Restaurant/Dining/Food Chains We'd Like to See down under

Here are some of mine:
In and Out Burger: While they are only confined to the USA for now and the Southern States the food is made in store, they cut the potatoes directly in the kitchen, slice the lettuce and Tomatoes.
Denny's: because sometimes you have a 3am hunger craving and their pancakes are waaaaaay better then McDonald's pancakes I hear.
Cinnabon: because I don't know anywhere else in Australia that does good cinnamon scrolls.
Panera bread: because of the healthy factor. A wide variety healthy options at this place.
Dunkin Donuts: so I can compare Dunkin Donuts to Krispy Kreme…

    • Same as Thai food. Most Asian restaurants in Sydney caters for the western taste buds.

    • It would also taste way better knowing you only paid about 2-4 Aussie dollars for your Malaysian food though.

    • Papparich is not bad. Their roti tastes pretty close to Malaysian stuff, but their sambal sauce is a little too sweet.

  • A few of my London favs
    pizza east
    chicken shop
    dirty burger
    Big Apple Hot Dogs

    Kwik E Mart?

  • Apart from what everyone has said I'd welcome:

    Pielogy
    Red Robin
    85 Degrees Bakery
    Sonic (awesome shakes!)
    The Habit
    Boiling Point
    Panera Bread
Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles
    Whichwich

Virgin Airlines please sell us tickets to LA for $800 or less!

    • 85 Degrees Bakery

      Aren't these in Sydney? http://www.85cafe.com.au/html-au/store-locations-au.htm

Perhaps there is hope they'll expand over to QLD for you :)

      • The ones in Australia are missing some of the American classics unfortunately. Like the Taro Bun, Taro Freeze and Coffee Jelly Freeze. =(

    • There's a similar joint to Boiling Point in Sydney called 'House of Crabs', seafood cooked in bags with sauces except so much more expensive than the US!

  • is the Dennys the same as Dennys that used to be here? (prob closed 80s/90s)

And Dunkin Donuts has opened and closed many times in Australia.

    • +2

Yes it was, a lot of fast food chains closed down in the 80s along wih Denny's. They are not up to the standard of Pancake Parlour, but they are reliably good in the US.
Dunkin is just an average donut chain by any measure, and there are numerous outlets here still.

      • Yeah, I wonder why people say dunkin donut cos the stores opened here were very much like any donut store in oz. Probably why they tried reopening years later in Bris and failed again.

    • Denny's smells funny, but decent $6 taco at 3am is awesome.

    • Denny's is a great place to go for a post hangover breakfast, or just in general for a cheap junk food feast (<$10).

  • +1

Tim Ho Wan (only michelin star yum cha) they have only expanded in asia. >$30 for a michelin star meal for family of 5.
    Jollibee 😋
Yoogane (check it out! food is amaazing)
Coco Ichiban (omg seriously why isn't there one in oz yet) the most famous curry franchise in japan.
Pret a Manger (what i miss most about England!)
Dunkin Donuts Bagels (what i miss most living in NYC) my $2 bagel bfst salmon and cream cheese. Why the shops in oz dont sell bagels?

    • +1

there was a great bagel store in Brisbane maybe 5 years back - they freshly baked all day, yum. and were pretty cheap. but it closed down after a couple of years - no-one wanted bagels as a take away.

      • +3

There's a pretty decent one now on Adelaide st called Bagel Boys, does takeaway filled bagels as well as buying them unfilled. They seem to do a really decent trade.

        • i will have to check it out.
the one i was thinking of was Albert st, near Gilhooleys

        • +1

@PVA: oh I never knew of that one! This one is just down from king George square. Same people that do the stall in the farmers markets on Wednesday I believe

        • http://www.greatbagel.com.au/ great bagel and coffee co is my go to place for bagels..

        • @Chik5555:
Do they make the bagels on site.
The other one I mentioned that closed, cooked on site. You could see the big vat of boiling water (so you know they were real bagels and not just bread shaped like bagels.

Are the prices decent - farmer market usually means expensive :)

        • @PVA:

It sits in the 8.50 - 12.00 range from memory. I've only been to their farmers market one and it's delish. Not sure where they make it.

    • +1

Yes, CoCo Ichiban, came here to vote for that one. They have a few restaurants in the US apparently, come to Australia!

    • +2

There's a Tim Ho Wan in Sydney and it's terrible!

      • Can confirm I've read plenty of bad reviews of this place. Haven't been myself.

        https://www.zomato.com/sydney/tim-ho-wan-chatswood

      • I've been to a few and while the Chatswood store isn't as good as the ones in Asia, some of their dishes are certainly of much higher standard than the usual yum cha places.

      • oh really? i didnt know but the one in sum sui po is really good

    • +1

Really? — Jollibee is the worst attempt at burgers in the Philippines and if it wasn't for the poor millions who don't know any better it simply wouldn't exist. They have also had numerous scandals over the years with substituting other animal products into their slimy patties.

