      So you've tried both before…

We used to have a Nespresso Latissima machine. Lasted us about 2 years or so. We have now moved to an automated machine with coffee beans. The price per kg for nespresso pods is staggering it turns out.

You only get about 5-6 g of coffee in each pod so you end up paying about $100 per kg. Having gone to an automated machine that grinds and pours your coffee for not much more than what we paid for the latissima plus we would never go back to nespresso or other pods again!

    • This! Learning this now, however we rarely buy official nespresso pods anymore, offbrand varieties can be had for 10/$5

There doesn't seem to be a sale price, it says "was $399, not $399" doesn't seem like a bargain?

    • Isn't it $339 now?

    • It says $339 on their main page. Must be something wrong with their site.

My comment was supposed to say 'now', accidently swiped 'not'.

Sorry take that back, I miss read the price…too many 3's a 9's.

Agree need to get off the pods for the environment, what automated machine did you get, would you recommend?

    • You can bring the used back to Nespresso shop for recycling but only if there is one near you. I thought of moving to non-pod coffee machine but ain a lot of cleaning and maintenance to do?

      • Not much more than with a nespresso

    • This is the Machine we got. Delonghi Espresso Coffee Machine Magnifica S

      http://www.betta.com.au/delonghi-ecam22110sb-espresso-coffee…

Cannot fault the machine at all although haven't had it long. The beans side is automatic (hopper up the top to put the beans into plus a further little compartment if you have separate already grinded beans which is great if you have a particular person that wants something different they can use the pre-grinder compartment) just need to froth your own milk.

Delonghi are running a Redemption for bonus packs at the moment (better promotion than what we got!).

See https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/205919 (my first deal posting. got to say this site becomes addictive!) for more details on the redemption bonuses being offered..

That's why I am still on pods, the recycling thing is a marketing scam, they don't actually recycle most of the pods returned. Neither the plastic ones or aluminium ones are great for our health.

Just need an affordable, easy to clean, automated grinding machine. Well I can dream

    • Neither the plastic ones or aluminium ones are great for our health.

      What you talking about Willis.

  • Looks like other models also have the same cash back offer.

  • Drink instant. Cheap and good for the environment.

  • Same sale at good guys

Why people buy pods over auto grinding is probably linked to IQ - they can only grasp things in the short term, then spend much effort in arm waving to sear the cognitive dissonance

    • +5

Or they may only make 1 or 2 coffees a week making the price per cup a lower priority decision item as opposed to
-convenience and smaller bench top footprint
-ability to have a wider variety of flavour/strengths due to not needing to buy large amounts of beans
      -quicker clean up

      Etc etc

I would attempt to link iq to someone's inability to grasp various purchasing requirements but as I have a nespresso machine at home I might not be smart enough..

      • -2
        • An auto grinder doesn't require a pod to be put in every time, hence more convenient
        • A jar of freeze dried coffee has less footprint
        • Blind testing shows that pod coffee is poorer in taste - so it might suggest that people are driven by fancy names & colourful packaging in deciding to choose different flavours, if they have such a sensitive palette to 'need' a different flavour in the first place
        • pods need to be taken out and put in the bin every time, so less convenient

        Etc, etc, etc

        • Wow, you have totally convinced me that my previous points are all completely wrong…

Is that the response you were hoping for? Or perhaps you could just admit that different products suit different buyers.. But thanks for coming back to post your retort

  • cheaper deal at Bing Lee for anyone that is interested in this or other models http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/205892

    • Even cheaper there if you use EBAY10 in the checkout
