Microsoft Zune 30GB $99 + 9.95 Shipping (Refurb-12 Months Warranty)

230

Basically an update of http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/19518
Presumably they couldn't sell many at $149 - It's now down to $99 (til Tuesday 15th)
There's some debate about it's worth as a player…but $110 for a 30g player seems good value to me…..:)

  • Ah the unit all the Experts in the media declared would be the end of Apple just slowly sinks into the bargain basement bin. At $100 is it really worth it, when 32gb SDHC memory sticks have more functionality at a lower price ($98 at MSY)

    • +2

experts declared it would kill the ipod? Which experts were those? Real experts would never make such bold claims…

the Zune HD on the other hand, beats the ipod touch in terms of media player functionality. Hands-down. But now that apple's marketing has brainwashed everyone, it'll take a long time before anyone overtakes the ipod.

btw that 30GB is hdd-based. Thought it was worth mentioning.

    • Noone realistic ever believed the Zune was going to kill the iPod, not in a million years. It still did fairly well in the states if you can overlook the fact it didn't do much to dent Apples own sales.

  • so people would recommend this? deals extreme have for the same price but dont really trust them.

  • I see you get a $10 gift voucher if you spend over $50 on there today. So not a bad deal then

    • even betterer….

  • You can get a new not refurbished one at DX (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.28784) around $98AUS inc delevery.

    • Except the dealextreme zune doesn't have the 12 months warranty, is available in a huge range of brown and was first listed in August and as yet I haven't seen any reports of anyone even receiving one yet :(

  • if I didnt have a 32Gb iphone I would grab this.

  • I strongly recommend the Zune 30. Until I dropped mine in the bath (not a good idea) it was a great little performer. And a steal at that price.

  • It's a shame that the Wifi on the Zune can only be used for squirting (ahem, transferring) music from device to device, and not for surfing the web (only the Zune HD, the successor of the original Zune has a web browser).

    • Yeah i have the ZUNE HD 16GB and it is pretty good… the video & music quality

  • im gonna get one now :)

  • What do they mean by refurbished? Like the previous ownered returned it because it had issues and now it's been fixed and given the ok? Does this mean I can probably expect small scratches/imperfections etc on it?

  • +1

refurbished generally looks and feels brand new…the outside is new the guts are used but certified ok.

    • thanks, my only other concern would be the battery but I guess it comes down to your luck on that one.

  • I have an original Zune 30 hand me down upgraded to the latest firmware, and im less than impressed, dreadful software, makes it a real PITA to transcode xvids (hopefully todays giveawayoftheday.com product will help with that).

Of course i still prefer it to an iPod. Even though the zune for all intents and purposes is almost crap.

    • Are you disappointed with the Zune, or that you have to transcode your xvids to play them on the Zune?

      • Mainly disappointed with the difficulty of getting videos onto the zune, it should be simple, but you have to use a bloated POS app which doesn't support a wide range of formats. Even iTunes is better than the zune software.

The Zune itself isnt too bad of a device. If they had it support MSC (use as a USB hdd) and easy transfer of files and multi format support it would be much better, but as it is its barely better than my 6 year old RIO Karma (which only plays audio, and doesn't act as an MSC either)

        • Hrm, I had similar frustrations getting videos onto any player. My iPod was quite fussy with codecs, just like my phone.

The Zune HD on the other hand, has been a breeze so far! Microsoft's free Expression Encoder has a Zune preset that just .. works! Even with Media Centre's .wtv and .dvr-ms video files, which is always a problem for other conversion programs.

While I was looking for a compression prog for the zune HD, I came across a number that had Zune presets. The free conversion programs listed here on OZB had a zune preset (WinX and the other one).

I just had a look at Expression Encoder 3 and it does have a Zune 1 and Zune 2 preset - maybe you should give it a try.

  • I had a 30Gb Zune and the HDD died in it, I never got around to repairing it because the cost of the new HDD made it not worth the expense…ironically, these refurb 30gb units are cheaper than a replacement 30Gb HDD. It may be worth noting that Zune uses the same Toshiba 30Gb HDD as iPods so if you have a 30Gb iPod with a dead HDD this may be a cheap way to replace your iPod's hard drive….oh the irony!

  • So these are second-hand US devices right? Wonder what the support will be here given MS never bothered releasing them in Aust…
