  • Been wanting one of these. Does it have the necessary bands for all Aussie telcos, specifically Telstra?

    • +2

      2G Network (MHz)850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
      3G Network (MHz)850 / 1900 / 2100
      4G Network (MHz)700 / 800 / 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1800 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600

      • +3

Critically does not have Band 28 700Hz 4G which is used by Telstra/Optus in metro areas.

        I wouldn't pay $850 for a phone in 2015 which doesn't include this.

        • +1

Do Australian stock of this model carry the band 28 700hz 4g?

        • +2

          @minMaxRNG:

          Yes.

          Have a look at oztowers:
          http://oztowers.com/Home/Bands

Look at what your carrier uses in your state and compare that to what the phone you want to buy offers.

          Why 700Mhz 4G is important:
          https://www.telcoantennas.com.au/site/telstra-4g-explained

        • My wife got her S5 from Kogan HK, but it seems to run 4G alright (Sydney metro).

        • I must have missed something but how do you know it doesn't have band 28 700MHz?

        • +1

          @knowskillz:

Read the bands posted by bargain Hunter above or get it direct from the tech specs section of the kogan product page…

          It ain't there.

        • +3

          @plasmapuff:

          he posted

          4G Network (MHz)700 / 800 / 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1800 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600

Looks kinda there to me? Or am I missing something? :X

      • +2

I do not know how to interpret these specifications, I am a casual user, hence why I asked.

        • +3

I'm the same. I really appreciate it every time some one puts in the effort to explain it! Thanks Ozb

  • +26

no storage slot and no removable battery.. what are they thinking ..

    • +5

      Apple.

      • +5

        Why not Nexus?

        • -2

Because would you rather your company sold Nexus phones or Apple phones? I know which I would rather sell!

        • -1

          @jzdhgkd: I think you're missing the point.

        • +1

At least Nexus is priced right for what it offers.
iPhone on the other hand …

        • Nexus over Apple regardless of the price.

        • +1

          @Uncharted:

Nexus 6, in my opinion, is overpriced.

          sub par camera.
priced in the Note 4 territory, without offering anything.
          Over saturated, and unadjustable display.
          Non expandable memory and battery.

      • But pear shaped

  • Wouldn't customs try to charge you gst?

    • Well it's under $1000 AUD, so there would be no GST applicable.

      • +2

The 20% off is paid by eBay/Kogan (Order Total amount is still $1067.98), so the amount you pay is only $854.38. But I think Kogan might still declare the phone value to be above $1,000, which might incur GST.

        • That's exactly my thinking. I bought a note 4 from tgg during last 20% off, and they gave me a receipt without the 20% off. It came out in my favour in that instance, because I claimed GST back.

        • They may declare it as lower…… but if they declared it as the actual value, then they would have to do $1067.98

They actually don't see the discount on their end, they see the full amount.

  • +22

So sad not having the sd slot. I have a note 3 32gb + 64gb sd. this does not look appealing to me at all..

    • +12

same opinion. no sd card slot or removable battery. kills the note for me.

      • +6

I will hold onto my Note 4 until they do.

      • +8

Same here, no MicroSD slot and non-removable battery and lack of IR blaster kill it for me… I'll pass, hope Samsung get their shit together for the Note 6.

        • +3

The lack of IR blaster is a major downfall for me.

Can't they give us the best of everything? The note series should be a no comprise phone.

        • @Ronnnie:

Agreed. If I used the IR blaster on the N4, I'd want it on the N5.

One reason I won't get the OnePlus Two is because of a lack of NFC (coming from a Nexus 5)

        • @rorymeister:

          You actually use that?

Btw I think that LG G Flex 2 deal is a better proposition than the 1+1.

  • +10

Can't believe Samsung crippled their flagship magnum opus.
I'm now looking to get a dual sim note 4 but I have a suspicion they'll be retaining their value fairly well on the secondary market now.

    • +1

Dual sim note 4s are now reasonably priced. People were asking over $800 just 2 weeks ago. Good thing I've waited. They can be had for a little over $600.

    • Seems there is an Apple insider at Samsung Product development.

  • -5

I use to complain about my phone having no SD card slot or removable battery, but then I got use to it. I figured there was no point carrying around 60 GB of data that I rarely use. I bought one of those Sandsik OTG flash drives, so anytime I need to transfer data to my phone I use Microsoft OneDrive or the flash drive. . To solve the battery issue, I bought a 16000 mAh Xiaomi power bank. I rarely use it and it sits in my bag.

I don't know why people are still whinging about phone memory and battery life. Just carry around a big flash drive or an external HDD and a power bank.

