We’re really excited to let you know that now you can download Windows 10 IoT Core Insider Preview, with support for Raspberry Pi 2.

Windows 10 IoT Core is a new Windows 10 edition for low-cost, small-footprint devices that is available free for Makers.

We’re also excited to announce our partnership with Arduino, making Windows 10 the world’s first Arduino-certified operating system. Learn more about Windows Remote Arduino and Windows Virtual Shields for Arduino and get started here.

What you need for Raspberry PI 2 Setup:

  • Windows 10 Insider Preview - must be a physical Windows machine (not a VM).
  • Raspberry Pi 2.
  • 5V micro USB power supply - with at least 1.0A current.
  • 8GB micro SD card - class 10 or better. (We suggest this one or this one)

    Any bargain?

This is product which has been available for a few weeks in preview form, that has been announced a while ago will be free upon release.

I get that some people might find out about it here, but it appears to be the thin edge of listing every Linux/BSD release as a new 'Deal'.

  • Retail will be out soon tho as free upgrade anyway

    Why is this a deal?

Windows 10 IoT has as far as I know always been planned to be free, you just need the right hardware to use it.

    Note:
you do not need the raspberry pi 2 to use windows 10 IoT, it is compatible with a few others such as intel galileo gen 2

  • This is good news.
But can it play most media without app purchase?
OpenElec works well but is basic.

  • This is just a development platform right?
I don't think it is a proper OS like Ubuntu on the Pi. No desktop or even a shell included.

    • Windows 10 IoT allows you to turn the raspberry pi into a device that allows you to turn lights on wirelessly or record the amount of cars passing a certain road intersection, but it doesn't allow you to watch videos or anything else a normal OS allows you to do. Basically Windows 10 IoT allows you to turn your home into a smart-home

    • Correct Windows 10 IoT is an extremely limited OS that is in no way comparable to linux on the Pi.

  • I get these emails because I signed up to be a device a year or 2 ago so I could get a free board (there was another deal posted back then). Did anyone actually get a board from them?

I can't remember if it was Intel or MS giving the boards away?
