  • P8700 (fastest C2D notebook chip?), HD4650 and all other components decked out for only $1095 = bargain.

Only disadvantage is the VHP -> W7 upgrade (not pre-installed), but totally worth it at this price.

  • down side is the 16:9 ratio….
even then the screen res is a little weird

  • yep i got one of these and it plays every game ive thrown at it with ease.

  • Wish they had a store in the Eastern Suburbs…

  • pretty good deal, the gfx card while not that powerful is good for alot of games on medium.

I have a similar setup in my dell studio 16 that i paid $2600 for about 2-3 months ago. I have a ssd drive and RGBLED lcd but still for $1500 less its a good comparitive laptop

  • Hmm, was considering getting the Asus UL80VT from the US (about AU$1100 shipped incl tax). But this one looks decent too.

Want a laptop for gaming and office work. Battery life is a huge bonus but I suspect this Samsung will fall flat in that respect.

  • All laptops nowadays have auto power saving features to lower power consumption when hardware resources use is low don't they?

Unless your refering to Samsungs build quality. I have heard Samsung harddrives aren't reliable, also a workmate of mine had problems with his new Samsung LCD TV as well.

    • ive had a samsung lcd tv for 2 years. a few samsung hard drives also and all have performed flawlessly +++

  • Good deal but this is far from a high end gaming laptop.

    • +1

I agree. I'm not knocking the deal, it is reasonable value, but calling it "high end gaming" is totally misleading.

High end for laptop CPUs would start at a T9400 C2D (2.53GHz 6MB cache) and go up to T9900 C2D (3.06GHz 6MB). This is ignoring the extreme series C2Ds which can be clocked into the high 3's if the laptop BIOS allows it (which of course high end gaming laptops do allow).

As for the GPU you are looking at a definite mid-range gaming card in the HD4650. I mean it sounds good with the 1GB of dedicated VRAM, but its not the memory size that counts, its the memory bandwidth. Have a look here for laptop GPU comparisons…
      http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Graphic-Cards.130…

  • Good price for a midrange gaming laptop.

MSI currently have my #1 gaming laptop for under $2500:
    http://www.gamedude.com.au/prod_show.php?art_no=nbMSgt725_ga…

    • that laptop isn't good value at all

    • how is that MSI laptop good value?

      • +1

Never said it was good value ;)

This Samsung is great value as I've seen them for around $500 more but if I had my choice of any gaming laptop to own, I would own the MSI.

For value, I recommend a used Dell 9400 with 17" 1920X1080 screen and 256MB Geforce Go 7900 GS which goes for @ $800.

        • Mine's 1920x1200, has served me well, but the GFX card looks like it's blown 2 months out of warranty :(
Damn good machine for the last 3 years though.

    • +1

He never said it was good value, only that it's his #1 gaming laptop. :)

    Guys
Im sorry but I am not aware of a game this notebook will not play,
if anyone can point out a a game it will not play properly while the laptop is running on full performance mode I will change the title.

    • try "need for speed" 13 and turn on all effects…

  • How rare are 1GB Grapchis?
Might want to fix the title ;)

    • -1

its not about being rare, this is not an endangered animal,
its a laptop that will play any game, and i dont mean by switching off features,
if you can post a game here it doesnt work well with, i will change the title,
so far nobody is able to point out a game it will not work with, so the title stays,
I am happy to agree with anyone, as long as there is some proof.

That MSI machine is rubbish for $2600,
you would be better off buying 2 of these Samsung R620's, and have some money left over to buy 10 slabs of crown lager
      or 240 bottles of crown.
      :)

      • That comment was about the grapCHIS in the title, and while you are at it, please remove the "High End". This proof you apparently require is here… http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4650…

A snippet from the introduction on that page…
"The ATI Mobilty Radon HD 4650 from AMD is a DirectX 10.1 middle-class notebook graphics adapter."

        and…

"Most DirectX 9 games (like Call of Duty 4, F.E.A.R., or Unreal Tournament 3) should be playable in medium to high details (in 1024x768). Demanding DX10 games from 2008 like Crysis run only in low-medium details fluently."

I'm not saying it can't be used for gaming, its just not "high end", not even close.

        • why would it not be high end, if there is no game it cannot play?

          • @redtiger: Why would it be "high end" if it is "middle class"? Please read the links i posted above. And the other answers from other members. There is a big difference between being able to play a game, and being able to play it like a high end machine does. Pretty much any laptop can "play" any game, that doesn't mean all those laptops are high end.

I took you at your word about someone showing you some proof, now I wonder if you have some sort of vested interest. So I give up, go ahead and call it "super ultra bling bling high end" for all I care, I was only trying to help those members who might not know any better, and who are being misled by you.