    • +13

Why don't you carry a laptop while you're at it?

      • +7

I do. A Dell XPS 13. It fits in my bag. The bag is a new invention.

    • +13
      • Replaceable battery isn't so much about having backup power. It's more so about extending device longevity, since the battery usually depreciates and dies quicker than the rest of the device.
      • 32gb is easily spent when movies and videos are recorded/loaded on the phone. Having space for more is a godsend for people who commute on public transport everyday. Constantly downloading off the cloud costs mobile data, and flash drives aren't handy without a computer in between.
    • +1

try travelling around with a power bank in your pocket charging your phone and taking pics. Its difficult. Thats how come for holidays i always carry a pre-charged extra battery to swap over. some charging cases are also good though. :)

      • +1

carry a lumia on holidays :p

    • +4

I'm with tendollar, except for his last sentence.

I too used to be a huge fan of removable batteries and micro SD slots. That was when phones were 16GB and didn't last all day. Now, my phone has 64GB which is more than enough for my use and lasts me a full day, unless I'm on holiday taking lots of pics which is when I carry my flat xiaomi 5000mAh power bank which easily sits in my pocket next to my phone.

So now I don't mind not having a removable battery or micro SD slot. I would have sold the phone before the battery degrades too much so longevity isn't too big a concern.

But I can certainly understand why some people would want both a micro SD slot and removable battery. Unfortunately a lot of those people seem unable to accept that a huge number of people really don't mind not having either feature, as demonstrated by how popular the S6 is.

      • According to Samsung's mobile statistics in 2014, the average Samsung user uses about 24 GB of storage on their phone.

    • I was the first purchaser for that gold, looks like 6 more followed :)

  • +19

Advice if you get one, DO NOT INSERT THE PEN BACKWARDS.

    http://9to5google.com/2015/08/25/explained-heres-exactly-wha…

  • +5

first it was bendgate by apple, now samsung invents pengate. nevertheless, this is a great phone despite the non removable battery and no expandable storage

    • -2

I think you have to be a real idiot to insert the pen backwards.

      • +2

You never know what you can do under the cover of darkness..sh*t happens!

        • +3

Yep, I put the "pen" in the back once when it was dark. Shit happens indeed.

        • -2

You have a phone with a display that emits light and can easily feel your way to the tip of the pen. In what situation would you be holding the pen backwards such that if you wanted to put it in you would do it backwards?

        • +1

@minMaxRNG: I must say, having had multiple Notes and devices with pens, I've never ever attempted to insert the pen backwards.

That said, Samsung should have made it more resilient to user error. It's not a big deal for me at all, but parents who buy it might want to make sure their kids learn the correct way to insert the pen!

        • @hamwhisperer:

Yep, I put the "pen" in the back once when it was dark. Shit happens indeed.

          Bugger

      • It's those idiot children you've got to watch out for

    • Pen15gate

      • -1

I see what you did there.

  • +1

With 4gb ram still refreshes apps, hopeless Samsung.

  • Why not wait a little longer if you're after a Samsung device? The price goes down rather quickly anyway. Just comparing S6 prices now to how much they were few months ago is crazy.

  • +3
    • -2

SUFFERS FROM IGNORAMUSES WITH BIG POCKETS!

Those people need to read the manual instead. Talk about dumb

      • +4

No shit you shouldn't insert the pen the wrong way.

The fact of the matter is, the pen is designed in such a way, that you could easily insert it the wrong way, and you won't know it until it's too late. There's no resistance, nothing until it clicks in. That's a design flaw plain and simple.

And Samsung's response is laughable. Guess you better not ever hand the Note5 to someone who hasn't read the manual, just in case they insert the pen the wrong way…

        • +7

They are taking the 'Let's copy Apple' a little too seriously. First, no removable battery and no micro SD slot and now "You are inserting it wrong" statements similar to Jobs' "You are holding it wrong".

        • @sridhar:

I applaud you Sir for quoting Steve Jobs in this context, this is gold!

        • -3

          @sridhar:

Dear Samsung, You are building it wrong. You are selling it wrong. You are supporting it wrong. And if you think I'm buying it, guess what? Bzzzt. WRONG!

To be honest this just gives me the extra push not to buy from a company that can't build washing machines that don't start fires, can't handle their recall, can't give rough estimates of cost to fix a known problem caused by the user (like a broken charge port….no you send it in, and they "evaluate" it aka say yep it's the charge port and charge you money that "comes off" the cost of the repair). If I wanted to spend big on inferior crippled product and blamed for not using it right I would as pointed out already be an Apple customer.

          http://www.samsung.com/au/washingmachinerecall/?gclid=CIHW9N…

        • @syousef:

          I think you're lost…

          You're on ozbargain, not Samsung.