      • much prefer eating a Max's chicken or something a little more substantial… we just had potato corner open here in Sydney and its good for a cheat meal…

        • Max's chicken? Is that brisbane or does this exist in syd now?
edit: nm it's a filo burger joint you mean.

but fyi, Brisbane have an chicken joint that double smoke their birds and serve w/ with garlic sauce (not as good as eljannahs, but their chicken is juicy and moist)

    • Tim Ho Wan have several stores open now in NSW - though all around Metro Sydney.

  • +2

Carl Jnrs, Wendys, dennys all in NZ however

    • Dunkin' Donuts is also in NZ. I did enjoy the team colour donuts during the last rugby world cup.

  • +2

and the best one is Fergburger!! omg i contemplate flying there just for my Fergburger!

  • +2

    bubba gump shrimp co

    • -3

You just won the internet , well done

  • +1

Jack in the Box. Delicious curly fries.

  • A bit offtopic but for beverage's… Does anyone know of a place in melb to get fresh ice cold sugar cane juice. How about actual sugar canes where can I buy them cheap… Not from Asian stores as they tend to be imported and dry

    • +1

Outside Saigon Market in Footscray,VIC there is a small shop that sells Bubble Tea and Fresh Sugar Cane juice with a splash of Cumquat.

  • +2

Shake Shack. If you all thought In and Out Burgers are good, these are the next level.

  • +3

Australia is such a crappy place to invest in a franchise.

    • Not for McD

  • Jojis from Fiji. You haven't had Chinese food if you haven't had Jojis!

  • Häagen-Dazs.

    Cold Stone.

    • +1

      Yes Cold Stone!!

      • Aren't they just a similar concept to Cold Rock (which has seemingly tanked)? I've never heard of them until now.. reading their website and their ice cream does sound like actual proper ice cream. mmm

There's a place called Goodberry's Creamery in the ACT which I miss SO much. They make their ice cream in store too, but it's frozen custard as opposed to the crap we get usually everywhere else. Tastes incredible. They also mix whatever you like into it. They do shakes etc too.

        http://goodberrys.com.au/

  • +3

    Pret a Manger

    • the best!

  • +2

Chevys Fresh Mex. Good value Mexican family restaurant. They're all over California where all the Mexicans live!

  • And Hokka Hokka Tei in Japan is awesome for bento lunches (Japanese lunch boxes for example with salad, rice, teriyaki chicken etc.) and at a cheap price point too.

  • +2

Quiznos. Have tried it in Singapore several times and it's way better than Subway.

    • I agree right there they were awesome and THEY pioneered toasting subs but sadly Skiptomylou they pulled out of the Australian market a while back…. there were massive lines l remember on opening day in my local store at blacktown in Sydney and for a while they did a good trade until I think the recession hit… heres what wikipedia said "In 2002, Wendy's acquired the rights to the brand for franchises in Australia, and later, New Zealand, but was unsuccessful in launching the chain in either country"

  • +1

In n out IMO is waaayyyyyyy overated. No variety, and the chips aint that good. Dennys on the other hand has some sensational menu items!!

    • +1

Yeah, I'd rather have Nation's Burgers honestly (also love their chili fries), and what can I say about Dennys.. something about their buffalo wings at 4:00am right after a night shift that is very satisfying haha.

  • +1

A Chicken Shop from London would be a nice addition!

  • I'd do anything for Canberra's Goodberry's Creamery to come to Sydney.

    http://goodberrys.com.au/

Anyone else from here had it??

    • +1

I had it, yesterday, after seeing your post. :3 I love them.

  • Grand Lux
    Cheesecake Factory
    Magianos
    Carmines

  • Saizeriya - a relatively inexpensive Japanese chain of family-style Italian restaurants. loved it for it's price, taste, consistency and inexpensive booze.

Ooh, a thread after my own heart. As an junk food enthusiast who has been to the US a bunch, (and eaten my share of junk food) here's my pick. A lot of these are region-specific chains, though. I do highly recommend them if you're in the area, they're mostly west coast, some are near FL and NV.

Blazing Onion — Literally the best burger place I've ever been to. It's a sit-down place. They give you unlimited fries! They're mostly a Washington State chain though.
Five Guys Burgers and Fries — More takeaway-ish than Blazing Onion. Also good. This is the place that made that youtube food vlogger Daym Drops kinda famous. They just kinda throw the fries in the bag.
Carl's Jr — Known for their risque advertising, it was kinda hard to find in the US for me, there was one in Singapore I ate at ALL the time, though.
Firehouse Subs — I prefer it to both Subway and Quiznos.
Jimmy Johns — Likewise. The founder is a huge dbag though.
Taco Time — A marginally nicer version of Taco Bell that my boyfriend swears by, where they give you 'mexi fries' (tater tots) with each meal.
Taco Bell — I actually like Taco Bell better than TT because they give me sour cream without me having to ask for it on the side like TT. Don't tell my boyfriend.
Coldstone Creamery — Yeah, enough said. Cake batter is my fave.
Panera Bread — I just really really like sandwiches.
Boudin Bakery — This is a SanFran exclusive chain. Better than Panera, in my opinion. Really great soups too.
Earl of Sandwich — Did I mention I like sandwiches? Their Philly cheese steak sandwich is really great, considering its a chain.
Menchies — A delicious froyo place where it's too easy to overeat at. Did you know Jelly Belly jelly beans are delicious in froyo? They go all weirdly hard and chewy. Now you know.
Perkins Restaurant — Kinda like Denny's but better and not as well known.
Original Pancake House — Where you can eat a Dutch Baby!

