  • Would this fit in the Acer laptop from JCHifi?

    • +5

Yes it's the standard 2.5" 7mm drive so will fit fine into that Acer laptop

      JCHifi

      JVHifi? :P

      • Baby WiFi?

    • Holy HiFi?

  • is their any additional hardware required to add this to a desktop pc?

    • +2

      probably a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor/caddy

    • +2

If you have removable hard drive trays they should support 2.5" drives or if there are trays but no 2.5" drive support just tape it on. Otherwise use double-sided tape or Blu Tack to mount it somewhere flat like the bottom of your case next to the PSU if there's no bottom fan mount or on top of a HDD cage/behind the motherboard tray.

Most pointless thing I did when I got my first SSD was buy an adapter for it - eventually got rid of it and went with double-sided tape then transitioned to Blu Tack as it was easier to remove.

        Apt username :)

    • Just chuck it in. There's no moving parts in an SSD so no need to keep it nice and snug like a HDD. It'll be happy to sit anywhere.

is their any additional hardware required to add this to a desktop pc?

Anybody who needs to ask this question should also be told that these are not just some auto-plug and play thing that automagically makes the computer faster.

They are only of significant benefit if the Operating System is loaded on them. That means migrating everything across, perhaps also resetting the boot order, changing BIOS to ACHI (if not already set), ensuring the OS is set up correctly(TRIM etc), and also changing things so that "storage" type data (eg: documents) is written to a platter drive if one is installed.

      • all of the above is pretty obvious

    • so it would be able to placed in the case in the spot where the floppy drives used to live

Also do they just use standard sata connectors?

    • dunno about using tape in a computer case, the heat can affect the glue I've found.
maybe some small cable ties or velcro strap could also be used.
blutac sounds like a good idea if the desktop just sits there.. I guess it would manage the heat well.

Guess I could have been clearer - instructions should've read: strap the SSD to the removable hard drive tray with tape if it doesn't have support for 2.5" drives.

No issues with double sided tape since it was some 3M I had lying around. It took quite a bit of effort to get out of the case when I wanted to relocate the drive so I just decided to go with Blu Tack afterwards. I've got mine mounted at the front of the case on top of the bottom hard drive cage (the spot in this picture) so heat isn't a real issue since it's right in front of the intakes. It's not as if I've strapped it onto the backside of a 290X :P.

    • BTW, since the idle power usage of this is relatively high (0.6 watts), it may actually be better suited to a desktop than a laptop. — http://www.anandtech.com/show/8407/ocz-arc-100-240gb-review/…

Anything like this 2.5" to 3.5" adapter will do: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

KitGuru OCZ Arc 100 Death Challenge

    Important points to note:

    1. When the two SSDs died, Windows was unable to find and read from them. This is totally different from the often claimed SSD advantage that when one dies, the SSD will become read-only to give you a chance to recover data.
    2. OCZ rates Arc 100 write to 22TB, so dying at 300+TB is a good bonus.
    3. Product warranty is 3 years but Australian customers pay both forward and return shipping charges.

Interesting read. With any normal use it's hard to think any drive would ever reach anywhere close to 300TB let alone the ~700TB that the last drive hit before it failed

      Thanks for the link!
      Very interesting.
(can't find the video of the death of the 5th yet?)

I still can't get used to these TB thingys.
You see 22TB's and I think that can't be much… but it equates to 20gb/day for 3yrs !!!
      Yikes !

    • The above-manufacturer specified endurance of consumer NAND is not exclusive to OCZ SSDs. See my post here.

If you're buying a current-generation SSD you really don't need to factor in MBTF/Total Writes unless it's going into a Server/Enterprise environment.

    • I have one dead OCZ 128GB SSD sitting here

guess it's no good if I need to pay both forward and return shipping charges.

      • Just return it to the shop where you bought it from. The shop then has to pay the return freight.

        • bought it 2nd hand but it's under 3 yrs old for sure…

    • has the 5th one died yet??

    • +1

      Ozbargain it!

      • Its obviously not correct. I'm surprised that its not been pointed out earlier, I only typed ssd into static ice

        • Will they honor it? xD

  • Rep, if you are monitoring this thread, any chance of restocking these before sale ends?

    • Looks like they're back in stock now but currently cheaper at MSY if you have a store near you, as per my other post here

  • Bugga! i had 1 in cart but got distracted, now its out of stock.
