Huawei Y635 4G 5 Inch Optus Prepaid Android Smartphone for $99 @ Coles+ $36 Netflix Credit

80

This is a relatively new arrival to Australia and this is the cheapest price you can buy it for (Optus sell it for $139).

Here are the main specs:

  • supported frequencies - 2G: 850/900/1800/1900; 3G: 900/2100/1900; 4G: 700/1800/2100/2600.
  • OS: Android 4.4 (KitKat).
  • Quad-core 1.2 GHz Qualcomm MSM8916 CPU
  • Internal memory of 8 GB (with 3.7GB available to use. The rest is taken by the operating system) which is expandable up to 32GB using a microSD card
  • 5 inch FWVGA IPS display with 480 x 854 pixels resolution (same resolution as the Y550)
  • Back (main) camera – 5MP. Front camera – 2MP
  • 2000mAh battery.
  • weight – 178 grams.

Like all the other Optus prepaid devices, It comes with $36 of Netflix credit provided you activate the included SIM by July 5 and apply the voucher your get from Optus to your Netflix account (either new or existing) by the end of September.

The 'catch' is that stock is EXTREMELY limited. The team and myself checked with our insider sources and have been told that each Coles store can order up to 3 units per batch and can't order more until all three are sold.

This means that your local Coles will have up to 3 in stock at any one time but will likely have less than that or even none.

Quick check I did in my local area (Gold Coast) revealed that right now, no Coles has more than 2 units in stock and quite a few (e.g. Pacific Fair, Surfers Paradise) have none so you will need to go on the 'hunt'.

This phone is one of the models we included in our detailed overview of the cheapest 4G-capable smartphones you can currently buy in Australia. There are 3 other options there to consider if you can't get your hands on a Y635 Unit.

You can also find there a video review by cNet and how to get this phone unlocked for $2.40 (through OzBargain darling Bagman).

I hope you manage to score yourself one but I suggest you ring around first and maybe ask them to reserve a unit for you (even though not all Coles stores will agree to do it based on my personal experience).

cant see why its twice the price of a y550… it aint twice the phone

if it has a HD Screen…

    • You can't get the Y550 for less than $99 anymore as well to the best of my knowledge (but happy to be corrected).

The Y635 also has a 5 inch screen whereas the Y550 has a 4.5 inch screen.

Give it time and this probably drop to half this price too.

When I saw the new model number I thought it must have something upgraded.

Same only bigger screen not even 720p screen.

    TLDR:

    pros -
    oz stock

    cons -
    1gb ram
    Resolution 480 x 854 pixels

    • Yeah, nah. we'll stick with our Y550's.
Same res on a larger screen - Y550 already has a sub-standard pixel density, will make it look bad.
Also larger screen will no doubt mean higher battery load + shorter battery life. We like that we can get 2+ days out of our Y550's.
Lollipop in the UK and we get shafted with KK, doubt there will be an update as Huawei/ZTE etc. are notorious for not giving updates to newer versions.
IF it was $49 AND we needed more screen real estate THEN it may be a viable option.

  • is it just me or Huawei phones are either cheap and low specced or expensive and high specced (over 400 is expensive for me) these days? doesnt seem to be any middle ground phones for a good price…

    • There are middle ground options, however none of them sell particularly well here and people usually either gravitate to last years flagships or go for a budget prepaid SIM bundle option.

The Ascend P7 though is apparently marketed as mid-end despite the initial $400 price tag.

  • look at the 3G, 4G frequency, can it use for Telstra and Vodafone after unlook ?

    • No 3G 850MHz
