Thanks to the whole ozbargain community for supporting our deals - our deals will go under the radar without participation & support from the community, please save more money to spend on our site,

Special thanks to Scotty, Neil & ozbargain mods that provided this platform and made this a successful bargain site :D, please continue to provide this awesome site for everyone.

    &
Last but not the least I want to thank the whole ShoppingExpress team (accounting, customer support, listing, logistics, marketing, purchasing) actually are what made my deals/post work (I am just a puny poster of these deals). Everything starts from a deal but what keeps it successful is the whole team's coordination to deliver what's promised/expected from each deal.

We promise to keep delivering awesome deals and service for as long as we can :).

    Yours Truly,

    SE

P.S Gotta make this lengthy "speech" as it's the first & want to make it special :).

    • +3

        SE

        • How about a special secret "OzBargain-only" deal for this special occassion? winkwink*

    • Cant believe you didnt get anything

      • +1

Probably 100000 newsletter subscribers - even if they didn't buy anything yet, the ShoppingExpress name is getting out there.

        • I believe it also works both ways. People will keep coming to ozb as long as there are good deals, which in this case are posted by the rep

      • thanks everyone for supporting us till date - As a way to show my appreciation, we are planning a big promotion in the coming weeks before the new year, please feel free to PM me your wish list and I'll try my best to compile them and integrate into one of our promotions. The ones that got the highest interest will more likely be featured.

        Suggestion offer ends on thursday.

        Regards
        SE

  • Great work all ozbargainers who contributed positively to make this one of the best bargain websites for the community. Keep up the good work. Wishing all a Merry Christmas and happy festive season.

  • Congratulations to everyone who has taken out a prize. Some massive contributions there!

  • +13

Oh wow. Thank you very much. This is a totally unexpected honour.
I'm just doing what I can to make the deals more accurate and give relevant info in the summary where necessary.
    Congratulations to the other recipients.
Thank you to Scotty for creating a place for us all to get extra value from our spending. (Let's face it, nobody is saving money here… we're just getting more for our dollar).

    • Actually just wondering how you edit someones post? Dont hang out on many forums this is probably it, so just wondering how you do it? Do you report it as an other and say hey can this be changed or just write stuff in the commenting area. Ive got a feeling everyones going to think this is a stupid question.

      • At the top of each forum post or deal, there is an edit button that is available to the OP, moderators or power users. If someone has edited a deal you'll see Edited by.

Moderators get many reports of titles and descriptions that need editing. Unless there is something we need to point out (moderation issue) we won't write any notes.

      • Thanks for that neil. Im a bit of a forum etc noob so thanks for the info :)

        • +1

roughana is a power user and can edit other peoples deals. Only certain members have this capability. This reduces the number of edits the moderators have to make to deals. I hope this clarifies things.

  • Wow :)

Congratulations to everyone who has won the awards. Everyone in this list (plus many more) contributed so much to this community and deserves their rewards! I am very thankful to every one of you.

  • Well done to all

  • +2

Well done guys, inspires me to become a more active member…

  • +12

Thank you very much for selecting me for this award.

I would like to thank all OZB fellows for supporting my posts. Thanks to Lurker and Dealman for giving great help for finding Udemy coupons.

Special thanks to Scotty, Neil & OZbargain Moderators for creating and continuing the best bargain site Australia.

Well done everyone and wish you all Happy Holidays,a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.

    Cheers,
    WNK

  • Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you Scotty for Ozbargain, and to all the members who have made it what it is today. Hopefully it will continue to grow exponentially in the upcoming years, and early happy new year to everyone.

  • Where is theearth? We don't mind you use a new nickname themoon etc and tell us "bargain of the morning is here" again.

    • He is still posting deals / bargains for us.

  • +1

Good work guys. I'm not at all surprised that you all won. Your names are the ones that always stand out the most amongst the crowd here to me, for various/nefarious reasons :P

    Congrats guys!

  • +2

    JV you done it again!

  • Good to see regular rewards coming back!

  • Congratulations to the winners and thanks for making this a great site :)

  • Congrats easternculture!!

  • Good on you Scotty, for implementing the rewards & Congratulations & thank you to the winners and everyone who takes the time to make Ozbargain such a haven for bargain hunters like myself. Till I signed up here, I was fed up of paying ridiculous prices but thought that was the norm for folks Down Under.

  • Congratulations to jv and the other winners.

Whenever I go to Coles now and go through the vacant trolleys looking for discarded docket deals and fuel vouchers, I think of the comment about members trying to spot jv looking for receipts with movie ticket items on them.

  • +1

    Congrats y'all! :)

  • +1

Well done to all the prize winners; each one well deserved. Here's to another great year in 2014. Merry Christmas, and a safe festive season to all Ozbargainers! Take care.

      • I believe shopping express should be stripped of the 2013 award based on the way they have conducted themselves during the boxing day sale. I was one of the unlucky chumps who stayed up all night until 3am on a night off to purchase a N54L microserver.

At 3am sharp I added it to cart and before I finished paying on paypal it was already sold out.

In a previous post by the merchant shopping express on the same deal, it clearly states that they want to 'sell' and that 'reasonable stock levels' would be available. They posted the deal several days prior to allow us to 'plan' our purchases and avoid site crashes which I thought was a great idea. Little did I know.

Many other ozbargainers suffered similarly last night, and have posted on the thread. Thich is obviously not the end of the world, making people stay up late, but it's a mind game and a ploy that's just down right nasty.

I appreciate that they've done a lot and posted many deals this year, and I know I sound bitter, but that doesn't give them the right to abuse and lure customers like this.

Thanks for making my Boxing day public holiday so enjoyable.

        • +1

Thanks for addressing the concerns on the ozbargainers. I take my comment back.

But maybe next year don't put such low stock in the middle of the night.

          Regards.

  • Well done to all the winners and well done to everyone that contributed to OZB this year.

  • Well done everyone, even those that didnt make this exclusive list, thanks.

  • I just saw this thread…

    I'm lost for words…

    • I'm lost for words

      Deep breaths jv, deep breaths.

      • maybe jv can find a cheap deal on paper bags and use one to help the breathing problem!

  • Can't believe I just noticed this. Congratulations to the prize winners and to all those that have made a contribution to Ozbargain.

    • I cant believe you just noticed this as well… considering its past half way though 2014!!! bring on the 2014 awards!

I'm looking forward to going to a awards dinner, where I can use my KFC vouchers, dress up in my cheap Van Huesen shirt buying cheap wine by the dozen to drink! and that's just on the discount tiger flight up to Sydney. or UBER taxi ride… depending on price…

or I could just stay at home and watch it on my Google glasses… which would make me feel like I was there.
