Have sent maybe 30 or so in my time. Not many, but I'm yet to lose a single one.

      • +7

Have sent over 200. Have never lost a single one.

It's an unhelpful feeling company and you don't like having wait in line but I just fill everything out myself and use the postboxes.

    • The deal here includes tracking as well.

      • The deal here includes tracking as well.

        Yeah, and so what ??

ALL Australia Post parcel services include tracking as standard.

    • +3

Are you one of those who tries and sends things in paper envelopes? Because that is the only time where I didn't receive a package from AusPost - the envelope that the seller sent to me disintegrated on transport (HDMI adapter in a business envelope). Never lost a package in 12 years of eBay selling.

Better luck next time; sorry for your loss(es).

    • +6

My wife runs an online business and primarily uses Australia Post. Lost parcels definitely do occur and more frequent than you may think. Without going through our past records, I would say about 2-4 parcels every 100 sent.

      • +2

maybe shes doing something unconventional with the shipping and/or not checking addresses (a surprising number of people dont know what suburb they live in or the correct postcode… and think they need to put their closest major city as the suburb…)

I only send satchels and C5 ~15mm thick envelopes and loss rate is a bit under 1% (about 25 from 3000 items sent) incl international, with most of those losses being overseas. at a guess maybe 10/2000 losses locally (0.5%). not too bad

  • Good deal indeed! Thanks op!

  • +13

Looks like they are trying to spread a thin, thin coating of sugar to distract from the outrageous price hikes in the pipeline…

    • +6

Exactly what I was thinking. The prices for <500g in particular is outrageous especially if you send a really small item just over "large letter" size. I really would like an explaination how China etc can send an item virtually for free here and obviously once it arrives in Aust it is delivered by Aust post like any other parcel!

      • +1

I'm pretty sure that the Hongkong post is subsidized

      • +2

Yes China and Honkers are heavily subsidised.
Also, most other postal services offer a "Petite Parcel" (small parcels) service for exactly that scenario; an item larger than a letter but not worthy of a full-sized parcel - say like a deck of cards you can send for $3-4
Australia Post has only a few crude tiers now. IE its a large letter or if it's wider than 2cm, no matter how tiny, your item is a >500g parcel and cost ~$8

      • +2

I really would like an explaination how China etc can send an item virtually for free here

Simple explanation really: the Government subsidises Chinese postage to hell and back to make their export figures look good.

        • Tony Abbott, is that you??

This is a genuine way to stimulate the countries economy.

          Nothing underhanded and benefits everybody.

          Think.

        • Source? Also are they subsidised the whole $7.40 or charged nowhere near that amount……

        • +2

          @Bargainz:

To clarify my comment was in relation to how Westerners can buy stuff for $1 with "free" post from China, and that is because the Chinese Government fronts all the costs, for better or for worse.

As for Australia Post, it's some weird public/private hybrid. Arguably the worst of both worlds (the "inefficiency" aspect of public, and the "socialisation of losses/privatisation of profits" aspects of private in addition to paying some overpaid CEO with crap ideas any monkey can cook up and then who proceeds to fund Muslim charities or whatever). Sounds familiar? Hint: monopoly of the Telecom industry.

        • @DeafMutePretender: Not arguing regarding the subsidisation, that is apparent irrespective of China or even Aust post footing the bill.

What I really would like to know is how much in $ value is the subsidisation? And if it is less than what we are paying, well that leaves the question of why (rhetorical).

Completely agree worst of both worlds!

      • +2

        Because we pay for it.

As I know it, countries have an agreement to distribute received mail once it has entered the country. All China does is ship it to Australia and the rest of the handling is done by Aus Post.

I think this is a great deal - I will try call tomorrow and follow up but in case anyone else here might know, can you go in a pre-purchase a bunch of these and use them later in the year (closer to Christmas)? I can't see why not?? Reading the terms and conditions, I don't think it states otherwise or am I just a noob?!

    • +4

No must be sent within this timeframe, by 30 sept. Not a prepaid satchel situation

    • +2

These are not prepaid satchels you can buy in bulk and use laterr. This only applies to parcels initiated and paid within the promotional period.

      • +2

        OK - thanks guys!

  • +1

Applicable where the product weighs 501 grams to 1kg

    • +1

      Thanks. Have updated title. :)

  • +2

I ship sometimes a few items on eBay for 1kg in the AusPost Box BX1 (up to 1KG) for 7.90$ (+ cost of the box ) … a bit cheaper but not express.

    • This is only if the purchase was done through ebay isn't it?

      • I think so … but I bet only the T&Cs are stopping you of creating a second eBay account and selling a 1cent item to the other one and include free shipping. :-)

  • +2

    hmnn…. If only I didn't have access to work's Express Post envelopes…..

  • +5

I dislike Australia post for various reasons too many to list here - without getting foul

There is an alternative to it but not everyone is aware - or can access it ( please check the website for locations)

But those who can should think about supporting this new venture and tell aus post to ' stick it'

    So here goes

    http://get.parcelconnect.com.au

Are you bored of waiting in queues? Here is a convenient new way to send your parcels suiting your lifestyle.

Parcel Connect allows you to send your parcels through Parcel Connect agents. These agents are retail outlets with extended business hours so you can send a parcel before or after work and even on the weekends.

