TA, I'm waiting for the day you do some coupons for Dick Smith :P

    • +16

Funnily enough, I've PM'd them 3 times in the past. No response.

      • +7

        Dick doesn't like you huh?

        • Seems that way :(

        • @tightarse: ask for eneloops they will answer!

        • +15

@tightarse: more like Dick doesn't like tightarse. wink

        • +4

DSE are already known as TightDick, so they don't want to promote it any further :)

        • +15

Voucher code DickArse probably wouldn't go down too well with management

        • Why no laughs? I thought this was a golden comment!!

        • @tomleonhart: I think that was what SpackBace was alluding to…

        • @tomleonhart: And perhaps Dick is being anal about tightarse (runs away).

      • +2

        Tight Dick Deals :(

      • +2

        Dick..the douches with no deals.

      • +3

Shame. They need all the help they can get.

      • What we need is an sMATA Drive for your next deal ;)

  • +1

Hopefully a 1tb evo or pro would be snapped up quickly… 500gb…meh :/

  • For lack of better wording, is this the good samsung or troublesome one?

    • the 840 is the troublesome one.
The 850(this one) is the good.

But if you have the slot, get the 2.5inc ssd, cheaper and better.

      • I read the fix was ineffective, if i've got an 840 that hasn't been used yet are they refundable?

        • +1

From what I gather, it wasn't that the fix doesn't alleviate the read speed problem, but rather, it doesn't fix the issue itself. (So what they do is pretty much rewrite the old data)

          http://www.anandtech.com/show/9196/samsung-releases-second-8…

I am not sure whether that can be seen as a basis for refund, as much as I think it should, not sure about legal stuff.

    • The model has not been around for enough for someone to say it's good or bad yet, imo. Even the 840 and 840 EVO were considered alright by many people before the read speed problems started to appear. That said, they usd TLC NAND like 840 EVO (even though apparently, they've ironed out all the issues).

  • Where are the smaller capacity ones? :(

    • +4

Bigger the better… Tightarse knows this better than anyone here.

    • Some cheap small ones on Aliexpress.

      • +7

Would not recommend Ali express for computer parts like memory or storage. Buy local for warranty. You may even receive counterfeit memory or used stuff.

Cables, connectors and spare parts for laptops such as displays and keyboards are fine, but for components only buy local or from Amazon.

    • Wait for $150 250GB sales from local stores Shopping Express and MSY

  • Good deal TA.
Noob Question - Is mSATA required for laptop (11.6 inch) or we can use normal 2.5in SSD also?

    • +1

      Hi akd,

Do you have the Model of your laptop on top of your head?

      Cheers
      SE

      • Hi Rep-person, would this work in Lenovo Thinkpad laptops?

        • Highly depends on model number.

        • You need to be more specific as per scrimshaw suggested. Something like thinkpad 11e, thinkpad edge etc.

        • @ShoppingExpress: It's a Lenovo ThinkPad E431. It's got a Core i5 thingy.

        • +1

          @Maddison:
This page seems to indicate that it has an M.2 port, not MSATA

        • @frankyman: I think that's the Wireless WAN card thingy.

        • +1

          @Maddison:

          scroll further down for the

M.2 solid-state drive removal and installation instructions.

        • +2

          @Maddison:
Has a mini PCI-E for the stock wifi card, and "One M.2 Card slot for support of WWAN card or SSD" additionally to that. From the specs it looks like the only expansion port.

        • @frankyman: @CVonV: I want to replace my hard drive with one of these to make it go faster. So can I do that or not?

        • +1

          @Maddison:

          EDIT:
E431 is the second generation M2 slot.

        • @scrimshaw: Wait, what?

        • +1

          @Maddison:
The stock drive appears to be a 7mm or 9.5mm thick 2.5" drive, which you could replace. The manual warns "Although you can upgrade the hard drive, it is not designed to be removed and reinserted on a regular basis. Repeated and frequent removal, for purposes other than to upgrade for greater capacity, can cause damage to the system."