Of course there's Denny's and Chick-fil-A, and Sonics and Wendy's and Jack in the Box and the obligatory stuff like that you see everywhere. I tried to include only the places I found super memorable and that were a bit different.

But more than anything, I hope we get those Cola Cola Freestyletouch-screen coke fountains. I know some people hate post-mix, but I looove it, and I wanna make my strawberry coke and orange creamsicle coke combos.

EDIT: I also wish we had Yoshinoya back, and some Japanese chains too.

    • +2

Blazing Onion — Literally the best burger place I've ever been to. It's a sit-down place. They give you unlimited fries! They're mostly a Washington State chain though.

Their food looks incredible… and free fries! omfg. I'm living in the wrong country.

    • +1

Ooh, I fly to Washington State every year for work and haven't heard of Blazing Onion. Looks like I have something to look forward to on my next trip, thanks ceebee!

    • Five Guys Burgers and Fries

      Quinnspiracy?

    • Geez, you might weigh a tonne after eating all that, but at least it'd be a happy tonne! :)

  • +1

Haldiram - great indian food and sweets, miss it so much here

    • There was one in Hampton Park. The food was amazing!

      • was? is it closed now? do you know if it is genuine haldiram franchise?

  • +2

Benihana. Cheesecake factory. In N Out. Mel's Drive Inn. Serendipity. Dean and Deluca.

    • a + for Mel's Dine Inn!
      best customised burger … ever!

  • Pretzelmaker - I've only tried their mini pretzel dogs, but I've never had a bread product anywhere near as tasty before or after.

  • +1

    Western Bagel
    Panda Express
    Red Robin
    Yoshinoya

and for anyone who's been there-
Portos Bakery- the best Cuban sandwiches and pastries

    • "and for anyone who's been there-
Portos Bakery- the best Cuban sandwiches and pastries"

OMG! Yeah!!! We always made sure we make a pit stop at their Glendale store!

  • +2

Rainforest Cafe (even have the perfect location in mind for it!), Wendy's, Cheesecake Factory, Bubba Gump's and Planet Hollywood :)

  • +1

HOOTERS! Because they have excellent food :)

  • +4

    Cluckin' Bell

    Burger Shot

    World of Coq

    • Well Stacked Pizza Co.

      Up-n-Atom

      Mamma's Restaurant

      Marco's Bistro

      Rusty Brown's Ring Donuts

      Kovski Diner

  • +1

Add the shake shack to that list

  • Dunkin Donuts :) nommmnommm

  • Pret A Manger, loved this chain when travelling the UK. Their falafel wrap was seriously yummy :)

    • Pret A Manger's website - http://www.pret.co.uk/en-gb/ Organic coffee/tea, fresh wraps, baguettes, salads, soups, fruit salad etc, really nice stuff :)

    • Hmm maybe it's just me then. I'm based in London now and can't help but feel resentment for pret a manger… Lol

I get that it's supposed to be convenient but everywhere I turn my head there it is always busy! But it's just cold sandwiches mainly. Just reminds me of 7/11 sandwiches in Australia.

      • I never tried the sandwiches but the wraps and baguettes were really nice and not even same ball park as 7/11 they were gourmet and seriously nice

      • +1

the quality of Pret is incomparable to 7/11. Every time i look at a 7/11 sandwhich i can't help but wonder how long ago it was made and how long ago its ingredients were actually walking/or in the ground. If ever.

I'm pretty certain pret doesn't ever carry food overnight (i hope whats left is donated). They fresh make the salads, sandwiches, rolls and other things which can be made in store and continue to make products during the day.

    PF Chang's

  • Spizzico - Italian takeaway pizza by the slice

Any of the southern Chinese Sichuan chains. Although there were a few promising places opening up in the expanding Sydney china town.

Denny's - as above. Far better than an InOut

Quanjude - Beijing roast duck (Peking duck). Although this has opened up in Melbourne according to the Internet. Must check it out.

Taco Bell - as above. Good stuff

Not a chain as such, but the little carts on the streets in China selling these crepe type things. jianbing. Love them. A few places have started selling them here, nothing like the local version tho.

    • +2

Mmmm I ain't had authentic jianbing but there's some new chain called Bing Boy or something in Adelaide, some of them are delicious … they sort of fill you up but leave you feeling light at the same time. Maybe cos of high protein?

      • yup they call it vietnamese street food. they have one at hyperdome and its the only reason we go to hyperdomw.

    • Quanjude.. will try next time in Mlb
