2x 100GB of 4G Telstra Mobile Data for $104 (Requires Sending SMSs)

4022

Edit: looks like transferring of credit from MBB using 1258888 has NOT been disabled but I am leaving the deal marked as expired as some people are reporting trouble.

Want to get some serious 4g data for use in your dual-sim chinese android devices? Want to stop paying landline fees for ADSL? Don't mind expending a bit of elbow grease? Well, this is for you.

Telstra has a very convoluted set of offers and they have made it hard for their customers to understand the best way of using their offers. I have selected just one specific scenario here. There is a lot more information around for other tricks, if this whets your appetite.

OK, here are the steps. This works at the moment, no idea how long it will last:

  1. Buy two telstra SIMs for $2 each and activate them as Mobile Broadband SIMs. (Alternatively, Telstra livechat can switch a starter pack across for you if you prefer, and you will keep the $30 credit I believe)

  2. Purchase a $50 recharge for each SIM. You now have 12 months' validity on 5Gb of data.

  3. Each day for the next four days, do the following ten times from each Mobile Broadband SIM. You can either put the SIMs in a normal phone, or your MBB device may let you send SMSs via its web interface.

- SMS 1258888 with the word 'transfer'
- enter the phone number of the other MBB SIM
- select $1
- press '1' to confirm

After this, you will have an additional 20Gb of data on each SIM, giving you a total of 25Gb on each. The $50 credit on each is now reduced to $40 (as the 40 transfers cost $0.25, or $10 in total, in each direction).

  1. Do the same as step 3, but as you have $40 instead of $50 credit, you will only get 32 transfers in each direction, yielding an additional 16Gb on each SIM, bringing the total to 5+20+16=41Gb.

  2. Rinse and repeat. Eventually you will run out of credit, and each SIM will have a touch over 100Gb credit.

Remember you will only have 12 months to use it up!

Variations:
- use $140 top-up instead of $50, which will give you 280Gb on each SIM, plus a 2 year expiry.
- if you don't need 100Gb on each SIM, use the 1258888 method to transfer excess funds back to your mobile prepaid account and spend the money on the android play store.
- use something like iMacro for Chrome to help automate the SMS sending
- use something like Tasker on android with this to automatically send SMSs back to the other device.

Just tried and still working :)

OMG, i got 5 Telstra Prepaid Service now (3 new number because of this deal) used $17.50 and got 34.XXGB Data (supposed to be 35gb but its not full 500mb every time, so after 70 times it got almost 1gb less)

  • +2

Beware for those using $30 or under recharge

    1. The data expiry is 30 days only and won't be extended even the main balance extends for 3 days every creditme2u transfer

For those still want to try

    1. You can do the glitch first on a $2 sim or get a blank FREE sim from store, transfer credit on it to see if it works.. and you can do the $50 recharge AFTER and extends the expiry for 1 year

    2. if you got few recharge voucher under $50, you can call and ask nicely and they may merge them for you. I got 2x$15 + 1x$20 and the staff do a $50 manually recharge for me.

    • How do you test it? the $2 sim doesnt come with any credit, right? how can you get $1 credit?

      • creditme2u. you need $1.25 credit anyway. you can buy small amounts on ebay

        • Ta. Good to know

  • This.

This was truly an epic thread.
It provided much entertainment in a lazy Sunday.

Congrats to those that scored the deal.

Condolences for those that felt betrayed.

IMHO the perfect compromise would have been to post to the forums here and let it take its course but….even I can't say the allure of 300+ votes isn't tempting. Lol

I wonder how much extra money telstra made this weekend. :)

    • contribute $92 to them

    • Telstra is having 1st world problems -

"We made millions of extras dollars, many new customers and doesn't cost us anything - but it wasn't what we intended. We better cancel it so no one is happy. Ahhh… That's better."

  • +1

Just a tip: Buy a $50 recharge at Coles for -10% with the sim pack. Sim pack also only $1 currently. Totals $92, saving of $12.

    • Yup, that's what I did. :-) And then, because I'm afraid there's a time limit on this deal, I grabbed a couple HN half price mobile starter packs, and transferred 10x each one of those into my two "main" SIMs. In 5.5 hours, repeat. Bam, for two days effort, it'll be around ~60gb total on the main SIMs, plus any leftover credits on the starter packs, $150. It'd be nice if the deal lasts longer, but if not, that's still a better deal than I'm currently paying for 4G mobile broadband (as my only Internet access due to where I live), so acceptable to me.