        • -1

          @inose:

I think you're lost. We're discussing a Samsung product on Ozbargain. Perhaps the writing style is lost on you.

        • @syousef:

          Lol

No I'm pretty sure that letter's for Samsung, not ozbargain.

        • @inose:

Mate I wouldn't send it to Samsung. It'd likely never get read and if it was it would be filed in the recycle bin. They certainly never bothered to address any of my complaints in a way that made me feel they mattered.

        • @syousef:

Try their Facebook. Companies always respond on that, including them.

        • @inose:

Mate I tried everything. My daughter…3 at the time tried to put a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 on charge and pluged the micro USB backwards stuffing the port. I knew what was wrong but couldn't get an answer on a rough estimate to fix. They could only give me a price after assessing it which cost $50 or something and which supposedly came off the cost of the final repair. They wanted me to write a blank check. It took an hour with Samsung support and another hour on hold with some other local NSW support (not sure if 1st was offshore, second in Australia or what the deal was). Anyway i had to ring 2 lines and after being on hold for an hour with the second line I just gave up and went to the Samsung experience store where I was treated like I had leprosy for wanting to do anything like ask a question. If you weren't buying new they wanted you to drop the thing off and leave quick smart. The soup Nazis of the repair world.

Anyway I responded to their surveys, complained by email and on Facebook. Nothing but more idiotic customer satisfaction surveys. They never got back to me.

I ended up voiding the warranty, obtaining the part from Ebay and doing the repair myself.

Only worse experience I've ever had is Nikon when they use to outsource their service.

Samsung want to be more like Apple. Congratulations. I will avoid Samsung in future the way I avoid Apple now. This is from a family with 3 Samsung phones and 3 tablets too. They've taken a direction I'm not interested in.

  • -1

    What, only 32GB? Seriously?

  • +1

If you insert it the wrong way and manage to get it out.. well the phone apparently does not detect it when you insert it next or take it out..#nofun!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hehbSG3h3wU

    • when i was reading about this i thought it was as is the spen goes in the right way tip first but rotated around so the button is on the bottom not on top…. didnt realise it was talking about ass first.

well my beloved note 2 just got some more love….. i jsut cant not understand how this was not looked into when the note 4 had a fool proof design as shown.

      • It looks like, somewhere down the line, someone was cutting corners!

  • Can anybody confirm if kogan provides invoice with the original price. I mean $1067 for this item. Do they include GST for this purchase?

    Thanks

    • No gst as its grey stock

    • +1

They won't provide you an invoice and it doesn't include GST as it's a grey import.

I know where you are exactly coming from. I think you shouldn't risk as chances are very high that they will declare the full price (before discount) to customs and it then would incur GST

    • +1

I bought a Note 4 last time from the Goods Guys through their ebay store when they had 20% off. The receipt had the full amount on it. No indication of a discount, but when I check the transaction in my Paypal account, it did show that $788(total cost) was paid to the Good Guys; in the description it did show the coupon code was applied.

  • +2

The Note 5 is so bad I'm not even considering it. I am normally trying to get it day one. I've bought every Note in the first week of release and this release has been ridiculous. Only 32GB available in Australia and no silver version. No battery or SD Card slot I can somewhat understand in an nonunderstanding way. But no IR Blaster is a slap in the face and cannot be defended in any way, shape or form.

Coupled with the S6 internals not a true Note internal I place the worth of the Note 5 in the $600 mark if I am being generous.

It's time to look at buying something apart from Note. Samsung has failed so hard…

    • +1

But no IR Blaster is a slap in the face and cannot be defended in any way, shape or form.

None of my friends use the IR blaster seriously. Not a single one. Using a physical remote is so much quicker. It's always on and you can feel it in the dark.

      Samsung has failed so hard…

I bet it'll still sell very well. Your needs are different to the general public.

    • I agree about them using the same internals as the S6, but for me personally I don't mind about the removal battery, IR blaster or sd card. So when this phone goes down in price I'll pick it up as a replacement for my note 3.

For me the phone is good very good, it's just got features removed that you like so for you the phone is not good.

  • Sales of the S6 are absolutely shithouse and now they've shot themselves in the other foot with the Note 5 rubbish they're trying to pass off as a flagship device… http://www.zdnet.com/article/why-samsung-galaxy-s6-sales-suc…

I too have had all 4 generations of the Note and will not be getting the 5th. What do they want me to do with my 128GB ozb microSD? Swallow it?

