That hard drive turns an otherwise reasonable machine into a slug.

Yeah not even a 7200 RPM one either. SSD partitions should be standard on these laptops by now.

Mechanical HDDs on factory laptops are ALWAYS better. The markup manufacturers slap on is ridiculous. 256gb ssd version of this is $1749. Considering a 1tb ssd is around $400… you do the math.

I say cut the bs markup on ssd's and always leave mechanicals as an option.

    • It's a hybrid drive, small ssd with large hdd.

  • And the screen flexes like crazy

  • Whats the difference between the 7000 series and the 5000 series? Spec-wise it looks awfully similar to this from last year:

Obviously with slightly upgraded chips since it's a year old.

  • Only a sucker would spend >$1K on a machine without an SSD

    • $1749 with Ssd 250 gb

    • only computer illiterates don't know how much you save adding and cloning your own

  • I like the look of the new Asus ones better, shame the CPU on those ones are Core M…
This one has good specs and good price, shame about the hard drive…

  • You may get a further discount using their online chat reps. I was able to get a %17 discount on Alienware 15 by saying MSI is cheaper, but that was on regular price not already discounted price. Also, dont forget your cashback :)

I bought it to run multiple VM's because it has 16GB memory and I replaced original harddisk with an SSD - then your Dell recovery image wont restore into it because Source (1TB) is bigger.
Hardware issue so far - trackpad is crappy. Return was paid by Dell through Aus-post. Even after repair, it doesn't work like >$1k laptop :(
    So buy it, regret it.

    • I have random track pad issues with my dell too. For me anyway is that it can act up when it gets a little dirty. The other cause looks like a crappy synaptics driver issue. Pointer would stop responding to swipes and multi finger gestures when left on you long and you need to hibernated the laptop and turn it back on again to fix it.

      • My right click on track almost got stuck at its lower position. So I had to fix it anyway during warranty period.
I did read those reviews about random click issues even before I bought it, but I was distracted by that 16GB memory. So just putting up a warning sign.

    • I replaced original harddisk with an SSD - then your Dell recovery image wont restore into it because Source (1TB) is bigger.

Lame. Bad enough they couldn't fit an mSATA/M.2 slot in this laptop; least they could do is not make sure there are no hiccups swapping the HDD for an SSD.

      • Or make your own (image) backup for future restorations?
