Remember, the LG G3 was $391 a few weeks ago.

  • +3

Not anymore, I want a G3 but only Kogan have it cheap at $450 delivered, might have to go N5.

    • +1

You got to be nuts to buy this phone now, it's old and expensive and battery life is shocking. The LG G2 beats this phone in just about every category.

      • +2

        … except support.

The benefit of the N5 is virtually every app etc. has been tested on it, since virtually every developer has one. Plus you get the google OS support, which at least to date, as been good.

LG G2 is still back on 5.0.2

  • +4

Just be aware, I currently have a nexus 5 and issues with the power button (hardware issue),

try google it.. it's a global issue

It's a great bang for buck phone, but quality wise, you get what you paid.

    • +4

I had the same issue, if you contact Google they'll replace it with a refurb one.

I've had 3 replacements all with issues, either randomly rebooting or not booting past the android logo even after resetting many times.

I'm trying to get a refund now since I've been without a working phone for a whole month. (Lucky I have a work phone)

Not sure if I want to put the refund towards the nexus 6.
Any opinions on the nexus 6?

      • +1

Don't buy the Nexus 6 from Google play. It is about $300 more than a grey import

        • Yes, but if you need to replace it (as many of us have needed to replace our Nexus 5s), then that $300 easily becomes worth it.

        • @seanmurphy1994:

So why not just replaced it with a very import and save yourself $300? Paying 300$ extra for anything is not worth it.

        • @HandsomeMonkey: Because Nexii purchased from the Play store have a genuine no-cost warranty.

        • @seanmurphy1994: 50% of the item cost for a warranty doesn't add up

      • +4

So you buy a brand new phone, you end up with a refurb one. Good deal!!.

      • I've just upgraded from a N5 to a N6, two totally different beasts. Motorola have done a very good job with the N6, beware if you haven't actually seen one be prepared to get used to how BIG it is compared to the N5.

My first N5 had issues picking up 4G and 3G 2100 (I didn't realise until I travelled to a country that only had 2100 3G, was using 850 Voda 3G here so it was never an issue), Google happily replaced it no questions asked.

2nd one has been great, have never had the power button issue with either of them.

I bought my N6 from DWI and so far so good, I only got it earlier this week and have been too scared to use it properly until my case and screen protector arrives from Amazon, so it's just been sitting around the house connected to WiFi - but it seems so far a brilliant piece of kit.

I agree that buying from Google Play you get that piece of mind warranty and ease of replacement/return, but I think the N6 has a lot less issues than the N5 did, and it's already been out for some time now so it's unlikely you're going to get one of the first batches off the line that had problems like with the N5. I decided to take the risk and buy a grey import this time.

      • I had a battery issue with mine after about 14 months. Booked it in for a warranty replacement, Google couldn't find a refurbed unit for a month. After MUCH wrangling they ended up telling me I'd get a refund, which I still haven't got in spite of it being received by them a month ago.

The issue with "refurbs" being non functional is pretty common - they really don't seem to have any idea what they're doing service-wise.

    • +24

On the other hand, I've had zero issues with mine. Love my nexus 5.

      • I have zero issues with mine also, and have purchased about 10 of these at work. No issues whatsoever.

        • +1

negged for stating my positive experience with Nexus 5s? people must hand out negs for anything these days..

    • +5

I've had my Nexus 5 for almost a year and a half now and have noticed no issues whatsoever. Don't make this the reason not to get the phone

      • +2

I had mine for almost exactly a year and a half, then this exact issue suddenly started happening. Thankfully got it replaced, although the first replacement didn't function as a phone and the second replacement now has a dodgy touchscreen.

    • +1

That explains everything! My phone has been resetting on me constantly whenever I press the power button. I thought the drop 4 months ago caused it.

    • +1

Just got mine replaced by google, after 1.5 years. Had issues with the screen. Back light stopped working, had to press on the back of the phone for it start working again. Till it completely stopped working

    • +2

Yep I had the power button issue where it would restart randomly and constantly.

Had a refurb one sent to me. The refurb one was just as bad if not worse because the sound didn't work at all.

Called them again and they sent me another one which which ended up having accelerometer issues. The accelerometer would stop working sometimes but was fixable by restarting the phone. Slight annoyance but minor issue and not worth the trouble of calling them again.

