How Often Do You Exercise Per Week OzBargain Community?

I am just curious as how often the Ozbargain Community exercises per week. I have played sport from a young age usually soccer and cricket each season where it involves 1-2 trainings per week and the game on the weekend. I have some friends that are personal trainers and one said to me the other day, " The best investment you can make is your health".

This quote got me thinking particularly about the Ozbargain community where you see mainly fast food deals ( pizza, delivery hero etc). This is my personal experience, but I am often willing to spend more money on food that I believe will be better for me. I just talk myself into saying, "well it is healthy for me…" Every time. For example, I love almond nuts, in particularly the dry roasted however they are extremely expensive, or a good piece of salmon.
I am genuinely interested in what you guys think.

Bonus questions:
1) Do you see buying/eating healthy an expensive task or as my friend says an investment in your health?
2) Are you more willing to buy items of higher value if they are an healthier option.

It makes we want to work out to justify eating more…well almost.

  • If sex count than it's 7 days, otherwise 0.

I plugged this into Google translate

my $11 a week gym membership has served me well. Thank you Genesis fitness for the heaps awesome deal. I love doing my Bodyattack, Bodypump, and RPM cycle classes yet try and do weights a few times a week. I do the odd City to surf and other running event each year but admit that my diet lets me down at times because LOVE my burgers and my schnitzels. Nevertheless I understand the importance of healthy eating.

2 games of Futsal a week @ 1 hour each, 1 day with outdoor Soccer a week @ 2 hours, and sometimes a game of Netball directly after one of those Futsal games a week @ 1 hour.

Nice to see another Futsal player on here :), I play 3-4 games every Sunday aft/evening and an outdoor match on a Saturday plus training mid week also run a few kms after work just to keep the legs from seizing up. I know many more who do more exercise than me but its so time consuming.

      • The ACT seems to be where the majority of social Futsal action takes place so if you live outside of the ACT then you're the first one i've heard to play it in another state. I used to run a game as well but had to cancel it due to lack of numbers.

Can never have enough Soccer/Futsal players :D

Everyday… I spend about 12-13 hours (moving time) a week cycling (including commuting). I guess I'm one of those addictive to cycling… More like addicted to endorphins lol. Seriously though I find a lot of joy riding my bike. I've tried Every. Single. Sport. under the sun and I wasn't good at any of them, until I found cycling when I rode to and from uni. Any sport that involves a ball — I can't hit or kick a ball straight let alone catch one. Hahaha.

I think there will be some sort of exercise/sport that will suit everyone. Just keep trying out new sports. I absolutely hate running but I do like a 5 km run every now and then. Meeting the right friends helps as well. It keeps you healthy and lessen the duration and severity of cold/flu in winter. There's a million reasons why you should exercise so just do it.

And with regards to spending on healthy foods — you don't need to spend a lot on healthy food actually. I keep a balanced diet (no fancy paleo vegan hi carb low carb whatever)… I have a little bit of meat with lots of fruit and veg and some carbs. I don't choose organic, just the normal stuff. I go through Coles/WW catalogues each week online to find out which fruit/veg is on special, so I don't need to pay lots to eat healthily.

  • Sat and Sun, for around half and hour, jogg. walk till tired, do some pull ups in the playground go home.

Did the gym thing, and got better results but this is cheaper and easier,

Also the odd ten min session at the work gym, more upkeep.

Some ohp, body squats, romanin deadlifts, and pulling just with a barbell,

Man surprised me most about humanity. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.
Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.

On a mission to lose body fat at the moment, and going to 5-7 one hour long classes per week, I love Body Combat the best and also chucking in some Body Pump and Zumba. Planning to pick up some cycle classes now that I'm feeling fit enough too. Also running after 6 kids helps! We're going on a 14k walk/run for charity in a couple of weeks so trying to get more active lots of ways.

Just finished the Whole Life Challenge, eating unprocessed foods has helped so much in losing weight plus I don't feel bloated anymore after meals. I have found it actually cheaper than buying pre-packaged pre-prepared foods. I'm continuing to eat this way now even though it's finished.

It's definitely an investment in my health and in particular mentally - I am in a much better place with regular exercise. Hubby is happy for me to go out several evenings a week while he's on kiddy duty because he knows I am a much nicer, patient person this way.

I will spend decent money on healthy, quality produce but I think overall it balances out when you cut out the crap foods, so I don't feel like it's more expensive really.

