Long time lurker, first time poster.
I was browsing SCA website this morning and checked their catalogue and found they are having another sale on the Castrol Edge Titanium for $27.49 each on 5w-30 and 5w-40. This is possibly the cheapest I have seen since Repco had it for $29.99 in August.

*Limit 2 per customer. Time to stock up again.

    thanks i need to stockup

Damn, best price I've seen it before. I was going to run something a little thicker, but I may have to give the 5w-40 a whirl. Also, protip - buy it on your club card, and you'll get the credit put on your card when these go on sale. That way you don't need to worry about stock levels on the weekend.

  • What about paying now online and picking up on the weekend. Wonder if they'll refund the difference.

Use it with the free $10 from another deal…$17.49 is as low as they will ever be.

  • I only use Penrite HPR 5 5W-40 Fully Synthetic to keep my 2002 Echo 1.3 L running like a dream:

    http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products.php?id_categ=1&id_bran…

Can you get the same quality from Castrol because CMIIW, this Castrol is not fully synthetic?

FYI - I also use RON 98 fuel.

    • +1

Castrol edge is full synth (at least for the 5w-30 and 5w-40, not sure about the 25w-50 etc).

      • +1

At least the penrite hpr5 is on the official mb 229.5 list. With Castro they have so many different versions of the same oil you will never know. I know it used to be only the European Castrol edge was approved. Not the edge we got/get here.

    • +6

you should run RON 100. even better for the echo

    • +1

Lol, nice attempt at a troll.

    • +4

Pfft, for a car of that calibre, I'm surprised you're not using Royal Purple

    • 98 in a Toyota Echo? More $$$ than sense to waste the money on of all things a 1.3L Echo?

      • +1

Why not? It's more responsive when I accelerate hence I don't need to push the gas pedal all the way to the floor. As for the Penrite, it keeps my car running smoothly and less noises and knocking in the engine. I use good quality oil and fuel in order to extend the life of my car and keep it running well for years.

I've tried running my car with RON 100 from United but I couldn't justify the price/performance ratio so I switched to RON 98. I don't understand why people think I'm lying/trolling when I'm just trying to look after my car. In the long run, it's cheaper to maintain your car in tiptop condition than to keep repairing it because you're too tight to put the good stuffs in your car.

The price difference between RON 98 and RON 91 is only $ 0.10/liter. My fuel tank capacity is only 45 L, therefore I only pay an extra $ 4.50 to get high quality fuel. If one tank can last me one week, I only need to spend an extra = $4.5 x 52 weeeks = $ 234/year for a better driving experience (responsive throttle), cleaner engine and cleaner burning fuel.

  • shame it wasn't on special in time for tomorrow nights sale with the extra free $10 ($20 total credit to use)

    • +2

i think you can just buy it tomorrow and they will refund you the difference when the sales is on

      • oh yeah thats right! will definately get some now

        • +2

but you will be getting loyalty credits not cash though. Prefer cash just in case there is nothing I want from SCA

  • If bought in the two weeks prior doesn't the difference get credited to your club card?

    • Although come to think of it you will end up with $40+ that will need to be spent within a month, which could be a hassle.

    • +1

any difference between that old deal and this new one? The box looks different.

      • +2

old metal vs new plastic mounting bracket :)

  • The Club+ sale for tomorrow 30 September 6-8PM stated "Get early access to the 24 page Happy Bathurst day catalogue".
Does this mean we can get the catalogue prices tomorrow?

    • I thought it just meant we get a sneak preview that's all

  • must buy for stock

  • According to Castrol, my car takes both 5w-30 and 5w-40. It's a European late model hatch. Would either be more beneficial? Just for normal driving.

    • +1

Basically the two oils will be the same viscosity when cold, so both good for getting oil around quickly with cold.

But 30 will be thinner when hot, so when pushing the engine and creating a lot of heat the oil make shear (loosing protection) where as the 40 will stay thicker at the same heat.

Also oil temps will go up quicker with thinner oils.

      • +1

I think one of the points of going a synthetic oil was that it was resistant to shearing.

        • Just dont lose it when your engine looses protection

  • Time to buy a case.

Let me get this right.. I recently signed up to their VIP to get $10 signup credit. They have a free $10 on their shopping night tomorrow, so total of free $20.

The price we pay tomorrow night on the Edge oil will be $68.80. Technically we pay $48.80 now, but with the new catalog price kicking in on the 4th Oct, we will have $41.39 credit based on their price guarantee in our account. Making the total spent on one Castrol edge 5w-30 5L a total of $7.41. Seems like a good deal to me as long as we do get the credit back.