            • @stumo: dude
you still have not told me a game it will not play with all features turned on.
I am asking everyone to show my a game it will not play with full features turned.

No one has showed any proof, they just post graphic card reviews, that doesnt mean anything to me, personally I dont really care, I am just trying to point out something.

              Therfore,
if it can play any game with all features running, then why would it not be high end?

I also understand what you guys are saying, all I am saying is, show me actually why.
I am not talking about some nerd review on a graphic card, I am actually talking about someone using this laptop to play high end games
Very simple, no need to make accusations.

My friend bought one 2 days ago, and we installed and played Crysis 2008 in full mode, and it was fine. I am confident, becuase I have tried it myself, I was just waiting for someone to post something contrary,
so I know the truth, and as you can see for 2 days nobody has said otherwise.
Thanks for the graphics card review though, it doesnt mean much comparred to a "real" test.

I was only trying to prove that a lot of these reviewers seem to just make up stuff, I am not trying to make any of you guys look bad. MY beef is with the reviewers,
I am not misleading anybody, to the contrary I believe reviwers are and by you posting there untested findings you are misleading them also.
but we are getting side tracked, becuase i am getting accused of working for MLN again, I dont even see how MLN would benefit from my rants anyway. If I was going to gain anything, I would just change the titel and be done with it/
So I thought I would just post my findings now,

I personally have run one of the most graphic intensive games on this machine and it ran just fine, so my title stays, you guys who keep Negging my comments have obviously not tested this machine to prove otherwise but would rather beleive some link about a graphics card.

              Have a great Xmas all!

              • +1

@redtiger: Just so you do realize, he did state that Crysis wouldn't run on full spec. I think that's the case in point that you were looking for..? Have you tried to run Crysis with the best available settings?

Nobody's knocking the laptop, mate — don't take it personally. He is merely stating that "high-end" is not a matter of opinion; it's a relative measurement based upon what's available on the market, which there are plenty of better GPUs that would be deemed "high-end" before this one. Again - don't take it personally, he's just offering some friendly advice.

If you like your lappy, great. Keep it. Don't push misinformation onto others though.

                • -1

                  @pais: ok,
it works fine with crysis on full mode, ALREADY STATED I TESTED IT
                  again
I am not quoting a nerd review, I am quoting an actual test on this exact laptop.

Next time i will just keep all my info to myself, go get ripped with crap graphic card reviews and line up at JB like losers.
Im not posting on ozbargain anymore, Im sick of you guys who quote rubbish links and sites.
Again I couldnt care less where you buy your computers from,
happy getting slammed by the retailers who get these BS websites to review crap you you go and buy and pay the premium.
                  Im outta here

                  • @redtiger: Wow, PMS?

                  • +1

@redtiger: It's funny how you get all agro saying noone can prove it doesn't run with all features on max, yet you can't even prove yourself that it will run with PLAYABLE framerates if everything is on max. What difference are your 'real' tests and the tests from others?

                    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qxL0V9NnZI

This video gets 25-30fps on medium settings and not at native resolution. Considering that the gpu is the main factor in gaming performance, I'd trust this video and other sites than one man on ozbargain who's just talking words.

The fact is, this graphics card is not high end. It may play a lot of games well with adjusted settings but if it can't play them well on max settings it's not high end. You're not going to post on ozbargain anymore? Noones bashing the deal. It's a good deal. You're just getting upset and taking this personally.

                  • @redtiger: Before responding, try thinking rationally and note that I have voted positive for the deal — it's definitely a bargain. Also, try re-reading my earlier post, as it asks QUESTIONS, rather than makes blatant statements or derogatory remarks (that somehow you seem to be taking from it..??)

Your overreactions are unwarranted and misguided; if you think it's a high-end laptop, then okay, keep thinking that. The posts were to inform others (and yourself) that this is not deemed high-end (and I say this as someone who has studied computer science); stop being so rigid and accept that although I'm sure you spent a lot of $$ on your laptop (and it's a good laptop, at that), it's not high-end by today's standards. Chill out, buddy.

One last note, what makes your opinion any more valid than a test done under controlled conditions from these "rubbish sites"? Sheeeeeeesh.

Edit: Going through all the MLN-pushing posts that you write in here (+'ive firsthand reviews on every laptop they have, somewhat insider information into their stock levels) — this all starts to make sense now.

  • best value laptop i've seen

  • Can anyone comment on whether this laptop suffers from excessive heat? And noise?

    • it is a very well built and designed machine, i doubt it will have these problems.

  • Good price - nice machine.

    Have recommended it to workmate

  • Got the last one at JB Hifi for exactly $1000 with $100 worth of accessories :D