Also my Fitbit HR has been a great motivator, need to crack 30k steps in a day next :)

    • i was doing similar work outs to you but i find kayla itsines guide really good. i didn't really tone or lose weight doing gym classes. kayla's structured program just works. check our #bbgmums on instagram. i noticed my legs slimmed down just after 3 weeks. and now my abs are toned and defined. i feel stronger. i have fitbit too but rather than look at your step count, check which level you are in the fat burn zone. 20k leisure walk in a day burns less than 1hr power walk.

I perform substantial exercise at least 6 days per week unless I'm sick or injured.

I started bodybuilding at home and built up a home gym which I soon grew out of: There's a limit to how many weight plates, barbells, dumbbells and pieces of gym equipment one can fit into their living room before it ceases to be a living room.

I lift weights for 2–3 hours 4 times per week if I'm lucky. I need my strength for competitive weekly sailing where I'm primary jib trimmer, pitman, foredecky and what ever else someone isn't doing quickly enough. I also do an hour of yoga twice per week and a lot of running and walking everywhere.

I used to cycle a LOT. But I've largely replaced that with the Monday Running Club and a Weekly Rewarded Opal card.

I eat pretty much what ever I want including vast quantities of icecream, chocolate, cake, deep-fried savouries and fast-food/take-aways.

Well clearly the honour system is keeping this poll extremely honest.

Out of 263 respondents (as of now), an amazing 48% are exercising at least 4 times a week or more. A further 21% exercise at least 2 times a week. For comparison, the highest self-reported rates of exercise in global polls are around 2.5 days per week.

And yet somehow 63% of Australians are obese. Including 37% of young adults aged 18-24 (an old statistic; probably 40-something now).

    Right.

So either we're the most energetic fat asses on the planet who manage to find plenty of time to hit the gym inbetween scoffing Big Macs and being hypnotised by reality TV or OzBargain members just happen to be a eugenicist's dream, disproportionately comprised of ideal, atypical specimens that represent a small percentage of the larger population.

        DING DING DING DING DING.
I know people who go for a 20mins "jog" aka slightly faster than walking and think they burned 600 calories and need a protein shake and carb heavy dinner.
        No. Just no.

Ahahaha I know a few of those people. I'm one of the rare few who outran their fork though, 2 hours in the gym and 1 hour on the fx mat, almost everyday with rarely a rest day. I don't recommend it though, I got sick easily and wore out my kneecaps.

          @Bunnyburger:

:( Sounds like my running and feet.

Now I am such a careful consumer. I'm very skinny but I love it.
The 'naturally skinny' thing is questionable for me. If you actually monitor thin people they don't eat as much as many think. Their skill is just not thinking about food.
ALL my skinny friends only eat around 1200-1400/day but it appears they eat more as they may have a juice for breakfast burger and chips for lunch and maybe one small chocolate for dinner. But people only see the burger and chips and a chocolate wrapper and think 'wow you eat so much' when in fact that was all they consumed - no snacks.

It's like my former skinny male roommate who would eat like 3 pizza slices a day but that was it. So yes he did eat pizza everyday but JUST pizza.

People often say I don't eat much because I actually eat 5 meals - B,S,L,S,D. If I skipped meals and snacks I could eat pizza everyday for dinner and not gain weight and 'fit in'. It's just preference in how people allocate their calories.

        • @Lemonade: Since I can't run anymore or lift because of my injuries so I switched to doing bodyweight exercises. Sadly I'm not so sure about my skinny friends, they tuck in quite a bit but they move a lot as well excluding their sporting activities.

I've actually found a great way to eat big and lose weight though, intermittent fasting is great. I hit my weight loss plateau a few days ago but it's actually going down now because of the fasting. I eat the same calories but I lose fat still! So anyway ya I'm a big believer in intermittent fasting and macronutrient cycling now.

        • @Bunnyburger:

:( for your injuries. Good for you for continuing exercise though.

I cycle and do some body weight exercises - Ballet Beautiful videos are good too.

IF sounds too complex for me. But if it works for you then yay!!!
          :)

  • 30min incidental walking 5days a week.
Martial arts 2x/week-lots of bodyweight fitness and padwork
Gym 2x/week - working on pull ups, bench, leg press overhead press, and HIIT the other time.

  • I don't exercise to lose weight, I exercise to keep my mind sharp!

There are many articles out there about the mental benefit of exercise in terms of endorphins and dopamine release to name a few, the feel good chemicals. Your mind becomes sharper, you are able to concentrate better and weight loss becomes a side effect to exercise you could say.