    • Same with me. Had the phone replaced 3 times before getting a refund. It would be a great phone if it wasn't so unreliable. From what I have read lots of people have had issues with this phone. I would definitely get a G3 over this.

  • +4

Best phone I've owned so far. Average camera and battery life but everything else is spot on

    • +2

I'm curious to know what other phones have you owned, and what makes this the 'best' one?

Not tying to start a scene, but I've a Nexus 4… a solid and sound device. But its performance is as good (and sometimes laggy) as my Samsung tablet. In other words, it's 'normal' for me, and not the 'best'.

      • +4

nexus 5 is a significant improvement from the Nexus 4…

        • +2

I disagree where you said 'significant improvement'!

The Nexus 5's camera and battery life were still mediocre, and hardly any improvements over the Nexus 4's. Performance wise, the Nexus 4 was already pretty nifty and smooth; a general user probably won't notice difference with an updated CPU. Software wise, they are identical with the same features…

If there was a 'significant improvement', the Nexus 5 wouldn't have a mediocre camera and battery life; those issues were pretty much the only issues of the Nexus 4.

        • +3

          @inose:

Good reasoning there. I must agree with your points, I also have a Nexus 4 and was looking at upgrading to Nexus 5, but after comparing both decided there was not much between them and as the N4 is still running great and have still not had a bad drop causing glass to crack, decided to stick to that and skip a generation. Did get a real temperred glass protector in case of drop :-)

When you compare your N4 to a Samsung Tablet, what model are you referring to, as there is a big difference between an entry level Tab 7 and a Note or Pro?

        • +1

          @ozhunter68:

Oh yep no worries, I've come to the same conclusion with the N5 ;)

          I've a Galaxy Tab S (10.5).

As an owner and everyday user, here's a short review:

          Pros:
          * TouchWiz (though this isn't the latest S6 TouchWiz) doesn't contain the bloated crap that it had previously, and it has features that I wish my Nexus 4 had! ..including:
          * 'Do not disturb' mode. Stays quiet during my set hours of 10pm - 6am.
          * Multi-window, for two apps on one screen. I use it everyday, and most apps that I use (YouTube, Chrome, Reddit, Instagram, Pinterest, Evernote, Hangouts, Gmail, MX Player etc.) support it. It's a new iPad feature (on a high-end iPad), but it's been a Samsung flagship staple since the Galaxy S4 days, even before Microsoft Surface. It's pretty much 'perfected', or else I wouldn't use it / recommend it.
          * Screen, obviously… vibrant, or dull / 'realistic' as you like with the settings. Also, a very high resolution. Awesome for videos.
          * SD card support, and side facing stereo speakers.
          * As smooth (or laggy) as my Nexus 4.

          Cons:
          * Build quality (is very good but) compared with Samsung's new Tab A series (which is fully metal), it 'flexes'. (Doesn't creak nor flex very much, but there is a noticeable difference).

…nvm spending too much on this. Recommended? Yes.

        • @inose: Camera and battery although mediocre was still a huge improvement over the nexus 4. I have both and the n5 pretty much has about 30% extra screen on time with the same usage. The camera on the n4 was practically unusable where at least on the n5 day light photos with hdr+ are amazing comparable to other flagships of the same gerneration.
The screen is also heaps better on the N5 where the nexus 4 screen was really dull.

        • +1

          @ko0l:

          Thanks for your input mate.
Camera wise, I'd say my Nexus 4 is still a 'decent' shooter. It wont win ANY awards, but it's very usable in the daytime (as with any other camera for that matter), and it's 'OK' to 'pretty much useless' at night… definitely not 'practically unusable' (but how useful is the Nexus 5 at night?). As an indication, I use it for my overseas trips :)

Based on that, it's my opinion that the Nexus 5's camera (which, from reports (and blind tests from PhoneArena), is still mediocre, and very lame compared to the Galaxy S4 of that generation) isn't that much of an improvement.

I can't complain about the screen of my Nexus 4. It's an average LCD screen I think, and I can't say that it's 'really dull'; Nexus phones have been known to be 'realistic', i.e. dull, compared to the Nexus 6 (or other AMOLED screens). And from what I've seen in stores, the Nexus 5's screen never impressed me with its higher resolution (can't see any pixelations on my 720p sceen) (…nor vibrancy, as you say :) )

Battery life… My Nexus 4 lasts a day with my usage (and Battery saver mod on. Must be charged without it.)

