  • Totally agree… when will tablet/phone people learn that you can't do 16GB unless it is expandable, and if not, you gotta start at 32GB… Good find for those that don't use a lot of apps, etc.

when will tablet/phone people learn that you can't do 16GB unless it is expandable

Different people have different needs. I, for one, can survive easily on 16GB of storage despite using many apps.

Totally disagree… When will tablet/phone people learn that you can do anything with 16GB even, if it isn't expandable. You could even start at 8GB… Good find for those that don't want to store their whole entire music and HD movie collection on one device.

I have never filled any device i have ever had with enough apps to fill it (and i use a lot of apps). What makes me laugh is when people say, oh, i cant survive with only 16gb and when i ask them why, they go on some diatribe about their music requirements for all their overseas flying and constant Perth/Sydney return trips they do. Buying more storage space on a mobile device is like buying a 12 bedroom house because you own 12 beds. You dont use them, but you have them, so you need somewhere to put them…

16gb is ample room for hours upon hours worth of music and a few HD movies in case you get sick of just listening… Then there is the ebooks you can store and a heap of apps and games.

If you want to pay a huge premium for double the space, just so you can store more crap than you will ever require in one typical sitting with any mobile device, have at it, you go get that 32gb model… Me, I'll just empty mine and refill it with what i need on the day… oh the chore of it all…

      • I use my FiiO for music, haven't found a tablet/phone that offers as good of sound quality.

        • Fiio X1, X3 or X5? I've always wanted to grab X1, they looked decent for the price. Of course, whether you think it's worth it would depend on whether you want a dedicated MP3 player.

        • @AznMitch:

I have an X3. I listen to only flac files, and I guess whether it worth it or not comes down to how fussy you are with music quality. A good smartphone is good enough for most people, especially if you are listening to music in noisy environments like most people do.

        • @Ronnnie: I've heard good things about X3 (especially on the sound quality). Though, I've never been the target audience (all my headphones are open and my earphones are not exactly the the nicest one). Also, I have a DAC/AMP combo that works alright as well (that could actually take USB OTG input, but I already have the thing set up with the PC). .

        • There's some pretty amazing internal DACs these days..

        • @jackary: True, but phones and tablets are still behind the dedicated MP3 player in some areas. Something like output level, noises, output impedance etc etc, phones and tablets tend to be worse. It's not necessary for them to have something amazing in that area and it's harder to create something that's thin, light, and doesn't have interferences from other components. Also it really doesn't help that Qualcomm has the biggest share and the DAC they use are not decent. This said, I do agree that the DACs used nowadays are very good (Never tried anything above Snapdragon 600, so I am not sure about Qualcomm but Exynos was alright). It's just that what I've said is something that's needed for "audiophile" headphones (Even though the market trend is changing, a lot of expensive headphones still require a decent output level) and earphones that uses BA.

Also, this is not really related to DAC or anything like that, but playing FLAC files can drain batteries. So having a dedicated MP3 player helps.

  • I bought this from a Telstra store for $399. It seems that franchised stores don't sell them.

    • Is that the normal price or did you have to price match?
It is listed for $479 on the Telstra website

      • That's just what it scanned at. Either the 20% off is available in stores, or their retail price is lower.

  • You can use usb sticks with micro SD ports if you want. It's what I use on my 16gb nexus 7 when travelling. Load a 32gb otg stick up with movies and shows and off you go. You could connect a usb hard drive if you really wanted. The joys of Android.

    • I have 2012 nexus 7. Can iI do same?only can see power port. I've nfi !

      • +1

Yes you can use an OTG cable to plug a USB stick in on the 2012 too.

        • thanks!

  • Is this actually a "Google Nexus" device?

    • +1

      Yeah, it's a Nexus device.

    • yes

    • What do you mean 'actually'?

Google has used Samsung, LG and HTC for their Nexus devices…

… So HTC Nexus and LG Nexus etc. are all correct. They are all Nexus devices, made by Google through the manufacturers.

  • 16GB and no expandable storage? No thanks! NAND costs peanuts these days, 16GB is a joke. There's probably only around 11GB usable as well. It ruins an otherwise good tablet.
I grabbed a 16GB Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 a few months ago for $338 on sale at JB. Stuck a 64GB MicroSD in and installed CyanogenMod 12.1. I love it, but I still wish it had more internal memory. I'm rooted so I can move a lot to Micro SD, but still.

    • If its anything like the 16gb nexus 10, its actually 10.2GB ;)

100% agree with you on the storage argument though. It'd nearly be the cheapest component in the damn thing.
