  • Excellent find. Found $871 in April also to Denver and also $871 to JFK. $759 to LAX.

  • Mel <-> Vegas via LAX 20/4/16 - 10/5/16 $1827 total for 2 people!

  • Great Prices in this deal - Sydney to LAX for $729 return, Melb to LAX $728, Bris to LAX $736.

I managed to resist the last time this came up. Now I am tempted all over again. Pity about the exchange rate.

It's still possible to 'do' the US on a budget with these airfares, plunging Ozzie notwithstanding. Use Priceline to 'name your own' hotel price, use Restaurant.com coupons to get cheaper meals, CarHire3000 to get best available car rental rates and Groupon for entertainment. Go for it .. :-) .. !!

      • I had a look at Carhire3000, and I dont see any deals that stand out??

        • What you probably are not taking into account is that the CH3000 price INCLUDES full insurance that almost any other booking avenue will charge you extra for. The insurance alone is worth $10 to $25 a day depending on what and where….of course you could wing it elsewhere without insurance!

        • @cornucopia:

Oh Yes i see it includes CDW. Thanks :)

@mayo88: just sharing my experience with dollar car rental

picking the car up in SF, i was told that i needed to prepay for fuel upfront, some nonsense etc (i booked from carhire3000). i knew this was a scam, but weighed up the cost of arguing back with the guy, at the risk of him giving me a crappy car (ive read online that if they dont have your car, they tell you what they have and you can take it or leave it). i decided to just cop it on the chin and pay for it. got my convertible mustang in the end (last one too and got in as soon as they opened).

      • Hey im just browsing this thread, even though I've already booked in my flights to the USA later this year.

I'm really going to need to hire a car for certain legs of my trip, but I'm under 25 years old, which means additional fees will be charged to me!
Even if I find a way to reduce that.. the pricing is not very good for car rental in the USA.. I thought it would be cheaper!
CareHire3000/Can rentals don't have cars available with the companies they work with. So I will keep looking around.

Do you have any further tips? IT would be greatly appreciated!

        • where are you going? (la, ny etc)
          when do you need it?
          are you 21 or over?
what are the current prices you've been quoted?
what kind of car are you after?

        • @madmouse58:

          Hi Madmouse -

          I'm 23 and just seeking a compact/cheap deal (although I would welcome a free/cheap upgrade to a 6 cylinder car).

I'm going all over the place, but there are some examples:

LA (a street/hotel location) on 13th OCtober to San Franciso, returning car on 17th October.

I've managed to get a a fair quote from Hertz (although Im worried they will tack on $25 a day due to my age, despite my USAA membership). They will charge $290 - $300 for this trip, if I pay now. Budget were quoting $425 + for the same dates.

Then from Albuquerque pick up to drop off in Las Vegas , from 15th November to 19th November - I got quotes for almost $600. Its not too bad, but even in Australia I can hire cars for $60-$70 a day.

        • @MelBourne: try going through carhire3000 and set your pickup point as LAX. they have a rental centre so its not actually at the airport.

not entirely sure if youll escape the $25usd rate

youll find that usually, picking cars up at the airport will offer cheaper pricing. if your hotel isnt too far, just uber/lyft it there to the rental centre pick up the car and drive back, or uber/lyft there with your luggage and just drive off to SF

What to see in Denver apart from shootings?

    • It's the gateway to the Rockies and the best skiing in Nth America (that should stir up some argument!!)

    • +1

Lots apparently. http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attractions-g33388-Activities-… but with an avg. high of 13degrees and avg low of -3degrees in March, not sure many people from Brisbane would survive anyway…

    • Denver is an excellent city. Weather, food, drink, history, nature, sun, snow, it's severely underrated.

    • Colorado is a great destination especially if you like mountains. Rocky Mountain National Park, Pikes Peak, Mt Evans drive, skiing as has been mentioned, Telluride, Mesa Verde National Park, plenty of railways through the mountains. Also it is not too far from Jackson Hole which can be your base for Grand Teton and Yellowstone.

    • US Air Force Academy is only about an hour south of Denver.

    • the Last Dinosaur

  • Sydney - LA flights from October through to April seem to be about $765 for all the dates that I check. Nice deal.

QF/AA are supposed to align their fares on this route so the prices should be the same. So this is most likely a mistake fare as they probably forgot to put fuel surcharge in the base fare (as QF have done now), so book fast!
Should change the title to SYD/MEL/BRI to LAX as that is the cheapest. The domestic add-ons are full price so makes the flight to places other than LAX expensive (except JFK because they can codeshare with QF on that). One could just fly to LAX and catch one of their low cost airlines domestically for an even cheaper deal.

    • Ah, no, I wouldn't do that. The current prime time LAX <-> Denver fare for March is around AUS$400 with a proper airline. You can get cheaper with Spirit if you don't have ANY bags!! Search for yourself on Skyscanner. This makes $900 Bri <-> Den via LAX with front line carriers, prime time flights and all direct well night unbeatable. And since you're on an international thru ticket you won't pay any baggage fees to and from Denver which will save you a further $150 pp!!

  • Looking at booking flights for honeymoon, never been overseas before. Can anyone tell me how much baggage is included? Do you need a passport to book or can I get that later? Does anyone think the price will get at all cheaper?
    Thanks for any help

    • It wont get cheaper. So book now, You dont need a passport to book. But you'll need to enter your details into Qantas web site before you leave.

  • Doesn't seem to be a point to choose a seat? When is that available?

  • American Airlines also has one of the better frequent flyer programs.

  • Prices back to normal, missed out :(

    • Yep, confirm GONE, Skyscanner says $907 still, but AA says no, $1257 now. .. :-( .. !! Busy morning at AA, now you see it, now you don't!!

    • im still showing the same prices via expedia.com (US not AU)

      EDIT: yep nvm, just changed

  • yep dead

  • I booked Brisbane to LAX for $760 with Tripsta via Iwantthatflight after this was flagged expired. I'm expecting my credit card to get hit again.

  • So did anyone actually book this fare, and has it been honoured?

Just curious as I got the QF fares and was going to pull the trigger on this one - 2 trips to the US in 6 months is fine by me - but by the time I got to my other office it was all done and dusted.

    • next time mate, if you need to think, just do it through expedia.com, you can freely cancel within 24hrs

keep to ozb motto; "buy now, regret later"

      • Oh I was ready to go, always am. I have so much stuff at home purchased under the "buy now, regret later" moto.

I booked the QF flights in the middle of a conference I was attending and am trying to work out the other details now. I thought I had an hour to get from one office to the other but alas by the time I got here, the fares had been withdrawn.

At least on the bright side, I don't need to convince my wife to go to the USA again with the 5 kids - that may have been the hardest part of this deal.

    • I booked Sydney to LAX for $780 and it was ticketed right away :) I received a receipt overnight and have already added it to my Qantas account!
