  • Because it's instant hot water, does it use more electricity to heat the same amount of water when compared to storage hot water?

    27kW lol

      113 amps!!
Electrical wiring and associated changes in your house will cost more than this unit!

  • It will need a dedicated electrical circuit with bigger size wiring and dedicated circuit breaker, but if it can really deliver the instant and constant hot water flow of 6 gallons/minute (22 l/m) you will not need to keep hot water stored all the time (hot water system tank) for when it is needed. That would be a big saving.

Wouldn't it need to be Australian standards approved to be installed anyway? So any electrician won't install it.

    • So any electrician won't install it

Neither will the plumber, as it doesn't carry water approval either.

Oh, and the voltage is wrong, and the plumbing fittings have wrong threads.

Most houses would only have about an 80A mains supply anyway……
good luck getting it installed :)

A quick read of a review (see below) revealed that it is 3x 9kW heat elements, not actually 27kW at once.

The manufacturer requires three 40 amp double pole breakers for this water heater. Having said that, the true power consumption is quite low. To explain, I will give you my observations while the unit was in use. The unit has three 9 KW heaters. All the heaters do not operate at once. The first heater begins to modulate at low flow rates. If the flow increases and the first heater has reached maximum voltage then the second heater has voltage applied to maintain setpoint temperature. If the flow increases further then heater number three begins to operate as well. During my tests I never saw all elements on at the same time. As an example: a kitchen faucet, bath vanity, bath shower and a washing machine filling resulted in one element at full power and the second element was at half power. This was with the incoming water temperature was at 70 degrees F. Lower incoming water temperatures does degrade the efficiency of this unit.
Remember this heater does not use any power until a faucet, shower ect. is opened for hot water. My heater has been in operation for two years with zero issues. In summary, if I needed a water heater today I would purchase the exact same thing

instant heater will need to run on peak rates. whereas the storage heater can run on night rates. what would the cost be to heat up 400L of water?

  • +1

based on the comments, It actually requires 3 x 40 amp breakers, as it works by gradually turning on one of 3 x 9kw elements , each coming on successively as the flow rate increases ( the unit modulates the elements providing the correct amount of heat).
This is a huge unit and would only be needed for the most demanding of houses, there are much smaller capacities available.

As above though it's basically unsuitable for pretty much everyone in Australia due to the max load it could draw ;-)

    edit: snap :-)

  • Most of my hot water usage occurs at peak times. Kids having showers etc..ill stick with my 400l off-peak heater and when it dies, instant gas.

  • The 13KW ECO11 version might be enough for some people. This is tempting to replace my aging electric system.

  • Why is a unit sold for use in the USA 240 volts?

    • Why is a unit sold for use in the USA 240 volts?

Because the USA power supply is 120/240VAC 60Hz.

    • Houses there do have 240 outlets.. common for washing machines etc.

      • I just learned something new.

And according to Wikipedia, Australia changed our voltage to 230 volts in year 2000.

        • Not everywhere.

  • To get a rough comparison, I actually bought 7x 9kw cheapies to sell overseas, these unit are Less than $100 each. I put one in the shower and one in the kitchen.
My quarterly electric bill dropped from $440 average to under $200, that's 2 people in a unit. We don't have off-peak unfortunately.
I'd imagine the savings drop a little with more people in a house. If you have teenagers then theyll never get out so clearly not a saving in that case, but generally these do pay for themselves in less than 3-6 months.
If I could I'd definitely go solar ..but I can't..

    • With 2 adults only in the house, instantaneous can be the most economical if used correctly.
For those considering gas.. consider that you will have another fixed connection fee on top of your usage. You also may find that your electricity c/kw will increase if you no longer have an all electric house. Do your research if you are looking to save.

No way in the world this is legal to install in Australia.

Fails both Electrical AND water approvals.

Oh, and 240V in America is THREE PHASE.

    Our 3-phase is 415V.