  • Do not work for me! :(

    • Be more descriptive please…

      • "This service is not available"

  • Still weird that it works for some and some not, either many are just imitating the genuine buyers or it justdoes not work.. If only someone could upload a screen shot, that would be most helpful.

    • -6

Pssst it still works. I did say earlier it didnt just to throw people off.

      • it asks me to type a 12 digit number…

  • doesnt work for me said service unavailable.

    For me, following 'hihi's recommendations:

Want to get 2 Nano sims for kids Ipads -

    2 x $2 Pre-paid Nano sim starter kits
2 x $30 Telstra Pre-paid sim starter kit for Tablets ($15 at HN)

Register Nano sims as Data (Mobile Broadband)
Register Tablet starter kits sims as Phones using Freedom plan
From the first Starter kit, 'Transfer' (SMS 1258888) $1 to first nano sim. Repeat 10 times until exhausted (24hr limit)
Repeat for the 2nd pair of Starter kit and Nano sim.
From the first nano sim, 'Transfer' $1 x 10 to 2nd nano sim.
Repeat same transfer ($1 x 10) from the 2nd nano sim to the first nano sim.
At this point, all the sim cards have exhausted their daily limit ($10)
Should now have ~10GB on each nano sim, and $17.50 credit left on each starter sim
Credit expiry on the nano sims is only a few days. Will repeat these 4 x 10 transfer again tomorrow. From what I understand, this should also extend the nano sim expiry time slightly (a day??).

If this all works out over the next few days, will purchase $50 recharge for each nano sim, increasing the expiry to 365 days.

Also, used Pushbullet on Android to allow sending of SMS's through Chrome browser. Easily sped up the process heaps (not as automated as Tasker etc)

So for $34, I have 20GB of data and still have $55 of credit remaining, so even if it all goes bad, I still should be able to use the credit for Google Play.

    • +2

if you want to bypass the $10 limit, just transfer the Freedom plan sims using m.telstra.com, there is an option to creditme2u, just wait for 2 mins and press refresh the page :) so it should take about 48 mins to transfer $24+$6 fee. The nano sim expiry time wont extend if you transfer on the same day but next day it will extend 1 day :)

      • +1

Right. Shall do. That 2 min gap is annoying, so didnt go back to trying it. Cheers!

  • For those that are keen at 12:01am tonight you will be able to transfer again.

    • or maybe not, seems like they disabled mbb cm2u

      • You ain't doing it right. I did it 5 mins ago

        • Im not doing it at all was just reading what other people wrote :)

  • Still works, just tried it out of curiosity as I already have a Telstra Data Sim & a bunch of $30 Prepaid Starter Kit from the $1 Woolies deal.

    How to do it:
    1. Activate $30 Starter Kit
    2. Transfer $10 using #1001604xxxxxxxx[Data SIM Prepaid No]1# You can save it as a contact to make it easier. Now I have $17.50 credit remaining
    3. Transfer the rest using m.telstra.com. You can only transfer 3x every 2 minutes I think. But there's no limit to how much you can transfer. You should get about 12GB for each $30 starter Kit
    4. Now from your Data SIM, transfer back $10 to any of your prepaid SIM using the SMS method (IT STILL WORKS. Don't use the #100# method or the m.telstra.com as they don't work for data SIM). You can only do this once every 24 hours.
    5. Using the prepaid SIM with the $10, transfer it back with m.telstra.com to your Data SIM, giving you an extra 4GB on your data SIM
    6. Lock-in the data you have accumulated for 1 year with $50 recharge voucher, giving you an extra 5GB. You have 3 days to do so before this data expires.

Using 2x $30 Prepaid SIM should get you 33GB, and 3x $30 will get you 45GB.

Rinse and repeat step 4 and 5 every day as long as Telstra doesn't disable this option. At the very least you get 33-45GB, anything extra (4GB/day) can be regarded as bonus.

    • Then you only get a third of the amount this deal States

      • It's a safer method to ensure you at least get a decent amount of data in case telstra closes this loophole anytime soon. If they don't, you'll still end up with more than 100GB credit by transferring it back and forth every day. The method in the OP still works, but if they shut it down on monday you'll end up spending $100 for about 20GB of data.

