Gets a +1 from me just for the effort !

Good effort in compiling the list. Sorta makes you wonder if these are truly loss leaders or are they still making a substantial profit on top of these discounted price?

  • +1

I also noticed earlier today that there are more items reduced on surfstitch. Not sure when they were reduced but there are some Vans for pretty cheap if anyone is interested :).

    • Wow the ones I purchased went from stock in all sizes to no stock in any sizes, wonder if they actually all sold.

  • +1 for effort

    +1 for effort. .
$2 Sexy underwear panty from SS. Save 50%. lol.

  • +1 for effort!

    Upvote trawling, don't encourage it.

    • Seems that way, but as the OP said, they will update over time + its not an overly exhaustive list, so this has potential. I will hold off on giving the OP a + tho.

in that thread it seems he's whinging about users having to trawl through a few thousand items to find the bargains? this is a nice easy to read list with percentage drops in descending order.

Should i make the minimum percentage higher? only display the top 10 from each store?

        in this thread: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/201438
i state that i made this because i wanted to give something back, but i also don't want to be making these posts every night. as for the minimum percentage, or data displayed im still working on different formulas that people want to see. This post was meant to be just the 60% off the dealsdirect stuff, but it cant hurt to display a small feed of the few other shops i also track in there!

        • Don't listen to me, you're catering to the majority who will be wowed by a table and give it the big +1. That said I think the majority of people in the world aren't that smart and the numbers are growing thanks to safety laws etc.

The real value in a post is the research which goes into it. You're posting lists of things at % off relative to a stores own price. How does that translate to whats available elsewhere? What are the shipping arrangements for each of these stores? This is a basic grab of data which gives no confidence of value.

        • +3

          @bxpressiv:

Id rather go through this table to find a possible deal, than to trawl through many pages of slow websites.

When tightarse lists all the half price stuff at woolworths/coles, and when he recently compiled the kitchenwaredirect stuff, nobody lost their mind? Every half price item in woolworths was a 'bargain'?

        • +1

Don't get me started on that, but I don't think it's a fair comparison. The grocery stores are a duopoly and in the vast majority of cases just knowing a % off will give you a good feel for value. We know what we buy when we shop at grocery stores so we generally already know the prices.

Slapping together a list of %s off is low value data. 8Gb USB 2 was $32 now $15.98 + $8.95 shipping, you tell me, is that a bargain?

        • Also one suggestion I have for the system, is that many stores (looking at you, dick) like to do sales where they reduce prices many times a week. Is there a possible way for your program out to filter out the same repeated sales you've posted previously (unless the sale % is greater)(or unless the sale was really popular), so that many repeated sales on unpopular/unbargain products can be discarded?

This list looks great, definite +1 from me, keep up the good work. As rawn said, this has potential to be really awesome.

        • +4

          @lyl:

that's a great suggestion and definitely in the works, actually many things are but this is just a side project that i gotta juggle along side full time work + family.

basically what you see is just the outcome of a lot of data and a basic calculation. right now my main priority is to target more shops (have 20 or so) then make a nice website with custom filters, then item tracking (pretty graphs of the price of items over every day i have tracked them, then i will add a much nicer 'bargain' formula. i started this 3 days ago and so far i have made scrapers for 6 of these websites tracking about 100k items daily and it seems like it could be quite useful, so im stoked about that!

        • +1

it isn't just the % discount but whether the items end price is a bargain. As I mentioned below the few items I checked show they aren't a deal just because a store says XXX% off.

Maybe just the top ten and then you check if elsewhere is cheaper.
Or just post a couple of the real bargains, not a list of discounted prices.

        • @PVA:

it doesn't list the price just because the shop says its %off, but compares todays price with yesterdays, and eventually ill compare it to the last 2 weeks to improve bargain accuracy

        • +1

          @xEnt:
But that's what I am saying, it may be 50% off the price they did sell for but that doesn't mean it is still a bargain as elsewhere can be cheaper as I and others showed.

To post a bargain the price needs to be better than other stores not just cheaper than their own old price, that's what people are trying to point out.

  • A+ effort for OP Ozbargain community appreciates

  • you have to filter these as just saying x% off does not mean its a bargain.
example is the sheet set saying $140 down to $90, but two days ago another store has the same (and you posted it) that the price is $63.
The dorky boots are the same price at other stores (I checked Iconic) so no real deal there either.

I am not going through your whole list, I randomly choose two, but you need to check the prices and see if its an actual deal first please.

    • +1

      agreed

  • Nice post. We use a similar site for New Zealand called PriceSpy. The problem is, for example, products at Dick Smith often go up and down to the same sales point on a regular basis. So it would be interesting to see a price history to determine the "real price" of the products.

    • +1

hmm that certainly is tricky, but once i get a nice website in place and more shops to track ill certainly be spending a lot of time on the 'bargain formula'. something along the lines of comparing the current price with not only yesterdays, but maybe the last 2 weeks and only displaying if its a significant drop, to counter all those ups and downs.

  • I'm wondering if it's possible to make a 'price watch' on a certain item?

    • +1

in future when i get a pretty website going, ill definitely add the feature to request an email when a certain item drops below a price you specify!

  • Just letting you know that 4 x Eames DSW Replica Chairs - Marigold Yellow <:: is sold out

  • Great list! Thanks for effort! I don't mind listing with %off. Like others have said, doesn't mean it's a guaranteed bargain because of fluctuating prices. Still, great list of items I would have had to trawl through the website to find.

Talk about price fluctuations: the dealsdirect hyatt bookcase is back to $399 (not $200), on my iphone.

  • All the chairs seem to have jumped up in price.

    • That is true.. No more discounts on chairs across the sites.

  • Good work.
Hope you're tracking prices as well as comparing day to day. That would be the most interesting to see.
Also, can you please change it from one decimal point in the price as it looks like a menu from a fancy restaurant.

    • yes thats whats happening now. and yes i will be removing the point at the end!

  • +1

ahhhhh all the crap no one wants

  • damn the there are some things I would actually buy but dealsdirect prices seem to have gone back up?

    • well these were just overnight price drops. so since today is a new day, anything can happen. ill generate another list when i get home from work tonight and paste it in this thread. not keen on making new threads each day.

  • Great work! Are you going to host this list on a website or section of Ozbargain which will dynamically refresh/update?

    • Im working on a website for this!

  • Hi all,

I have updated the main post with todays deals. some good ones from surfstitch there (i purchased the element shirt)
