Even more exciting than that was having to buy a separate game and play through the whole thing to get the otherwise unobtainable Pokemon. (for example Pokemon Ranger, Pokemon Channel)
Sounds like more fun than you can poke a stick at.
There are still version exclusives and there are still legendaries you catch that take hundreds of dusk balls to catch.
It's funny you say that because I'm actually playing Pokemon Ranger now to get Manaphy! And yeah, I played Channel last year to get myself a Jirachi :)
Event Pokemon have always been a thing though, so those good old days still exist.
I remember being like 14-15 and waiting inline with 8 yr olds to get my mew for pokemon blue.
Well nothing really happened to them…even the original games over 10 years ago still had downloadable rare Pokemon but you had to attend rare hotspot events and plug your game boy to get them, they were massive in Japan and America for Pokemon like Mew, Jirachi and Deoxys.
Got that Mew on my red at one of these events. Guarded that cartridge with my life.

@endlless: Yea, was at Warringah mall, 1999 or 2000. Got to play Pokemon TCG for the first time as well.
I got a mew with a gameshark (not all of us lived near places that had the pokemon events) and then did the duplicating bug and gave one to people everywhere I went. I remember a few years later, some guy showed me his mew in pokemon gold/silver at a soccer game, had my name as the original trainer.
Ah the duplicate glitch. Had 2 full boxes worth of duplicated Laprases cause I wanted more rare candies to evolve my Larvitar.
A level 17 pokemon at end game with final evolution at level 55, why you do this Gamefreak!

They have made it easier to catch pokemon as well. They must have reduced the catch rate as the legendaries were so easy to catch in pokemon x and y. Was much more frustrating and rewarding in the days of pokemon blue and red where you had to get through all your balls to nab one.
Pokemon have been given out like this since Gen 1. This is how Mew was given to people.

I went to ebgames Highpoint. they said you have to buy a box of pm cards to get this deal and also they were sold out already.
They were lying to you, no purchase is needed. They probably just ran out
Yeah, all the free pokemon are pretty clearly not a buy in deal, if they say this is the case, call them out on it and say you will call your boss. The idea is to get you into the store, its not to make u buy something.

That's probably because that EB gave more than one per customer. I got 12 cards from the North Sydney EB.

Went to Eb games swanston street. Lady at the Nintendo area instantly said as I was going up the stairs they're sold out. This feels like the diancie codes again.
Just came back from EB games in Broadmeadows and they said you have to purchase the game to receive it so I'm pretty annoyed about that…
edit After seeing peoples comments on EBgames Australia facebook page they replied and confirmed it was free and you do not have to purchase anything to get the code and they will contact stores who are saying you do need to buy something. Went back to Broadmeadows 15minutes after I came home and got my code! :)

100% certain. Just ask for the free Rayquaza code, I've been able to do it at a few EB Games' in Adelaide.
EB Games facebook page just confirmed that the code is free and you do not have to purchase anything, if the staff in ebgames say you have to purchase something tell them to ring and confirm because they are wrong.