Morning exercise is my routine so I get the full benefit of the endorphins release for the work day. I go for high intensity, usually 11min run in 2.4km at 2 percent incline on treadmill.

Don't forget to do some stretching before & after exercise :)

  • Gym 3 times a week + running on rest days.
Going to the gym is awesome, relieves soo much stress and bulking means I can eat a ton of food without feeling bad :P

  • Depends on what you mean by exercise. If we're talking about reaching Target Heart Rates; i.e. 50-85% of maximum HR then I'd probably do 2-3 days per week. Mostly cardio such as jogging (which I'm hoping to change soon). If however, you mean exercise to be just walking somewhere beyond work/life commitments, I'd say at least 3-4 sometimes 4-5 times a week.

  • Ever since getting married, the motivation has dropped, try at least once a week.

  • I ride a bike to work 12km, most days, and hit the gym at least twice per week at lunch.

  • Goddam right I exercise:

60 minutes of cardio 5x per week
    Stronglifts 5x5 3x per week

I look fantastic, I can honestly say i look better than 10 years ago and people mistake my age a lot. Nice since I like younger women.

    1) Do you see buying/eating healthy an expensive task or as my friend says an investment in your health?

    No. But …

I eat Soylent (basically a bland, sweet tasting gloop that contains 100% RDI of everything incl. fats, fibre etc.) throughout the morning and afternoon finishing after I exercise. Leaves me feeling like I haven't exercised, for recovery it's amazing.

Then at night I eat like shit, baked goods, convenience food and icecream. Usually multiple serves of icecream.

If I didn't do that then it's more expensive if you want convenience, probably less expensive if your prepared to spend time cooking. I personally detest cooking.

    2) Are you more willing to buy items of higher value if they are an healthier option.

Not really. Food and health marketing is generally a crock of lies and idiocy. It's this way because the food retail and processing industries are HUGE and they spend a HUGE amount of money influencing government.

They have been successful enough to cause the gov of all Western nations barring one as far as I know to have an official policy of telling their citizens that they can eat as much as they want provided they exercise enough to "burn it off".

This is simply impossible for most people to achieve - it's like saying it's possible for every person to run a marathon: technically it's true but in reality it's just rubbish.

Big Food is happy because everyone is overeating and the "health wisdom" of the day is that it's the consumers fault if they gain weight because they aren't exercising enough.

    • I have my reservations about soylent but how did you get it over here? They only ship to USA and Canada, I checked a few days ago. You have the overpriced Aussielent. Then there's Joylent and Space Nutrition…

Oh and you've been watching Food Inc haven't you?

  • Using the Fitbit, and averaging around 115,000 steps a week (90kms of walking / jogging).. Other than yard work, that's about all the exercise I do.

    • Probably the most underestimated form of exercise ever.

  • PT three times a week which is expensive but not as expensive as you'd probably think - $80 for 3 half hour sessions and I like my trainer and enjoy it. That's mostly weights with the odd cardio session.

On top of that I usually go a minimum of once by myself to the gym and do bi's or tri's and some running because I'm training to do a 14km run soon. I do one or two protein shakes a day - usually one in the morning and one after working out.

  • +1

I work out 3 days a week. If sex counts then I still work out 3 days a week.

  • being healthy is more important than any bargain !!

  • Quite often. I walk to Dicksmiths store and Office works quite often, since I joined Ozbargain. With so many click and collect offers being listed.

  • work out 2 days a week and other days controlling via diet

  • Zero.

  • Almost every day. I do a combination of pilates, yoga, running, HIIT and weights, making sure I work out all the muscle groups by the end of the week.

One of my current mottos is "you can't put a price on health" :) there's no point being wealthier if you can't enjoy your wealth later on!

  • At least 4times a wk for 1 1/2 hours each session . I also do sport (oztag) and karate when I'm not broken though the week.
Im in much better shape then I was 2years ago, I was also very sick from my poor diet.

    I'm currently 32years old, 72kg at 5ft9.

  • Currently on a cut and uni holiday, Fasted steady state cardio in the AM, weight lifting in the PM. 6 days cardio and 5 days weight lifting. Since I'm a uni student, I keep my food and supps simple. Oats, eggs, canned tuna, chicken breast, brown rice, whey protein, creatine and intraworkout BCAAs. Simple yet effective.

  • i go to the gym 3x a week as much as possible or jig once a week and gym for 2x a week, Regulates my metabolism and i get hyper the whole day if i work out in the morning :)