I would say it should be fine if you did replace it with a normal size SSD. It will not fit one of these MSATA drives at any rate. Your best bet would be to buy the equivalent M.2 drive from somewhere like umart, cheapest on staticice. This way you retain the original drive and can use it for additional storage. To replace it would be something like this.

        • @frankyman: Oooh, I see now. I thought this went where the hard drive lives. My bad. Thanks for your patience, links, and explanation. Appreciate it.

        • +1

          @Maddison:
All good. Also, was just reading about the different sizes of M.2 boards, not sure if the one I linked will actually fit. You might need to contact Lenovo and ask them for some clarification on the length supported by that slot if you did want to upgrade.

        • +1

          @Maddison:

Be careful with Lenovo and anything connecting internally on the mini-PCI port - I'm specifically referring to Wifi cards but may be applicable to other devices. in order to run non-Lenovo Wifi cards on the Mini-PCIe you need a WhiteList modfied BIOS. I needed one of these for my sons Hackintosh T420 (he went back to Windows, but an interesting exrercise for me)

        • @ShoppingExpress:

Does this suit Dell Inspiron 5520 Laptop?

      • +3

        Strange place to keep it.

      • The model number is - HP Pavilion 11-n035TU x360

        • Also looks like it supports M.2 rather than MSATA from this maintenance guide.

        • @frankyman: Thanks frankyman.
I will wait for M.2 deal

      • Doh, should have scrolled down.

      • +1

I hope he doesn't have the laptop on top of his head..

      • Will it fit on thinkpad x230T?

        • I'm running one in an X230 (note: not X230T), but you're best off checking the hardware specs yourself than relying on a random person on the internet saying yes.

  • +2

Makes me feel sick for paying $360 for a 500GB Samsung EVO at the local computer shop a few months ago.

  • Thanks for negotiating all these deals TA. ~AUD 275 (delivered) on Amazon and it's currently at its all time low according to the 3 camels, so this is a good price.

    http://camelcamelcamel.com/Samsung-850-mSATA-2-Inch-MZ-M5E50…

Mr Vatto does mention that the 1TB version freezes every now and then.

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/9023/the-samsung-ssd-850-evo-m…

Not sure if this is an issue with the 500GB version.

    • You wrote yourself, and link with details… it's the 1TB.

Something a firmware update will fix, I imagine.

  • Think you can get these for about $200 delivered from Amazon Global can't you?

    • +5

      Sure can… US$200

      • +2

Just reminiscing the days when the AUS dollar was strong and we actually could get it for that price…

      • Ahh OK it wasn't applying the currency conversion like it did for me before, apologies.

No, but does anyone know if there's any reason model numbers need to be that long besides stopping price matching of equivalent goods?

  • Another Mob i will never deal with, ive tired twice before, never again, last time i purchased 2 hdd's from there ebay store.

They first said it was a pricing error than told me they had no stock, also took them a long time to refund me

      Hi bti_jet,

Sorry to hear your experience with us. Due to the limitation of our current inventory system, we do meet up with overselling issues when different sales channel sold the same product at very similar period of time. This has improved over the year and we are currently in the process of upgrading to a better system to control our stock which should eliminate such issues once and for all once implemented.

Comment on the ebay post mention refunded customer straight away, but i'm giving the benefit of the doubt to you and if you are willing to consider us again, PM me your SE username so i can arrange something for you.

      Regards
      SE

      • I didn't get the refund till about 2 weeks later. The feedback you left doesn't mean much if it took that long to show in my account.

The other time I tried purchasing a phone on your website, the same thing happened.

Trying twice is enough for me. Hopefully others don't experience what I went through, in the end your only hurting your own business

        • +1

Twice in a row? If you don't mind can you please PM me more details to have a look?

          cheers

    +1 for the redemption code!

  • which Model of Mackbooks Air/Retina would work with?

