    Nice price! Strongly considering :)

i heard there are issues with the touch pad, has that been fixed up?

    • from what I understand it's a hardware not a software issue. I really like the look of these but would want to see/try one in person first. No JB etc stores seem to stock this particular model which makes it a little difficult.

I’ve got the 8GB one in front of me now. I was concerned the key stroke may be too shallow but it’s fine. As for the touch pad, compared to my MacBook, it’s crap, but then from what I understand Apple do have the best track pads by a decent amount. There is a BIOS update and firmware update to improve the trackpad performance, and the difference from when I turned it on, to after updating those is night and day. It is still not that accurate, nor would I call it smooth. I can’t find a way to increase the speed or sensitivity, these settings are handled by Microsoft, not a 3rd party as per most.
Have a read on the Whirlpool forums for more local feedback.

I'm tempted. I was actually looking at this a few days ago contemplating it. My hesitation is that I do a lot of video work and the 4gb ram might seriously bottleneck rendering.

    Macbook or this… hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

    • +2

this xps looks much better imo.
bigger screen but a similar size to the 12inch apple.(about the size of the 11inch Air)
seems a better video 5500 to 5300, whatever that means in real life though.
      better battery life.

      Its also $600 cheaper.

So get the 8GB version, or the i7, there are 3 versions on their store - http://stores.ebay.com.au/Official-Dell-Australia-Store/_i.h…

    • … or hold out a little longer for Skylake version, with h.265 hardware-assisted encoding/decoding… Better long-term ROI, IMO.

      • AWwwwwwhhh way to throw another spanner in the works. That chip looks nice!

        • I wonder though… if an XPS 13 6th edition is on the way then buying the 5th on 6 month price drop protection might drop the price even more.

        • Price reduction doesn't compensate for lack of feature…

You wrote … I do a lot of video work… and h.265 is video.

        • @AlexF:

I almost strictly process in h.265 now anyway, just not hardware assisted. You can process it even on the worst laptops, its just a matter of processing power. My fear is that I'll wait until the end of this year for a performance perk when I'll gain a lot of upgrade buying something soon.

    • Macbook or this…

Hmm, make sure the MacBook's thermal throttling won't affect your rendering speeds.

I suppose you could watercool the MacBook if you needed full performance. :)

Please let me know if I am wrong. I bought the Toshiba Kira Ultrabook, 5th Gen i7, 8 GB, 256 SSD, 13.3 inch FHD screen, at JB HI FI when they had 15% off sale for computers and laptop. Bought it for $1280.00 and claimed the TRS as I was going overseas. It is very light and portable. Might be worth looking in to this option if anyone else is keen.

EDIT: Can't find the KIRA product on JB website now but probably worth checking in the stores.

    • Sounds like you got a bargain. I think the extra cost in the XPS goes into the display and the machining of the case/carbon fibre.

    • +2

Agree with you, I also prefer the Kirabook over the XPS. I did a more in-depth comparison here.

is 4gb enough?? Or is it worth paying 400$ for extra 4gb ram? Cant decide between the two.

    • +1

That's a very expensive price for 4GB of RAM. $100 per GB. Not worth it imo.

  • Got this first thing this morning. Was considering the S7 393 which dropped about $400 at JB but thought I'd save the extra money and put it towards a monitor or something. Remember you get 2 Qantas or Velocity points per dollar spent using their online malls, although the 2% cash back is probably better value for most.

  • And now I just have to wait and hope a Dell 30% off sale coincides with an ebay 20% off weekend. I want the i7 version which is still $2000 after $300 off.

does anyone know if i could claim TRS even this XPS shipped from Malaysia?

    • It is being sold by an Aus business, so yes it has GST. Don't be surprised if it actually ships from Homebush.

      • Isn't Kogan an Australian business despite their products shipping from HK? No GST paid though.

        • They have two, one in Aus, and one in Hong Kong.

    • Yes, you can claim. Regardless of whether it is shipped from Malaysia. It's over $1000, so GST will be charged.

  • Wouldn't it be cash back of 2% off the $1199.20 not the original $1499, making it $1175.22?

    • The cash back is of the EX gst price.

This seems like a good deal. Is there a reason it is not getting more votes? Can anyone recommend a better ultrabook at this price point?

    • +1

I hesitated at the 15% off Dell deal a while ago. Glad I did. Bought this last night. Excellent price. I can't imagine it going much lower than this. This is an excellent laptop with a fantastic IPS screen - highly recommended. Other high end ultrabooks have other advantages: MacBook Air has OS and a nice touchpad but poor screen. The Lenovo is overpriced with a poor screen but great keyboard. The XPS has a great screen, fine keyboard, ok touchpad (with firmware). It's the design that kills all the others. It's a 13" ultrabook in an 11" form. Winner.

      • I waited too long fence-sitting - all gone now. The only one left is the i5 with 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM at $1,899, which comes down by the max $300 to $1,599 not making it such a great deal in my view.

        • Cr*p… me too.

    • +1

This is a great deal, but it is only slightly cheaper than the Dell 15% off sale.

I was shattered that I couldn't get this HP Spectre, I think it went sold out at the very start of the eBay sale.

  • It's now saying 8gb ram and 256gb ssd in the title but only 4gb and 128gb ssd in the description. Certainly is a deal if they go by the title specs. What's the precedent here as far as Dell having to honour this?

  • oh yes…. now its showing 8gb ram and 256g HDD for 1499. Bought it. Could it be a mistake by Dell??

    • it actually shows 4gb / 128gb in 'item specifics' table…

  • +1

Received the Dell order acknowledgement and it's only 4gb ram and 256gb ssd.

    • I'll be waiting for it to arrive before opening a dispute as they may cancel the order entirely.

      • what happens when you open a dispute?

        • I'm thinking they'd have to honour the original sale and send the 8gb version.

        • Wouldnt that mean another two or so weeks wait? I bought the lower speced one as well so not sure which one to cancel now lol. Might cancel the lower speced one tomorrow and contact them regarding the misleading title tomorrow, with the hope of getting it upgraded.

    • +1

Yeah, I purchased the 8/256gb model off the listing title and wound up with the 4/128gb - Dell actually called me and apologised for the mistake and offered me a backpack for my troubles. Definitely gonna need the beefier model but not sure whether to cancel the existing order entirely and wait for it to come down in price or to just front up the extra cash and get the model I need.

      • Received a call from Dell today too. I have to call him tomorrow. What is everyone else doing? Thinking I'll just have to take the bag if they offer it and accept it.

  • They fixed the error. Shouldve pulled the trigger earlier :( good luck to those who did!

  • Ended up picking one up last night after all.

Anyone know what dock I can get for this? I also have a 12" Dell Latitude for work, so would like to be able to dock both at the home office.

  • Another question, can anyone confirm how much available space the 128GB SSD actually comes with? And is it upgradable to say a 512GB SDD?

    • According to a Whirlpool, it uses the new M.2 SATA SSD drive, which means that it's not as easily upgradable as a regular MSATA drive.

The RAM is not upgradable at all as it's soldered into the motherboard (not uncommon in an ultrabook).

Just a slight clarification… it's just as easy to do the replacement as MSATA (unscrew, drive pops out), it's just not as easy to find larger M.2 drives at the moment. MSATA drives were difficult to find at one stage too though.

        • This Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD M.2 is currently on special for $269 delivered from ShoppingExpress.

        • @elektron: Yes they certainly exist, they're just not as widespread as mSATA.

        • @eug: sure, just thought I'd share the link in case anyone is interested as it seems like a decent price for a good drive. This may void your warranty though.
