    • Regardless of which form factor SSD you get, Samsung EVO drives have extremely low power consumption— we're talking aboout 0.25 watt at idle and 1.6 watt when it's busy writing.

      To quote:

Now, traditionally mSATA SSDs have tended to have lower performance (and capacity) than SATA SSDs, but that's not because of any restrictions in the interface. And with smaller and smaller process nodes, that difference is disappearing. Many newer SATA SSDs basically just have an mSATA-sized PCB inside. And the fastest consumer-oriented SSDs now use the M.2 form factor which is at least as small as mSATA (but uses PCI-Express lanes to facilitate speeds far beyond the 550-600 MB/s cap of SATA3).

So in a nutshell, it really does not matter which SSD you buy or upgrade first. You can use any combination of SSD you want.

Both mSATA and SATA are incredibly fast, assuming they are both SATA III ports. There is no difference to the regular user. You only need one drive to install Windows on.

  • I've spent too much with SE lately.. need to resist the urge and hold back.. Although I want to upgrade my Samsung Vivotab.. :(

  • This is actually a pretty good price for an SSD. Prices on these things are dropping so fast

  • Anyone know what screws we need for these and where to get them. Or even better. Rep could you include a pair of screws with each order?

  • Any chance for a 1Tb model anytime soon, TA?

  • HAHAHAHA….. s(m)a(r)tarse. Given some of your codes lately I'm surprised the suppliers are doing it. Well done.

  • oops duped.

  • noob question will this fit to replace the 250 ssd in a asus rog gaming laptop? Don't have one just thought I'd ask

  • Hi,
Can anyone please confirm if this drive supports "Dell Inspiron 5520(built mid 2012)"?

    Thanks in advance..

    • You may need to do some of your own background check but I have a 7520 of around the same era that appears to share parts.

If your laptop did not come with a mSata drive then you will need a different daughter board (N7JHH) to be able to use an mSata. I will warn you in advance I stripped my laptop down last night to check the board as I want to put in an mSata also. You need to almost completely strip the laptop to change the board. It's easy enough to do but if your not comfortable pulling apart your laptop then its not for you.

This clip shows you how to strip it down, after you take the motherboard out you also need to take the daughter board (located top right)

I plan to contact Dell on Monday to get a price for the part from them directly (checked a couple of years ago and it was $80 delivered but you can pick it up cheaper from elsewhere, check ebay / aliexpress)

      • Thank you for the reply.
I googled and did some research about my laptop and figured out my laptop didnt come with mSata drive.
I think it supports Sata III, so I guess i got to go with Sata SSD. Not sure whats the difference between mSata and Sata SSD, need to do some more research.

        Thanks

        • Fyi got in contact with Dell today and they are supplying the part (N7JHH) for $55 delivered.

Your big difference between going a Sata3 SSD and a mSata SSD is that the laptop only supports 1 x "normal" hard drive. If you want 2x hard drives then you need to either run the second on mSata or get a DVD drive HDD cradle but in doing this you remove your DVD drive.

This means that if you want to keep your DVD drive then you may be pulling out your main hard drive and replacing it. If your not overly worried about storage space then it won't be an issue. By getting the different daughter board and running a mSata SSD then you don't have to remove anything else.

So for me once its done I will have 1 x 250gb SSD (went the smaller one), 1 x 1tb mechanical hard drive & 1 x DVD drive

          Hope this helps

          @WayneSpoon:

I know this deal is finished but figured would update this post in case anyone is doing a search and comes across this.

Got the daughter board from Dell, put in the 250gb 850 EVO mSata drive (also put in a Intel 7260 wifi card while it was apart)

The difference is night and day. the original HDD is a 5400rpm 1tb mechanical drive, I have always felt that this laptop was great on paper but performance was always poor. What a difference running the mSata SDD made, did a drive clone as only had about 180gb on my mechanical drive, this allowed me to do a direct comparison. Going through boot options (F12) when the laptop starts, timed from clicking on the drive to getting into windows and loading firefox, booting from mSata was sub 25 seconds, running the mechanical drive was like 3min 30sec and it was still trying to load desktop icons and things in the background. Resuming was also lightning fast which was a welcome change from the resuming then being unresponsive for a minute or two on the mechanical drive.

  • Pardon my ignorance, just wondering how you got the price down to 259? After entering the discount code, it only cancelled shipping costs and the total is still $275 (which is the original price).

    • sorry mate, the deal expired.
