Can anyone confirm if Chromecast can stream 1080p from another device decently?
No issues myself but this would be more dependent on your own wireless network/router/CPU than anything else. It also only supports 2.4ghz wireless.
Can you use Chromecast to mirror my laptops screen, without a wifi network?
Or, I have a 3G wifi hotspot the MacBook and Chromecast can connect to, but it doesn't have much data. Will it be a problem if I'm just mirroring the screen?
Chromecast requires WiFi as the middle man. The point is to cast from a device to your TV and to give your basic TV some sort of smart TV capability.
I use a Vodaphone Wi-fi 3G modem without the sim to create a network to mirror/cast to my TV from my phone or iPad. It doesn't need a sim to create the network so you're not wasting/using your data if you just mirror.
I just pop one of many starter sims in there if I want to use smart features but it's just as easy once mirroring to use data from phone for YouTube etc.Serious?! I never read that, in ALL my searching :(
The WiFi aspect is the ONLY thing that's held me back every time.

If you want a new toy, get the Pi. Its so much more flexible. Great for experimenting, as to change the firmware, you just swap the sd card.Next Pi deal i'm jumping on it!