I'm just a happy Nexus 4 user. I haven't owned the Nexus 5. I've just read a lot on it… and my opinions are based on those readings. Cheers.

No doubt that the LG (Google) Nexus 5 is a solid device…

But I think it's too expensive now, considering the cheap Chinese phones you can get. (Yes, I know… LG, vs some Chinese brand, but still…)

e.g. Remember that deal before? 'Elephone' p6000, which is similar to the N5 in specs, but less than $200… it also has SD card slot. (And also the price of the LG G3.)

I'll be very happy if the Nexus 5 was $250 or less, but at this price and time, it's a no for me.

    • +4

Could not agree more. Take a look at the new Lenovo K3/Note for around AU$200

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/196056

    • +1

Yep, it is an average phone now.

The good thing about it vs the cheap Chinese phones is the abundant software support from Google and third party ROMS.

      • Support from Google, what do you mean by that?

        • No, Google have little customer support. The Nexus 5 is supported with Android software updates, though.

        • @RedHab:

Oh you were talking about the Nexus… Yes, absolutely agree.

    • I paid something like $450 about 20 months ago. Tend to agree. That with the warranty issues and a number of known (common) faults with batteries and the power switch make me wonder who'd buy one at this price.

  • +2

Got a Nexus 5 myself. Subpar camera. Great in perfect lighting. Screen is great. Speaker is horrible. Can barely hear anything. Battery is average. Software is fantastic. Phone is a bit outdated by now but still very useable and fast.

  • +3

I've got the Nexus 5, and have been having lots of small issues, apart from that it's been a very fast, easy and quick to use phone. Battery is average. Colour and lighting is great.

I've just started getting issues with the power button and it constantly restarts.

I dismantled it and fixed the problem with the power button (the white inner button) with the screw driver by tapping it a few times to help dislodge and loosen it, but now it's stuck on the Lollipop loading Screen, suggesting it's caught in boot loop.

I've tried factory reset, but I will need to flash the phone and see what happens.

Would not recommend now as there are much better options out there.

  • +4

Pretty old phone now. Would definitivly wait for another lg g3 promo.

  • +1

just received my second refurbished replacement n5 from Google due to power button issue someone mentioned above.

the replacement has a strange issue of not able to pick up my WiFi signal at channel 12 and 13.

not sure if I should let this one go or chase a refund from Google…

  • my mums had no end of problems with this phone. Like people have already said, it was working fine until it suddenly and randomly turns off and on etc and reboots.

Sent in to google for a refurb, seems fine but within a week it had the same issue.

    2/10 would not recommend

    • +1

No idea why you were downvoted.

  • +4

I upgraded from Nexus 5 to G3 a few weeks ago and I haven't looked back since.

Had problems with my Nexus 5 not even booting up and had to get it refurbished… Then a few weeks later it was restarting by itself and having power button problems.

Don't hate because people here are telling you about their experiences… Bought this phone for like $450 on release and have plenty of problems with it.

    • +3

Mine also started having serious battery issues about 6 weeks ago after being perfect for 16 months. Standby is fine but doing anything else at all kills the battery in less than a minute, can not use it unless attached to mains power permanently.
Fixes suggested by Google were to remove all apps, turn off GPS WiFi and Bluetooth… so it's not a smartphone any more!

      • -1

Well replace the battery then, they do have a lifetime, you know?

      • That was the issue with mine. Google couldn't even find a refurbed unit to replace it with, and a number of the refurbed units also are known to have issues.

  • I bought the phone at the start of 2014 and it has been working perfectly since then. Recommended buy, but be sure to look at other phones in the same price range.

Battery life was an issue at first but once I flashed/installed kernel it easily lasts a day.

  • +8

Too old to be $369 now.

  • Check last DWI deal. Faulty phones

    • +2

I once got a faulty iPhone directly from apple, so I should -ve apple deals?

actually this happened twice with iphone 4 and with iphone 6 plus

  • +1

Using one to post this. Great phone. Battery is not the best, but I don't know why people complain about the camera. It's more than capable.

  • Had mine for about a year and a half. Not an issue to speak of. I particularly like the form factor - it's really nice to hold. The rubberised back on the black one is also excellent for grip and aesthetics.

Battery easily lasts me a full day. Camera is not the best, but only because there are a few phones out there with ridiculous good ones these days. Very happy with it - can't see myself upgrading until it breaks.