  • So can someone please tell me if this will be good for a new PC build? Or is this only good for replacing a HDD on a laptop?

What motherboard should I buy to be able to utilize this drive as my primary drive?

    Thanks in advance.

    • +2

I don't think many motherboards will support mSATA in a desktop. I used an M.2 SSD as the OS drive in my new PC build and it was nice to use - no cables required, just plugged straight onto the motherboard between the PCIe slots for the graphics cards. Very neat

    • +1

I think only laptops would have msata slots. The size of the card is 1/3 of a business card, hence for laptops.

But honestly I don't see why you would want a msata for desktop.
Better off getting a 2.5 SSD, their cheaper, and probably more reliable.
If not, then aim for m.2 slots not a msata, as it is a PCI slot and "may" have faster speeds in the future.

But pretty much, if you have the slot, you can have it as a primary drive.

      • +1

You can install MSATA drives in a desktop, it does require you to buy a special PCIE express adapter for it or one that can convert MSATA to regular SATA.

  • +2

you should have to comment before you can put in reports, like with negging. who reported this as illegal/inappropriate, seriously?

    • +2

Saw that. I can only assume they're complaining about the coupon. The fun police are on the prowl :(

  • Thanks OP

  • Hi Rep,
Will this come with invoice and GST? Reason being, I am travelling and want to claim TRS.

    • +1

Besides being able to have a record of your invoice/past transactions and also print them out at your convenience, they are also Australia Stock with Australia Manufacturer's warranty

      cheers
      SE

    • +1

You need to buy at least $300 from single ABN to be able to claim TRS.

      • -1

From memory it needs to be on a single invoice, not just a single ABN.

        • @ Sike O It can be multiple purchases under the one ABN to be eligible to claim TRS.

          https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Tour/Are-you-a-traveller

Purchases are eligible for refunds if:
•they are purchased in the 60 days before you leave Australia
•your purchases from any single business total $300 (GST inclusive) or more. For example, if you bought items from one business - even on separate invoices - that together total $300, these items may be eligible for a tax refund under TRS
•you, the passenger, paid for the goods
•you have an original tax invoice for the goods
•you wear or carry the goods (unless they are liquids, gels or aerosols or oversized or bulky goods which the airline require to be checked in) as hand luggage aboard the aircraft or ship as you leave Australia, or check the goods in with your luggage after they have been verified by an officer at a Client Services counter.

        • +1

It can be multiple invoices from the same ABN

  • MX Master next !!

  • just found shoppingexpress has the M.2 version for 275 (Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD M.2 MZ-N5E500BW)

    is this a good buy?

    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/samsung-850-evo-500gb-…

    • It depends on if your system can take M2 or mSATA…But 275 for M2 is also pretty cheap…At this stage, the difference between both in terms of speed is very negligible although M2 has the potential to be much faster in future but the speed is limited by the current hardware.

    • paid $269 last week for my new i7 NUC.

      • where? please share.

        • Same website. Interesting that they adjusted the price by $6.

  • Hi Rep-person, would this work in 2012 Macbook pro?

    • you will probably need an adapter to make it fit with a bit of googling around, although i do not recommend you doing it if you are not comfortable with dismantling your Macbook pro.

  • +1

mSATArse - my Soft And Tight Arse…nice coupon…

  • Does this fit a new Toshiba 15.6
    L50-C02X laptop.?
Has a hard drive, want to upgrade to SSD to speed things up.

Does it come with the cable to clone the hard drive to the new SSD drive?

    Thanks.

  • Hi so my laptop has both a HD slot and an mSata slot. The msata slot currently has a 30gb card in it used to speed up my computer. Thinking of swapping it out from one of these and using the extra space as a normal disk. Int time I will replace both my HD with and SSD and upgrade my mSata SSD. My question is is there much of a difference between a mSATA SSD and a regular SSD. Which is more important to upgrade first? I'm hoping the upgrade of both will lead to a temperature reduction and better power consumption.