Visit one of the participating Parcel Connect agents to discover a great new parcel service.

You can send A4 satchel (1kg maximum) for $7.95 and A3 satchel (3 kg maximum) for $12.95. These prices are available for deliveries within the Fastway delivery network.

Save time and save money by sending your parcel via Parcel Connect.

    • Not bad, but hopefully will get better with more locations and better rates for bigger parcels.

    • +1

A PS to the post re: get.parcelconnect.com.au

Don't overlook the fine line at the bottom of page

You can still send your parcels, even if you're not close to a Parcel Connect agent listed above. Visit Parcel Connect website to find an agent in your area.

    • Currently NSW only.

    • +1

Beware parcelconnect should have delivered stuff to my address, the fastway driver stopped where I could see him in front of my property (no gate, just 10m driveway, stairs can be seen from the street) and put a card into my letterbox that he could not deliver because no one was at home. So I could pick up my parcel after 12:00 at the nearest agent. Tried re-delivery through the website, next possible one 2 days later. Complaint will follow.

      • +3

Fastway couriers are just franchised, the one that serves our business in Melbourne's east is hopeless, we always use couriers please instead

        • +3

Fastway is shitty as always, even worse than Aupost

    • +1

Agree with your comments about Australia Post,
however we have also had issues with FastWay.
We found Fastway to be great for local deliveries within Sydney, but erratic outside of Sydney. Therefore unfortunately we had to stop using FastWay.

  • Great deal, thanks!

  • https://www.sendle.com/#pricing ,direct competition to Auspost I guess ☺

    • Any reviews on Sendle?

  • Anybody else been having issues with their depot in Sunshine? Always seems to sit there between 2 and 7 days.

As far as I am aware ALL parcels posted within Australia have tracking if paid over the counter. On your receipt you will find this noted as "Article ID."

Bit annoyed my elderly mother was asked to pay a few extra dollars for "tracking" last week. Fortunately she didn't; parcel she posted was trackable. There is one Post Office lady who needs to be better informed.

    • +1

Yep. As someone who's been doing a lot of ebay selling and posting over the last 6 months or so, pretty much every parcel has basic tracking these days. As long as you lodge it at a counter anyway.

    • +1

Yes, and furthermore if they are prepaid satchels or manifested deiveries (ie: Ebay Postage or Click and Send) then the Article ID is assigned already, and hence you do not need to lodge over the counter to get one assigned.

The tracking is not particularly useful, however some people find it exciting. There is an expectation that "tracking" somehow places a GPS device on the parcel, so that it can be located at any instant,,, but the reality is that tracking doesn't work like that at all.

The main advantage of tracking is to prove that an item arrived, so that you don't fall victim to Ebay "Item Not Recieved" claims.

A 3kg prepaid express satchel is $14.80. Less if you buy in packs of 10. This deal isn't so great if comparing weights as for an extra $2.30, you can stuff another 2kg.

    • +1

This deal is great for item that's bigger than the 3kg satchel size, but still weighs 1kg.

  • I am confused how this is a deal when 3KG satchel is around $15.

    • $13.40 or $14.80 express…they did 501g-1kg for $10 promo a couple of months ago which was better, guess they felt they didn't make enough money from it.

If anyone sells on eBay look at using the eBay postage, $11.70 for 3kg or $7.15 for 500g.

      • The $10 promo in June was for regular post on 501g-1kg. The express post was $1 extra.

    • It's a deal if ur item is between 501-1kg and u don't need the 3kg option.

      • Like I said above, if your item didn't fit 3kg satchel because its bigger but still within 501g - 1kg, than this is a deal, because it would cost around $14- 16.50 to send bigger 1kg item on regular not express.

  • A good alternative for heavier or larger items is e-go.com.au. $13.20 between capital city metro areas (except Darwin) for up to about 20kg (depending on size, but it's reasonably generous). Need add $1.10 for re-delivery if there's a possibility the recipient may not be there, or send to depot instead (cheaper).

    • I have used E-go before to post some car parts across the country and was happy enough. I was told by the receiver though that the package looked like it had been through a war zone when it was delivered. There are a lot of bad reviews about E-go on the net however, so I'd use caution sending valuable items.

  • +2

All these alternatives are great but do any of them promise next day delivery like express?

  • I sent 6 parcels this week, saved around $30. Good deal and softens the blow from eBay fees and PayPal fees.

    • I got jinxed this week. Sent an express post item last week, checked notification and it has gone to Sydney 3 times, and Melbourne 3 times. Marked as damaged, and delivered to the wrong suburb. Thankfully was an item worth just under $100.

      • I had the exact same experience.
My item kept oscillating between Melbourne and Sydney before being delivered (10 days).

  • My local PO said, 'nah was just for June'. Luckily it was a small parcel and wasn't too expensive.

    • Weird. It's on the AusPost website and it doesn't state any exclusions.. But if it was small and under 500g then it wouldn't have been eligible.

      • I took all this stuff to include to make it the req'd weight, but just ended up sending the small thing. I wish I'd thought to be sure of my facts before going. It's just the local guy in the newsagent, really nice and helpful …. most of the time.

  • Fastway are absolute useless in Melbourne

  • Too bad my items were close to 1.5KG no way to use these ones
