Lastpass Mobile Apps Free (Offers IAP)

520

Lastpass is now free on mobile devices.

It previously cost $12/year but has now removed that fee and made it into an in-app purchase for multi-platform syncing.

For example, if you sign up on an android devices, it will sync to other android devices but not ios devices. If you sign up on an ios device, it will sync to other ios devices.

Whatever device users get started on, they can use LastPass on that device and any others of the same device type — desktops, smartphones or tablets — for free

They did have a security breach recently, but hopefully that has made them even more cautious and still regarded as one of the best password managers.

From what I understand is that the app had cost $12/yr to use. It's now free to use but limited to sync with only one platform.

Used Lastpass but changed to SafeInCloud. Syncs with your existing cloud service (Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive), and works on almost every OS. The Android app was around $6, but just discovered that they made a free Android app with IAP, so you can look up passwords for free, but can't use in-app-browser and some other stuff.

Never heard of it. What is the user interface like? I find Lastpass difficult at times.

      • Try Norton ID safe. I have tried couple of others but like norton better. It's free as well and I don't believe it has any in app purchases (not that i know of anyway)

        • +1

I swore off Norton years ago. I plan to continue doing so.

        • @stephendt: they didn't have the app years ago. It's same as people not liking windows ME and not ever using windows again.

I use Lastpass but stopped paying for it because of its terrible UI. It hasn't improved in years, and they ignore suggestions. Still on the lookout for something nicer, maybe 1password?

    • thanks for the tip, might give that one a go..

Keepass doesnt work (well) on macs and Lastpass requires on going $ (yes its stuff all, but if this works then a one off $ works for me)

They had a breach, but the hackers only got the main email address of lastpass accounts, and not passwords. I think thats what I read. The solution was to change your Lastpass email address. But the safest way is always not to store passwords on your computer/ device, or in the cloud. But remembering 100+ sites is impossible for me, hopefully they'll do away with usernames & passwords soon. One promising development is The SQRL (Secure Quick Reliable Login) system (pronounced “squirrel”), no usernames and passwords.

If you use ANYTHING to store passwords, you really should have two-factor authentication enabled. If they get your email+password combo, they still can't get in. Lastpass offers multiple 2FA options, but the easiest is probably Google Authenticator on your phone.

Actually they gained access to some heavily encrypted Master passwords.
Changing your master password was the solution.

      • From their recent blog "Update: June 16, 2015 @ 4:10 PM EST … Was my master password exposed?
        No,"

        • +3

Correct, the master password was not exposed.. but an encrypted version of your master password was potentially snaffled.
With some serious processing power, it will be possible for the Master password to be exposed.
However, changing the Master Password (thereby initiating a re-encrytion of your passwords) will ensure that your passwords remain safe.

          @scubacoles:

Like I said in my first comment "I think thats what I read". I wasn't sure. However, I checked the blog, and it is virtually impossible to crack the passwords encryption. Although the "bad guys" could try and guess the password and "use your per-user-salt and authentication hash to determine if their guess was correct".

But yeah, changing the password is the sensible thing to do.

Personally I use this site to generate passwords https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

And if anyone is interested in online security this is the best site I've ever seen to understand the issues https://www.privacytools.io

  • This would be a life saver.. Thank you so much OP

"security breach" is overstating it somewhat.

    • +4

Given the value of the information I would say that it was a significant breach. Their investigation revealed that LastPass account email addresses, password reminders, server per user salts, and authentication hashes were compromised.

  • They were breached.
What have they done since to tighten security?
Do they have the resources to tighten the security sufficiently?

If you want a password management system that syncs from your PC and Android I recommend Keepass, Keepass2Android and Dropbox. You store your password file on your Dropbox and both KP apps can tap into it wherever you open the app and/or update your password file.

      (+) for open-source apps!

I'm in the same boat and use KeepassDroid in mobile devices. It may not be as convenient as an online password manager but definitely gives me more peace of mind.

  • Glad I didn't buy it when my trial ran out a week or 2 ago.

  • +11

This is useless if you already had a desktop lastpass account, as you will still have to buy, to integrate between desktop and Android and/or iOS.

    • +2

Agreed. It's just a minor change to the status quo.
Instead of the free version defaulting to Desktop/Laptop, it now defaults to the device ecosystem that you register on.
I've been a paid up subscriber for a few years now. Easily worth the $1/month in my opinion.

  • Used to use Skywallet but was really buggy. Now using Keeper and haven't looked back.

  • Overambitious access required: Why does LastPass need access to your microphone and all your files/photos?

  • How much is this normally.

    • +1

It was previously $12/year to get mobile device support

    • Have a look in the post. It's in the second sentence.

      • I didn't ask how much it was previously.

Whatever device users get started on, they can use LastPass on that device and any others of the same device type — desktops, smartphones or tablets — for free

This has always been free on desktops so no change there. In-app purchase of LastPass Premium has been around for a while and I don't really see much value in android - android syncing. YMMV.

Free syncing between desktop and your mobile device? That would be a bargain.

  • Nothing for existing customers I assume?

    • +1

Nothing has really changed, so no.

  • How is this different to iCloud Keychain ?

    • +6

It doesn't restrict you to devices with an apple logo on it.

  • lol Oh well I've still got 9mths to go. May as well work on the wife having a child in that time…