    • just transfer $1 for $30 starter kits using m.telstra.com until you run out of credit. :) and same as the data sim just $1 you will get more gb. The bonus of transferring $10 just 1gb i think but for $1 it gives you 500mb

      • Oops yes i do mean transferring $1 each time, cheers :)

  • COnfirmed. 10.05 PM Still working fine.

    • yep still working

  • I don't get it (but would really like to). If I activate 2 SIMs as mobile broadband and put $50 on one and select the 5gb/365 day expiry, haven't I then just spent my $50 credit? with no $ left to transfer?

    • Nope, it gives you 5gb internet and $50 credit on your account for 1 $50 recharge

      • Thanks!

  • -1

Whats the maximum data we can have?? 100GB?? 200GB?? 500GB?? 1TB??

  • is anyone having issues using the #10016[insertmobilenumber]1# method? I've tried it on a windows mobile and an iphone and no workee :(

    • The #100# CreditMe2U method is not available on the data pass offer - that's what makes the text message method so lucrative (since there was no way to do a CM2U out of the data pass prior to it [without contacting support and relying on luck]).

      • I'm talking getting the dollars onto the data card

  • Just did another 10 lots each way, still works!

Edit: got the error code "this service is not available" or something when I tried an 11th time, this is probably when others are getting the error.

    • i randomly got it in the middle of xfers so i just kept trying and it worked the next time

      • Also had that happen once or twice, usually when I accidentally sent a message too soon though.

  • just completed 10x transferred in between 2 numbers.

  • late to the party

So I'm guessing using creditme2u on m.telstra.com with data pass offer (on $30 sim pack) doesn't work. I can't get it to. The only way that works is 1258888, am i correct?

I activated both as data passes, I should still be ok, yeah?

  • I still got 10x transferable, supposedly should transfer 1->2->3->4->5->1

Missed one service by mistake in the morning, and got 1 odd out. Anyone also got one service need to exchange?

    I will send u one dollar first, and u send me back… Repeat $1 x 10 times

    • YES…I'm off to Coles in a few hours (dentist first) to buy 1 sim and 1 $50 recharge

  • Hi guys, a question: I've got a starter $30, if I chat to telstra they can activate as mobile broadband and then I just top up $20?

    • Nah u need to have recharged $50 to get the bonuses of $50 recharges. Don't bother recharging, just follow the steps. Your expiry will just be shorter.

      • If you recharge with $50, does the credit/data extend to 365 days?

        • Yes

  • THANKS

  • Could this be done with three cards

  • Hi guys,

OP said "Buy two telstra SIMs for $2 each… and you will keep the $30 credit" Is this correct? If so, what's the difference between $2 starter pack and $30 starter pack?

    Thanks.

    • +1

"(Alternatively, Telstra livechat can switch a starter pack across for you if you prefer, and you will keep the $30 credit I believe)"

      starter pack

So, your sim card needs to be activated as MBB.

If you have a starter pack, chances are you did not activate it as MBB, but rather as a normal phone plan. Call livechat to change it from a phone plan (which has $30 credit because you bought a $30 starter pack) to a MBB.

If, however, you started with a $2 blank card, with the intention of doing the above, you probably already activated it as a MBB.

      Did that clear things up?

      • If you've got a $30 Starter Pack (I got a few from last weeks cashback thing), you can simply choose Mobile Broadband during the activation process (if you haven't already activated them of course, as kwchaz said above).

It seems like a hybrid of a $50 recharge on one of the $30 SIM (Sim 1) and a $140 recharge on the other $30 SIM (Sim 2) would end up with a nice blend if you're only likely to use 1 SIM at a time… charge them both up with transfers and then put the $140 recharged SIM (which has a 2 year life) in the drawer until the first SIM is all used up…

      • Yep thanks. I also didn't realise that with $50 recharge you get $50 credit (which will be used to do the transfers) as well as the 5G data.

  • +1

Doesn't this** statement essentially mean the deal is over?

**Edit: looks like transferring of credit from MBB using 1258888 has been disabled.

    • Yes, but that statement is incorrect. It has not been disabled

      • Yes I will fix the edit with another edit

  • Ok I just finished my 3gb data pass for my $30 starter kit, but it has $30 credit remaining, can I transfer those $1 each time to s new sim and get 100gb?

