Hey guys, looked this up on Newegg and there's some comments mentioning that you can't take the drive out and use it on a PC? Anyone care to confirm?

    • +3

I confirm it! U cant take it out to use it as a normal harddrive

      • +4

all WD pocket drives you cant do this (has been like this for at least 3 years)
its another issue if it dies because it just makes it that little bit harder to try recover data from it.

        • Would that (if it is dying) be the only reason you would want it to be internal? I picked up 2 new blue WD 1TB drives (internal) on the weekend for their normal price of $69. Not really a point here except that IF the drive in this deal could be opened and used as an internal, would it be worth it? I am uneducated on it, just curious if there is potentially something better about this drive than the WD I grabbed on the weekend? Ta.

        • @seamonkey: you have done the right thing by buying proper internal drives as you maintain warranty. Plus some of these WD drives have the USB board soldered onto the drive and as such can not be removed anyway.

        • @Logical:
yes because of the usb being soldered on - if you break the usb socket (which is definitley possible) then even though the drive is 100% ok - you cant get at your data anymore.

other type drive - you can crack open the case and at least get your data back.

        • @Logical:
Thanks. Yeah was struggling to see the deal. Can get the WD 1TB for $69 at MSY. I imagine this is a good price for anyone wanting external though.

        • hehehe. 1TB external drive
          http://bit.ly/1CczLam
          Don't pay $199.99!!!
          Ok….., I wont, thank you. :)

    • avoid these drives like the plague.

      • +4

But I have never actively tried to avoid the plague.

        You mean Toshiba and Seagate?

WD drives are solid same as Hitachi

        • Agreed.

Only drives Ive ever had issues with are Toshiba and Seagate.

I have an old clunker WD 1Tb external with rubber corners, that after a solid 6-7 years of daily abuse and travel is still going strong. Not to mention the 12Tb server with WD Reds in it. Never an issue.

Mind you with such big companies and quantities sold, there are bound to be horror stories both sides. I just seem to always be on the 'wrong' side with Seagates especially ;).

    • Probably not updated yet!

      • +2

So can't PW with OW until the website is updated

        • Why not take the catalogue in?

    • Photo on box shows 2TB!

  • i think this is part of their Thu (cheap Thursday) sales starts tomorrow?

    • +1

If you have the add from the paper, that might work as long as there is stock. Worth a try.

  • Bought Toshiba 1TB Portable $69 last week from OW. should have waited 1 more week for this ?

    • -1

IMHO, should have bought a 2TB portable for around $110 to make it $55 per GB

      • That means extra $55 when you can survive with 1TB for next couple of years. What at waste of $55

        • You paid $69, I paid $110… so that is a difference of $41…. not $55.

        • Still Waste of $41 if you don't need it.

        • +3

$55 per GB is $110,000. I don't have that sort of money

        • +2

@Click_It: good spot, my bad, typo. Should be $55 per TB

        • +4

@ozyboy: this is OzB, who cares if you don't need it ;-)

        • @Logical:

All good, knew what you meant.

I was expecting mass negs for writing my reply to be honest :P

    • +1

Yes you should Toshiba drives are of poor quality. Toshiba laptop + HDD diead after 13 months.

They are so bad its like there's timebomb then deliberately go bad after 12 months warranty

    • Don't like the Expansion Drives..Bit Bulky.

    • +2

I won't recommend Seagate neither. Hitachi (now owned by WD) is better

  • Good one:)

  • is this USB 2.0 or does it support 3.0 too

    • This WD drive support 3.0

  • Is there a 2TB on special? (sorry, a bit off topic)

    • yep

      2x 1TB lololol

    • +1

Post indicates the special starts tomorrow.

      • Yeah that was updated after I commented

  • +1

got 3 of the WD last time from officeworks, 2 of them are alive one dead…

  • Is this hard drive better than the Toshiba 1TB Canvio USB3.0 Portable Hard Drive ?

    • Probably.

(identical in function, but the WD's have a rep for being mmore reliable).

  • -3

Please do not go anywhere near WD drives. They are cheap for a reason, always have been. I am speaking from experience (I have a stack of these that have all failed). You have been warned. Do some research as well if you want, they will all tell you the same thing. Goodluck if you are going ahead with this purchase.

    • Do they solder the drive to the board?

so you can't take them out to use in another device like ps3

      • I was talking about WD drives in general. Though previous comments have suggested that you cannot remove the internal drive.

        • yeah

          that's why I prefer seagate..

          Really easy to remove.

  • I have owned so many WD drives and generally I have no issues with them. Probably you are just out of luck I guess?

  • Is this up yet?

  • Bought one this will be like the 3rd HDD I buy via posts on here….

  • Bought one at officeworks, price beat too. Seems like there are heaps and even stashed in a bin!
