  • "used either with ground coffee (1 or 2 cups) or with the “Easy Serving Espresso” pods"
That sounds like having the best of both worlds…

Has anyone seen these pods around? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easy_Serving_Espresso_Pod

    • yep, super markets have'em or used to. They were for Philips Senseo coffee machines

  • I actually bought this exact coffee machine from a lady selling on facebook, got it for 40 bucks 2 months old.
Anyways, it's a good machine to start with if you're into making coffee at home.
Still trying to find the right ground coffee to work it.

if you do not have a grinder then buy this one

      • I've been looking for one.. this grinder highly recommended?

        • I bought BCG820 before BCG600 was available. Mine works very well with Sunbeam 7000.

If I did not have mine I would buy BCG600 at this price for sure. The main difference is that BCG600SIL does not have the LCD screen.

        • Two separate or should buy this.

          Breville BES870 all in one?

          Or buy grinded bean?

        • @superforever:
It's always better to grind your own for a couple of reasons…
You can adjust the grind as needed for your machine.
Ground coffee goes stale faster than beans.

An all in one machine may suit you, personally I prefer to keep them as separate machines so that if one dies I can just replace that one. It also gives you more freedom with what you can buy.

I believe people quite liked the BCG800 but I have no experience with it myself.

      • I bought this grinder today. Coming from a cheaper, smaller style grinder the difference blew me away! Even on my first go the coffee was so much more intense in flavour. The step up to a conical burr grinder is a big one.

  • Something people should consider with this espresso machine.

I haven't used this, but I have a Saeco Via Venezia which uses a similar steam wand - which is awful.
They're designed to suck in a small amount of air at the top which mixes with the steam before going into the milk. In theory this is a great idea as it's a bit of an art holding the tip of a regular steam wand just below the surface of the milk to draw in a small amount of air to texture the milk. Too far below the surface and no air will be drawn in, too high and too much air will be drawn in creating large bubbles instead of foam.
I digress, the problem with these plastic steam wands that draw in the air for you, is that you can't stop texturing the milk. You end up with extremely foamy milk, as the description says “Cappuccino System”: it mixes steam, air and milk, producing a rich, creamy froth for great cappuccino. With a regular steam wand you can texture the milk to the right amount for your needs (be it a cappuccino, latte or flat white) and then bury the nozzle of the steam wand below the surface to heat the milk to the right temperature without creating excess foam.

Fortunately for me, I was able to find a regular steam wand from a different machine which fit mine.

    • Is it possible to plug this hole to stop it sucking in air, assuming it can be accessed?

      • +1

        Possibly, I couldn't on mine.
I can't tell with this one where it's drawing the air in. On the Via Venezia the plastic end of the steam wand is removable to wash it, there was a pin prick sized hole where it attached to the machine. So to block the hole would stop you from removing and cleaning it.
Also, the opening at the tip of the wand was enormous, I'm not sure you would be able to texture milk without hole where it attached to the machine.

I'm suspicious of the portafilter on this machine too. I can't work out why it has some sort of switch or something on the handle. It could again be similar to the Via Venezia where it has a pressurised portafilter to create artificial crema.

This might just be a machine for your average person that "wants to be into" coffee, without spending too much time. I am a coffee (profanity), so maybe I'm being too hard on this machine.

I got a the cheapest Sunbeam machine I could find to see if I could be bothered with this whole scene, I burnt it out in about 16 months so I was convinced I should get a better machine.

          Good to know.. Thanks.
Yes i couldn't tell from the picture too. I might have to go to Myers to inspect it. MMmm.. i haven't got a father's day gift yet and this looks like something my wife would approve (from an aesthetic point), should have minimal resistance.

          @comfyjean7:
Get her to look at it in person.
I've found some of the stuff DeLonghi makes looks beautiful in pictures, but cheap and nasty in reality.
Take this kettle for example, which by the way would go swimmingly with the above espresso machine.

I really liked it until I looked at it closely, the handle (and all the other brown parts) are made of really nasty plastic.

        • @legiong: Point taken…
