Sponges are really not the most ideal thing to use on a car, they can get dirty and scratch, they tend to not wipe away grime as well as a cloth, and each time you pull them out of the bucket they take a lot of water out.

I usually use a microfibre cloth or terry toweling - clean and fresh

Woolen wash mitts are also good.
