Round the World Flights (~$1600)

1581

Firstly, a big thanks to the folks at Australia Frequent Flyer, particularly wjohn, whose post let me find this.

It's a bit difficult to explain, so bear with me (it's worth it!)

Legs

1 - Into Asia
2 - Asia to Europe
3 - Europe to America
4 - America to Australia

Dates

I've been looking at late November (post uni exams), and early December. However, with a few quick search there seems to be availability in October, March, and April. There's so many different options, so search and try your luck!

Leg 1 - Into Asia ($309)

Book a one-way flight on a budget carrier (e.g. JetStar).

Leg 2 and Leg 4 - Asia to Europe + America to Australia ($734)

There is an amazing deal for leg 2 and 4 on Etihad.
Searching for a multi-city flight on www.skyscanner.com.au:
1) Bangkok (BKK) - London (LHR)
2) New York (JFK) - Melbourne (MEL)

NOTE - These cities may be altered to suit you better!
Instead of Bangkok, another option is Tokyo (similar price). Instead of London, you can pick any European city that Etihad flies to (they are all similarly priced). Instead of New York you can try Los Angeles (similar price). Instead of Melbourne you can pick your Australian city of choice.

Leg 3 - Europe to America ($555)

Find the cheapest flight you can from your European city of choice to your American city of choice.

With my example:

Melbourne - Bangkok - London - New York - Melbourne
MEL - BKK - LHR - JFK - MEL
Total = $1597

P.S. You could potentially throw in a stop-over in Abu Dhabi if you alter the multi-city search :)

    This is NOT actually a round-the-world flight. The "Leg 4" flight from New York to Melbourne on Etihad actually comes back the SAME way around the world, because it comes back via Abu Dhabi. That is actually longer than if you got a flight to come back via LAX. So the route OP has outlined NEVER crosses the pacific ocean or the date line.

    BUT if you did want to go around the world you could get a cheap flight from NY to Vegas or LAX, then fly on Allegiant Air to Honolulu, and Jetstar from HNL back to SYD/MEL/BNE…

      It is around the world in the sense that you are visiting 3 continents:
      Asia, Europe, and North America?

      • You've found a great deal but I wouldn't want people to be disappointed thinking that they would actually circle the globe by booking with your steps.

        It's half-way around and then back the same way.

        For people who do actually circle the globe eastwards they actually get one fewer sunrise and sunset than if they stayed home. If you go the other direction then you get one extra, like Phileas Fogg.

        • Fair enough

          @extremedeal: If visiting three continents was considered to be around the world, that would mean a visit to Istanbul (both sides) from Cairo is an around the world trip!

    • They offer other fares that are slightly more than original deal posted that actually do travel round the world. Plus on one ticket with baggage and not flying on low cost carriers like Jetstar.

      Agreed. This is a heavily misleading post that will only serve to confuse and disappoint people. It's simply a return journey to the USA via Europe. It also likely involves open-jaw segments which will add on to the total price. It cannot and should not be compared to One World or Star Alliance round-the-world fares which are mostly mileage based.

  • So are there options for avoiding asia leg as my wife doesn't want to fly over asia over xmas due to weather.

    Brisbane->LA
    LA->New York
    New York->London
    London->Brisbane via anywhere in the states.

    • Via Johannesburg.

    Please don't book flights through either eDreams or Travelgenio (as shown in the Skyscanner screenshots). They both very shady sites with a negative reputation. Use something like Google Flights to search instead. Ideally book directly through the airline wherever possible, or use a reputable site (such as STA Travel, Webjet, Cheapoair, or Kayak)

    • Gflights or Bing Flights are excellent

    • airtickets r a scam too….

    • What makes you recommend CheapoAir Daniel15 - have you used them, and had a good experience ?
      I would be interested to hear your perspective, because I have mainly heard bad things about them.

      A quick Google will indicate a plethora of dissatisfied people, which you could go on reading for days. I became suspicious about them when some of their prices were significantly different to all the other sites. As I investigated, I noticed that, in numerous instances, CheapoAir continued to advertise and take payment for itineraries that all the other search sites listed as "sold out" or special pricing "expired".

      If you read the pages of complaints, a lot of them centre around CheapoAir advertising out of date airfares, taking your payment for said fares, and then neglecting to inform you that they never actually booked the tickets for you.
      Even in many scenarios where people have been told (sometimes long after the fact) that CheapoAir didn't actually secure the tickets, CheapoAir are often accused of then asking for additional funds from the customer to purchase new tickets (that are almost always more expensive) and/or refusing to give the customer's money back in a timely manner if they don't want to proceed.

      Based on what I read about them, I wonder if they deliberately engage in "bait and switch" tactics to help them make some extra sales, and rely on the fact that people will panic about their forthcoming trip, and pay over the odds, just so their holiday is not disrupted.

      • I've booked through Cheapoair two times and both experiences were pretty positive. The flights were only San Francisco to New York though, not long haul. The price of the tickets directly through the airline went up significantly, but Cheapoair still had the cheaper price. I booked through them and everything went fine. Got my tickets via email within a day, and the confirmation code worked on the airline's site (so the tickets were properly issued).

        I wouldn't really use them (or any other online agency other than STA Travel) for expensive long-haul flights. In general I'd suggest only going with STA Travel (if you're under 26) or directly through the airline, unless it's significantly much more expensive to do so. Paying a little bit more to book directly through the airline is worth it.

      • Booked my wife's trip to the US through them a month ago.. They were fine for us.