    • Sort of.
Every transfer of $1 you do, the receiver gets $1 + 500MB, at a cost of $1.25 ($1+$0.25 fee) to you. You can do this up to 10 times a day for a total cost of $12.50, resulting in 5GB of data and $10 for the receiver. You then send this back from the receiving sim, resulting in $8+4GB of data sent back, at a cost of the $10 credit.

  • doing this now. think its still working

  • but im not sure if its correct.
ive transferred 10 times each way on each sim

and when I check the balance its

    $47.50
    data remaining 9.91GB

    Bonuss
    data 9.883GB

    on each sim

    is this correct?

    • +1

Yes. 25 C charge per transfer. 500 mb

      • thanks

so it will take couple of weeks to accumulate the 100gb for each simcard?

        • ~20 days

  • +3

Alright, for the visual among us I've made a simple Excel spreadsheet. It assumes you have 2 x $30 Prepaid Starter Kits that have been activated as Mobile Broadband and haven't been topped up.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1UPmyrmrTVkLWJMMDd4ZXloVlk…

(Be aware if you edit it in place using Google it takes a second or two when calculating changes)

You can edit the Starting Credit (eg, to $50 for those on $2 SIMS with $50 topup) and Starting Data (again, 5000MB for those with the $50 topup) and it will adjust all of the following days.

Let me know if this is helpful!

    • oh cool.

yea I used your spread sheet. works well.

so now we have to do it for 12 days?

      not the 4 days?

      • No mate, I just went out to 12 days as that is where a $30 one would run out of cash, you can copy and paste each block for additional days if you want to see how many days it would take you in total to run out of credit transfers.

        • God I'm still a tad confused, so buy 2x$2 sim and use one to recharge anything up to $50 and the other one which totals $100, then start the transfers to each one up to 5 times a day which is 500mb each which charges 25c each+ $1?

How about buying 2x$10 recharges which gives 1gb for 3days? If I have 2 sims can it be transferred? Also does it matter what plan u are on, data pass?

    • Thanks kudoz, yes, helpful indeed. So I'm absolutely clear though, I would still need to recharge $50 on each sim after I've done the above in order that the data allowance would last a year, correct?

      • Yes mate, a $50 recharge before or after you've been doing the above will mean the credit lasts for a year… (I'm thinking before might be safer in case the loophole is fixed…)

If you're topping up with the $50 beforehand, change the figures in the spreadsheet to get an idea of how many days of swapping it will take you to exhaust the extra credit (hint, it will take quite a while, lol!)

I'd suggest to people maybe to buy Tasker for Android as in the original post.

        • Thank you

    • +1

      No fancy spread sheet needed…
      $30 / $0.25 = 120
      120 / 10 = 12.

$30 = credit amount (replace this)
      $0.25 = cost per 500MB
      10 = amount per day.

This will give you an estimate to the exact day, though if you'd like to be more fancy you can subtract $1 from starting credit for an exact figure.

      • +2

lol true… but some of us like a more explicit visual than a string of numbers ;)

Though it's all for naught now… I should have spent more time doing the transfers than planning and making a spreadsheet! haha

  • Do u need a phone with dual sim or can u do it using just 2 phones

    • Either, it doesn't matter… might actually be easier using 2 phones so you don't mix things up

  • Is this still working if I start the game today?

    • Maybe not. I tried an hour ago and it didn't work…got reply SMS "credit can only be transfer to Telstra pre paid Plus customers" .

      • pre paid plus is the wrong plan?

  • working here.

sending the sms to 1258888 confused me, but it's similar to using #100#, the sms "conversation" is automagic!

  • Whats a good modem to use on these 4G cards?

  • Seems like a problem with the 2nd sim plan.

Anyone else got just 1 sim, 1 $50, want 100GB ? Will swap$10/ day. PM me.

Thank the OP for ruining this for everyone else

        • -1

OK, you knew it was going to be canned…I thought Telstra might let it run as they were capturing new sign ups, via social media, from a different demographic. Exactly what smart organizations spend a lot striving to do.I was wrong.

    • lol, those Whirlpool chaps are gonna be pissed :P

    • Is it 125 8888 or all of it that will be shutdown?

      • Most likely transferring to a MBB.

        • If they're going to shut it down, they should shut down the 125 8888 from MBB sim, that way they still get the benefit of people recharging phone credit and transferring to MBB to get extra data. They'll still make money off both the initial recharge & the creditme2u 25c fee.
