$0 iOS: Air Video HD (Video Streaming App) Was $3.79

1440

When we started working on Air Video HD we had one simple objective in mind: To build the best video streaming app technically possible. With the 2.0 release, we know we came to this closer than ever.

If you have your videos on your computer and want to enjoy them on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV, this is the app for you.

Download and install the server software on your Mac or PC (Linux coming soon) and you’ll be watching your videos on your device in seconds. Going somewhere without network access? Download is just one tap away.

Don’t worry about video formats, codecs and bitrates, let Air Video HD handle the dirty details for you. If needed, Air Video HD will transparently transcode the video (“on fly”) so that it plays on all supported iOS devices, including Apple TV (with surround sound and soft subtitles). But we took special care to ensure that transcoding is only done when necessary. No matter what format the video is in, AVI, DivX, MKV and other videos just work.

YES!1 I can finally stop using the now-discontinued Classic Air Video with iOS 6 UI.

  • Wasn't this posted earlier today ??? or am I hallucinating…

    • +3

      no you're just crazy

    • +1

Yes. The op requested it be removed. It says Deal unattainable.

    • +2

      Wasn't this posted earlier today?

Yes it was, and I had it removed as no-one was able to actually download it. All fixed now.

  • Can it download videos from utub?

    • Not a video downloader - it streams videos from your computer, like Plex.

      • -4

it streams videos from your computer

Even when your computer is switched off? That's amazing…

        • -1

No it streams them from the clouds

        • Actually the 'new' version (being HD, vs.. non-HD naming - sigh) has a 'download' button in the app, so you can 'easily' transfer videos across to your Apple device.

    • what's utub ?

      • +8

        It's where youtube bathes :)

        • +2

So it only has the clean videos ?

        • @jv:
You can download the dirty ones but you need permission from the government.

        • @jv: only until you don't login. After that all bets are off.

      • Is it similar to tub girl?

I bought this two days ago :( oh well. Good app

    • I bought the non-HD version shortly before they decided to 'rename' the app and create a new app.. so I'm happy with this deal. Just have your friends install it on their devices for when they are over next and want to stream your 'collection'.

I use it on the rare occasion Plex doesn't want to work for me. Also with Nexus Player/FireTV I now have Kodi available.

    • TA! Thanks for your purchase.

    • Same here :(

  • +2

this is by far my favourite app on iOS. no other streaming apps comes close to what this apps delivers.

  • +3

Hmmm. You have to use their streaming server software. I already have two DLNA servers (Kodi and Serviio) it cant connect to either. I'll stick with AirPlayer.

    • VLC can also connect to DLNA servers

      • Yep so can my Smart TV. Not having support for DLNA is a deal breaker for me.

    • Do you know of any dlna client that supports ac3?

      • Infuse for iOS. Though I've not tried it.

        • @tomlut

Do you have a preference, Kodi or Serviio?

        • @CheapRichGuy:

I prefer Kodi as it has great library management but Serviio works better with my TV. Stupid telly has some sort of thumbnail size limit and Serviio resizes them appropriately.

  • wtf, just got it 2 weeks ago at full price!!!

    • The developer is grateful for your support, no doubt.

  • Will this stream to chrome cast?

    • +1

This won't it's the client app for ios phones. As for their windows or mac streaming server software… I don't think so. It supports Apple's AirPlay but there's no mention of Chromecast on thier website.

    • +1

They do in "early access" which requires you to purchase in app.

  • Is this better than vlc streamer?

    • Yes

  • It's also great for converting files and storing them on your device. very handy for watching movies on planes and cars.

  • +5

It appears that this is now freeware with the premium features available as in-app purchases…

    Not really a freebie then…

    • Still need to check but based on what they sell in "early access", majority of ppl will just enjoy free app.

  • Very cool!
Just wondering, say you had a 1GB file that you are streaming from your computer to your tablet. Does your computer use 1GB of bandwidth to stream + your tablet uses 1GB to stream so that the total bandwidth used is 2GB?

    • +1

      You're high right now right?

      • Nope, just wondering whether its that simple or uses a lot less/more data to stream depending on quality or things like that.

    • If I give you $10 and you receive that $10, does that mean a total of $20 was given?

… There is 1gb total being transferred in your network. :p

      • If I give you $10 and you receive that $10, does that mean a total of $20 was given?

        i know that dude.

I said I was wondering if it was simple like that. Maybe there is data loss while streaming that would increase the bandwidth used or perhaps quality is downscaled to reduce the data usage. Or if it was a straight transfer like I said in the original question.

Actually a 1GB WOULDNT equate to 1GB of transmitted data. There's actually a fair bit of overhead if you're using TCP. (control data, sequencing, ports etc)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmission_Control_Protocol#TCP_segment_structure
A little bit of searching showed it was 90% efficiency

          UDP is however more efficient
http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?t=363492 but its still definitely not a perfect 1:1 ratio

In short a 1GB file would consist of more data

To fair though to the others the 2GB example isn't exactly the correct logic either :)

        • @whatthecrappin: cool, that was pretty much the sort of answer I was looking for. So would the 1GB file consist of more data for both the tablet to stream and PC to upload?

    • Droping quality = less data usage.

Bandwidth wise = whatever you are capable of..

    • Is someone charge you for using internal network data?

  • can someone elaborate on what the in app purchase of 'join early access' actually is?

    • +2

To keep Air Video HD sustainable, we’re introducing Early Access. Certain new features will initially be available in preview mode, with single in-app purchase to Join Early Access and remove preview mode restrictions.

      Features currently in Early Access:
      * Instant Scrubbing Preview: Seeking doesn't have to be a mystery. You'll know where you land before even releasing the slider.
      * Chromecast Support - Seamless integration with soft subtitles and surround sound.

        Thanks for that TA.

  • I have been using 'Beamer' for a while (which I paid for) and find it does what it says…how does Air Video HD compare??

  • This is one of the best iOS streaming app

I purchased it for quite a while and still using it nearly everyday

The only drawback might be some performance issue with .avi or .wmv files
Seems the original AirVideo app (not the HD) load faster with these formats

  • Well it's not looking free to me! Click throughs from here, and using the App Store both show this as being $3.79.
