  • Would the Castrol Edge be suitable for my Honda 2005 Euro with 120,000kms?

    • +4

Castrol has a lube finder website. I suggest you Google it.

    • 5W30 is fairly low viscosity.

I'd put 10W40 in most cars. SCA and Repco normally have them on for $20 for 5L. Just wait for a sale.

      • Never seen any castrol edge in any viscosity grade anywhere for $20 ever. This is what I exclusively use for my cars. $35 is what it typically comes down to during special.

        • I didn't mean 'edge' specifically. I was only talking about viscosity of the oil.

I think the edge is fully synthetic. You can get magnetec 10W40 semi-synthetic 5L for $20 when its sale time.

It's been this price a few times (even cheaper - $15.99 from memory) just rare

http://www.datateck.com.au/lube/castr_au/ the 5w30 edge is the recommendation. I don't. Think the 5w40 would hurt. Probably a better oil.

    • Perfectly fine for your Euro mate.

Type in "Honda Euro" at this website from Castrol if you wish to double check.

Edited: too busy Googling to see the above post was made in my absence :).

      …..

    • I'd choose the 5w-40. But either should be fine.

    • -1

For a newish car i'd think 0/5W30 would be best.
      for 150,000 km+ 0/5W40

      • This is all pretty silly talk becuase the high number in oil visco is actually climate related. The 5w 40 is a better oil. There is a chart in every owners manual. Oils should be chosen differently depending on location in Darwin you want a different oil to Melbourne. You are want a different bigger number depandant om minimum temp. The api grades etc are whats important to.manufacturers. that's why 15w40 is used widely as a shop oil in Aus. It covers a wide range of climate conditions with a small compromise on fuel efficiency.

    • I'm still using the 5-30 in my Honda Accord euro from the last special.

    • yeah, it's fine, i use it on my 220,000 2006 Euro…. both 5W30 or 5W40 are fine

Does anyone have any thoughts on the mountain bike?

    • +1

I bought the bike last time it was on sale.

It is comfortable to ride and is suitable for riding on the streets. It is not a heavy duty off road machine.

Nb. Easy to assemble and no torque wrench is really required.

For the price it is great and I expect it will easily last 5 - 10 years with me riding it weekly.

      • Awesome, thanks.

  • Good find thanks for that op.

Anyone know what the major differences between using A3/B4 over A5/B5? Castrol used to make a A5/B5 specifically for my car (volvo c30) but don't seem to any more. The datateck site (thanks sillyhead) says the A3/B4 is recommended tho.

    • +1

A5/B5 is meant for extended use, I believe. Castrol still makes A5/B5 versions of the Edge, but it's branded Edge Professional now. it is hard to find though. I've been using the normal Edge for by XC60, and it's been fine..

I heard the edge is a inferior but cheap full synthetic. Something to do with the fracking process??? I wonder if they'll be another promotion on helix ultra. Would that meet the spec? Got some of that for $27.99 on another deal. That stuff is prime.

        • thanks for that Mislovic and sillyhead.

I was a bit annoyed I missed the 25% for MOBIL 1 SYN 0W40 5L ENGINE OIL. Dunno if that's worth it though.

Yeah I read on a few forums that it has to be the particular German Castrol Edge for Volvo, but then they took it off the consumer market so its quite hard to get. I'm mainly doing this, because I assume whatever the mechanic puts in is the cheap and nasty and I'm hoping that this Castrol Edge will be a lot better (even if it's not the best).

I think this is it - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Castrol-1502CD-EDGE-0W-30-A5/dp/B00B…, pity shipping would be a bomb even if it was possible.

Waiting for one of these sales….

    • I bought 6 then, still have 4 bottles left. I doubt it will ever go down to those prices again :(

      • Thanks to lower Aussie since last year

  • Castrol Edge 5w-30
Looks like I'll be heading down on Sat :) Probably have none left though :(

  • Great price on the creeper, almost bought one yesterday.. glad I didn't!

    • Club card would give you credit back if you did.

      • +1

    On another note:
The Castrol Edge is perfect for my daily driver. The mechanic is happy to discount supplied parts/fluids from the service cost. Win!

    • Learn to change the oil yourself, Win!

      • I serviced all my own cars, until I bought new cars with warranty etc.
        Needs VACC certified stamp.

  • This is in store only? Or both in-sore and online?

    • both :)

  • What if I buy engine oil before the sale with a member's card, would I have credit given back?

    • Actually a good question… but what will you do with the credit, pretty much everything available else there is cheaper in the outside market anyway…

    • yes - credit just received :)

  • +2

Don't forget to stack this with the ebay click15 promo. Catalogue starts 30th and will be reflected in their ebay store most likely. Ebay store doesn't stock oils/paints though iirc

    • +2

Looks like they do have oil in their eBay store. Will be interesting to see if this discount applies there too.

      • oh, must just be paint then. or perhaps they just didnt have the oil i searched for haha

    • FYI, the Castrol GTX 15w-40 is on sale on eBay.

    • Ebay has that oils. However it seems click15 is expired. Buying from online store with a new account is a better deal

  • Liverpool's out of both Edge's.

  • Picked up 2(for 6cyl.) w5-30 in BJ. The next car's service is covered. Sweet deal. Thanks

  • someone's bought ten each of the edges on ebay :)

  • Heaps of Edge stocked at Berrimah, NT… Just got 6 Edges, a jack stand and a couple of Bendix premium brake pads…

  • ah damnit missed out on this! only just decided this week that i'd try doing my own oil change for once.

anyone recommend an alternative to a 5W-30 (as recommended by the manual) for my 2005 corolla? is something like the Shell Helix HX7 for $34 fine? this Nulon full syntethic seems good for $40?
