Hey everyone, I've just booked a holiday to South Africa and I thought I would share the great prices that popped up. I was about to pay $1900 return for a Qantas flight from Brisbane when this earlybird sale was launched by Qantas! It's also forced the other airlines (Singapore, South African Airways) to lower their prices which is great!

Some prices:
Perth to Johannesburg return $1318
Adelaide to Johannesburg return $1318
Melbourne to Johannesburg return $1318
Sydney to Johannesburg return $1319
Brisbane to Johannesburg return $1322

Travel Dates
22 Jan 2016 to 18 Mar 2016, 19 Apr 2016 to 10 Sep 2016

Reminder for students of any age or anyone under 30, that especially if you are flying one way only, to any destination, go to STA Travel or Student Flights or the like and see what they can offer you. On some airlines they can do incredible discounts. I never thought a travel agent would save me money but there you go!

Also, it's not just South Africa that's on sale. There's great earlybird fares available to a host of destinations here. Just remember to go to IWTF to find the best possible price on a certain flight and date combination.

Offer ends 11 November.

  • Thanks OP. We booked tickets two weeks ago $2400 return each…. Going to see if there's anything we can do to match these new prices…

Ohh, rough. Do the travel dates lign up with the ones in this deal?

It might even work out cheapest to pay the cancellation fee on your current ticket and just get one of these flights instead. But it depends on the specifics.

Perth we are 4500k closer to Jo'berg thought they make it $1317?? rippddoff… great price though:)

    • Melbourne is cheaper than Sydney too even though the flight goes via Sydney.

    • I believe the Perth flights go via Sydney…. So in reality you're getting two 4 hour flights thrown in for free! Bargain!!!

  • Thanks for the bargain,
but I wanna go in November / December. I'm hoping Qantas can offer such a deal soon.

That's a great price. The only downside I can see is that you end up in Johannesburg :)

At least it's a return flight!

  • Any good deals to Cape Town? Or are flights from Johan not too expensive?

    • I bought to Cape Town for $1600 next year Feb. Great price

    • Just grab a connecting flight to Cape Town. I know BA flys there from London for example and they fly to Jo-burg

Check Kulula.com, Mango, Comair and SAA for flights Johannesburg to Cape Town. Do a search on www.cheapflights.co.za, www.southafrica.to or www.travelstart.co.za.
The prices go up and down but if you're patient and quick you can usually get flights for around R800 ($90) each way.

  • Ooh, I wanna be the biggest F mother streetwise professor in Jo-burg!

  • Is this really that cheap? Do prices get much better? I would have thought you could get 1k flights Melb to jburg?

    • +1

Yes, this is very cheap. My wife and I got a "2 for 1" deal back in 2009 which worked out a little cheaper - was 2 for 1 for the ticket only, airport taxes we paid for both which added up to rather a lot of money. You can sometimes find for around $1700 return although standard price is around the $2K mark. This is for direct flights which are only operated by Qantas and SAA and they codeshare the flight - this means there is zero competition on the direct flights.

You might find a little cheaper if you fly via Singapore or Dubai but consider that the direct flight from Sydney (no stops) is already almost 15 hours and anything via anywhere else would take substantially longer to get there.

Great prices and a great holiday destination as long as you use your common sense and stay safe. Good find OP.

      • Yeah, I mean SAA flies from Perth which is alright, and you usually get paired up with Virgin from the east coast. But the layover can be pretty nasty…

And yes they are superbly cheap. Considering the travel period includes winter holidays next year! And cheaper than options via Dubai and Singapore, for the time being at least.

  • There are only two airlines that fly directly to South Africa so not much competition. This is cheapest the tickets have been in a while. Only Qantas flying from the East Coast too