  • +1

DWI knows how to post dodgy deals…refer to galaxy s5 post

    • +1

Is this the post your talking about?
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/194147

      • -1

No..the japanese model one…many features dont work and thats becuase they are disabled in their custom rom space x

        • So you neg this because the Jap version of the GS5 Didn't work for some people? You do realise this isn't the GS5? Also there have been plenty of phone posts from DWI Since then with no complaints. I personally have posted 3 in the past 2 weeks

        • +1

The custom ROM is not theIR custom ROM. It's just the one they used cuz it officially states it supports Jap GS5 models. Unfortunately, its very bugged and incomplete. Lollipop 5.0 just got released for the scl23 on 9/6, so if you revert back to stock and update, I'm expecting good things. I will be testing it myself in the near future..

Edit: and if anyone does not want theirs, pleasr contact me :) I want another

        • +1

@bao28: interested in what comes of that stock revert, post please :P

        • @skelty:From what I have read returning phone back to stock will lock the phone. Not game enough to give it a go.

        • +2

          @skelty:

I have already reverted back to stock. Alot of bloatware that are used within Japan, like earthquake warnings and earthquake readers etc. lol other than that, everything is working fine, just another galaxy s5

I haven't had time to update it yet though… Currently running on 4.4.4 Kitkat

        • @bao28: cool thanks for that

        • +1

@bao28: Could you please point me to a noob's guide to reverting this phone back to stock. Thank you.

        • +1

          @unity1:

Using Odin, I reverted it back to the August 2014 firmware found here
          http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SCL23/

          which is SCL23KDI1BNG3

Using the November one, I had no reception, which is why I had such a bad headache with this phone. However all is good with the August firmware, haven't tried the 5.0 Lollipop yet.

edit: This is a good link for reverting back to stock http://www.androidrootz.com/2014/05/how-to-unroot-galaxy-s5-…

        • @bao28: Thank you so much. I agree this phone is one big headache.

My phone says the baseband version is SCL23KDU1BNE4 and android version is 5.0. Not sure how it got to 5.0 as I haven't run any updates on my phone.

  • Just a warning to anyone buying phones from DWI. I bought a G3 from them and it was opened and had damage on the rear cover. They advertise their phones as new but then send you refurbished stock. Buyer beware.

  • why are people still buying legacy phones, we have so many new 4g bands, the nexus5 production stopped long ago so it's all refurb or old stock. I like how nexus products have a very clean version of android and I also have a nexus 7, but few manufacturers cater for the bands we have in Australia except iphone6 Samsung s5 Samsung s6 and a few others. Do people consider which 4g bands are supported by phones? I rarely see it mentioned in the deals

  • Tempting… But still too pricey, especially considering the next Nexus phones (the "grandchildren" of the Nexus 5) are just around the corner… It is also worth considering that Android updates for the Nexus 5 won't be issued for much longer, as it was released in October 2013 and Google usually only release updates for up to 18 months for Nexus devices.

    http://ausdroid.net/2015/05/26/rumour-google-to-concentrate-…

    • 24mths actually, next update is guaranteed. But probably won't receive anything after that. I think it'll still be supported longer than lg g3, sgs 5 etc.

  • Really great value for money when originally released. The hardware is still good even compared to the latest and greatest phones. Take the G3 as an example, the G3 actually offers inferior performance despite being a generation newer. That being said google had to make compromises to offer cutting edge hardware at such a low price for the time. Inferior build quality, smaller battery and average camera compared to it more expensive alternatives are the common complaints.

I personally don't see this price as being a good deal now. There's many alternatives out there that arguably offer better bang for Buck with less compromises. If you have the patience and believe the rumours the 2015 model of the nexus 5 could be a real flagship killer this gen. That's the one I'm excited for… I really want a phone where I don't have to wait 6 months for the latest updates.

  • Didn't N5 owners face camera green tinge issue when taking photographs (clearly seen when taking a photo of something written on a paper)? I have changed N5 three times with Google and each of them had this issue. My friend had N5 and his phone had the same issue.

  • DWI is the worst online company I have ever dealt with.

The customer service is unbelievably bad. They only have a phone number for taking orders and then all warranty correspondence is by email from their 'RMA' team in Hong Kong.

I have been trying to get a 'dead' Moto G phone repaired since the 29th January. It has since then been returned three times without even being able to be switched on.

Avoid this company! They are not dealing with for any amount of saving. The risk is just too high.