Let's see if they come out with a Note 5S lol…

  • +4

The OP should also mention that there is a chance that you will have to pay $155.35 in duties & taxes for importing it.

The company will invoice you for the full amount, because to them they receive the full amount. This would make their accounting books balance. It just depends on if they are a "honest" or "dishonest" company and what they write on the Customs Declaration.

    Basically the charges are followed:
    $48.85 - Documentary Import Declaration
    $106.80 - GST

Note: They may also add the postage into the GST calculations (although it was free postage, but the Govt doesn't see it like that), so add some more on top for the GST on Postage if you get slapped with it.

    Basically NOT WORTH IT!

You can get several versions from T-Dimension for around $940-950 (free shipping to Aus)
    http://www.t-dimension.com/revamp/-c-0/samsung-galaxy-note-5…
You get better warranty for the same price. If you need to claim warranty you don't need to pay 1 cent to shipping it back, where as Kogan you need to pay for return shipping.

You are buying from a HK company if you go with T-Dimension, but then again you will be buying from Kogan HK (you will see on your receipt that it says KOGAN HK).

    • I think you're right. I also don't see any incentive for them to be "dishonest" in this case. Kogan are selling the phone for $1067.98, I don't see why they would write anything different on the customs declaration.

    • -3

      Stay away from T Dimension!

i had a very bad experience with T Dimension on ebay just yesterday. I was purchasing a Samsung Note 4 dual Sim for about $610. Then they repriced it higher and gave me the following explanation. I suggest if it's too good to be true it is. The worst part is that I can't even give them negative feedback until after 7 days given they are a superstar ebay seller. I suspect my money will be refunded within 7 days and then i won't be able to give feedback.

      New message from: t-dimension2 (43,134)
      Hi buyer,
We are sorry that this item is the last stock, warehouse QC team found minor defect on the item. We need to return it to original manufacturer. They cannot provide the replacement’s restocking time. We can’t fulfill your order at this moment. We do not want to hold your order. We will cancel your order and arrange full refund to you first.

Once there is restock from supplier, we can offer the original price to you.

Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience caused.
      Thank you for your understanding.
      Thanks
      T-dimension

      • Lol, thats classified as a "VERY" bad experience… Just because they didn't give you the item.

Go with Kogan then… they may not do that, but from many reports on Whirlpool, Warranty claims take 1-3 months. Now that's what I call a "VERY" bad experience.

I've sent back over 3 phones under warranty to T-Dimension:
        1. Take Video of Issue, Post to Youtube, Send them the Video and request for Warranty
        2. They give you Fedex Account Number and you get Fedex to pickup the phone
        3. 2 Weeks later receive a new one.

They are a superstar seller on eBay because they earned it, If they were bad, then they wouldn't have gotten it.
        People just love to over-exaggerate.

        • Um…they got stock but at a higher price point. Yeah….they must be telling the truth.

        • -1

@djcharliek: With companies like that, they don't source their phones from 1 single place.

If they ran out of the place which sells the cheapest phone, they need to source it from another place which is slightly more expensive. Hence the price increase.

They source from Europe, USA, HK, China, Korea and other countries

  • For all the android phones I have used, they would need to reboot from time to time because of FCs, frozen, etc. and I found that taking the battery out and reinserting it would sure help a clean reboot.

Can anyone with a phone that has no removable battery share your experience rebooting your phone when it is stubbornly frozen and pressing the power button does not help?

    • Can anyone with a phone that has no removable battery share your experience rebooting your phone when it is stubbornly frozen and pressing the power button does not help?

That has never happened to my nonremovable-battery phones. S6, OnePlus, Z3, Z2 Tablet, Z Ultra, HTC One M8, M7, and a whole bunch of tablets.

It's not an issue whatsoever. Virtually no Android tablets have removable batteries and nobody has complained about not being able to pull the battery out.

      • Are you lucky or a light user? I've all my devices ROOTED (not the LG G4 yet, but I'll soon), and they all played up from time to time.

        • All of them played up so much that you couldn't turn them on and off with the power button?

I'd say you're an unlucky user, rather than me being a lucky user. :)

        • Never had a problem with a non-removable battery phone. I am a power user and a flash-a-holic, I root all my devices as soon as I get them, unlock bootloaders, flash custom recoveries, occasionally soft bricking devices every now and then.

Devices that don't have removeable batteries usually have a button combination that you hold to force it to hard reset much akin to PCs.

    • By "pressing power button" do you mean pressing it like you normally would or actually holding it down (+/- the vol down) to force a reboot?

I've installed plenty of roms over a few phones and have never encountered a situation where I couldn't force a reboot by holding down the power button for a few seconds.
