These look the same as ones you can get from Bunnings for about $15, so $9.99 is a good price, but not a 65% saving.

I've got about 10 sets in the garage and they are a pain in the proverbial to assemble with lots of little screws. Once they're assembled, they work well, especially if you can attach them to a wall for added stability.

    • +2

Definitely need to secure to a wall or similar. Mine have a great habit of twisting forward as they can't be secured in their current location. I cable tied them to each other and that seems to do the job.

      • +1

I just used the spare nuts and bolts to join them together in a row.

How long is the sale on for? I got some black powder coated ones from mitre 10 (clerance) for $25ea and wouldn't mind some galv ones for the laundry. Great deal.

    • from the link to catalougue, the sale goes form 1/07 to 14/07

    Dimensions: 710 x 300 x 1370mm = ABSOLUTELY TINY

Absolutely awful product, and the "65% saving" quoted is total and utter BS.

However this previous deal for Bunnings at same size and price was pretty popular: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/175234

    • Guys this is correct. These are regularly $9.95 at Bunnings. I bought a couple of them and after assembling the first one ended up I throwing the others out.

If you want a wobbly flimsy piece of folded razor thin sheet metal go ahead. Price isn't everything. $39 might be 4X the price but you get something significantly more sturdy and usable.

      • Currently $15.98 at Bunnings. I'm waiting for them to drop to $9.90 again. Hopefully very soon, I need more!

did you tighten the nuts and bolts by a hand screwdriver? I used my makita cordless, got each assembled in around 15 minutes each and they are very, very sturdy. Never received a cut either.

      • All true. Using a automatic screw driver does gives a tighter, firmer structure.
I use bits of timber or tiles to tilt the front legs backwards, causing the structure to push against the wall.
Join two units or more together to get a more useful height or width.
They are good for lighter, pantry style items, but are not really heavy garage items.
Even a cheap bookcase if you make strips to create sides on each self.

These things are generally a bit clunky to handle/assembly. But value is 2nd to none, and perfect simple shelfing, once assembled. Paint cans, shoes, office supplies… all sorts. Just keep in-mind 50KG can add-up quickly!

Going by specs, could be same as…

    Others sell similar, claiming 60KG.

yep, they're annoying to assemble. My tip is to build it on it's side, hand tighten only. Then turn upside down, get someone to hold it square, and then tighten from the ground up with pliers and a screwdriver

      • Completely agree.

  • This must be excluding WA. When i click the link it doesn't show the deal.

Anyway, these things are always cheap, and will cut your hands

    • I put together about 8 sets after the last time they had this deal and didn't cut myself once, even after I stopped being careful. Either I'm lucky or they've fixed that issue.

  • are the actual shelves steel also? Thinking of using this outdoors.

    • +1

yes, shelves and support structure of same material

  • So how much does the packaging weigh and could it be put in a corolla?

    • +1

      Not much and yes.

    • It comes flat packed, 71cm long, 30cm wide, and less than 10cm thick. Weighs a few kilos, light enough that i can pick it up with 2 hands no issues, 1 hand would be pushing it.

  • I bought the bunnings ones when they were on sale. They seem exactly as these ones. You can even put two of them together for a taller storage option which is what I did at my parents garage. If you do this I definitely recommend you anchor the back to wall at and you do not go with 50kg on every shelf. Keep heavier stuff toward bottom.

  • Is this better than Ikea Hyllis $12.99?

The Ikea AU doesn't have producct info, but the US store does:
    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00278578/

    • Actually, from the US description, the SCA is better, it can take more load/shelf

      • That is a heaps better unit. less assemble time too, and they are $13 from AU IKEA?

  • OP the deal is not available in WA. Please update in description.

  • thanks OP
Very handy for the garage and shed. I'll take 2.

Building them is an absolute pain! Advice is to get some gloves and do it while watching TV or something, otherwise it's 45 minutes of your life you're never getting back.

    • +1

"Advice is to get some gloves and do it while watching TV or something, otherwise it's 45 minutes of your life you're never getting back."

As opposed to just watching TV? ;)

      • +2

TV can be great and informative, you can brush up on some latin or learn about the solar system, I'm sure it will come to practical use some day. However on the contrary I'm not sure how applicable flat pack shelf building is.

    • +1

best advice is not to watch tv however concentrate on doing it right, get a decent cordless driver, a flat surface, perhaps some gloves if you have gentle hands and you will find it takes around 15 minutes max. First step is to gently tighten the nuts and bolts. Then stand it upright and adjust to get it vertical. Then tighten all nuts/bolts with a cordless.

    • The more difficult to build, the better the fun (and satisfaction at the end) :D

      • could apply that to legos or a puzzle, unsure about flat pack shelfing lol

  • I went to SCA not realizing that the catalog price starts tomorrow…
    So be advised…

    • Can't you just buy with club membership now, and claim a voucher for the difference tomorrow?

I've only recently joined the club, so I haven't had a chance to try this yet. Does it work, and how long do I have to spend the voucher before it expires?

      • Probably but I live close to a SCA shop so I will go again tomorrow.

      • +1

around 30 days I believe and you have to "buy" something, so arguably you're better off with cash in your pocket.

        • No argument, you are definitely better off with cash in your pocket.

        • @BartholemewH:

Well you may want/intend to purchase something at a later date anyway and can use the voucher.

        • +1

          @fillit:
I had $400 in vouchers for Robins Kitchen when they went insolvent. I'm not saying it will happen here but 'cash equivalents' issued by businesses are nothing like cash.