    • +1

Then use the credit to buy more on Saturday.

      • 2 day only deal.

        • +1

Wouldn't the credit from buying at the full price tomorrow night be available to use on the weekend when the price goes down ?

        • @scottb721: My bad. You're right.

  • What is the difference between Castrol Edge 5W-30 or Castrol Professional 5W-30 (I had from a VW dealer). I could not find the Professional variant in Australia (yes… was not Edge Professional…just Castrol Professional)

    • Castrol Professional 5W-30 is and Castrol Edge 5W-30 isn't VW 504/507 Approved.

VW 504/507 is long life and low SAP (better for Diesels).

      • +1

low sap is only needed for diesels with a dpf

if you dont have a dpf then there are better options

        • Actually low SAP oils are better for Direct Injection petrol engines too, it will reduce deposits on the intake valve.

    • Not much difference. If you can't find the latter, it makes the choice easy :)
Without "edge" it may have been a semi-synthetic.

    • I called VW service centre about engine oil of my VW Passat 2.0 TSI. The guy said as long as it was 5w-30 and fully synthetic, that 'd be all right. Brand does not matter, but he recommended Castrol.

  • Subaru put 5w-40 in my 3.0R but I might make the switch to the Edge 5w-30.

Think I might get a bottle tomorrow using the $10+$10 discounts then 2 more on the weekend at the catalogue price.

  • My oil level check light literally turned on this morning. That's some pretty solid timing right there.

    • +3

Thankfully it wasn't your oil pressure light.

  • I drive a Magna at about 180k plus kms on dual fuel. Wondering which oil is better between Castrol Edge and Magnatec.

    • -1

Magnatec isn't highly regarded at all… Wouldn't use it. Check some reviews online..

  • Genuine question, does oil go off?

My car has 12mth service intervals and doesn't get close to the 15K in between. So if a buy 2 now, it wont be until mid next year i use the 1st bottle and mid 2016 when use the 2nd. Is this ok?

    • +1

To my novice car knowledge, engine oil do not expire provided that it is factory sealed prior to topping… Surely a pro would be able to confirm on this.

    • +1

      not from Castrol but…

      http://www.valvoline.com/faqs/motor-oil/general-motor-oil/

Does motor oil expire? How long does motor oil generally last?
Valvoline motor oil does not have a documented expiration date. Under optimal conditions, the product is stable for an extended period of time and can be used as long as the American Petroleum Institute (API) rating on the label continues to meet or exceed the requirements listed in your owner's manual. If the rating is still current, shake the container before use to blend any additives that may have settled.

    • +1

Supposedly not in normal conditions, but if it gets really cold, it can. I would personally have no issue using sealed oil that's been in my shed for a year or two.

      • My car saved oil, so I used my Castrol oil 5L for 3 years. No problem.

    • +1
  • Can anyone recommend which one will be better for Ford Futura 2005? Thanks

  • Can anyone confirm how long it will take for the price guarantee credit to be usable?

For example, I buy some tonight and go again coming Sat to claim the credit, will I be able to use the $41.39 credit straight away?

    • Ugh this isn't looking good… Maybe we physically gotta go into the store

  • Anyone received their $10 for tonight's event? So far the only $10 applied is to my old account (with spam enabled)

    • I'll just worry about it at the register.

  • +1

One bottle down. Seems there were some issues with the night's $10 credit so the discount had to be added manually.

I asked about the credit when the oil goes on sale and was told it takes 2 weeks. Might mean the credit from tonight may not be available when buying 2 more bottles on Saturday.

    • Hmm this is concerning, because I bought mine at full price fully expecting to come in when they go on sale to spend the credit on buying a couple more.

Could a workaround be bringing the original one in for a refund of full purchase price then buying it again at discounted? I know its a little petty but if the credit doesn't apply in time, it was a waste of time and money in the first place.

  • I went into my local SCA last night to use the $10 credit and ended up picking up 2 bottles of the 5w-40 at the sale price as someone had mistakenly put the weekend price tag up… less the $10 credit, and the $10 joining credit it will be a cheap service (for a change - I need 7l of oil :/)

    • Well done!

If you don't mind me asking, what sort of car do you have?

      • For a BMW M3 - It's actually about 6.xx litres I usually require.. always have to get 2x 5 litres as the 1 litre packs are pretty average values, and there are no 10l packs in Castrol or Mobil 1

        • So how do you store the remaining oils?
You need to wait another 6 months roughly before you can use the remaining, unless you have a second car. I am just interested on how people keep the remaining oils….

        • @thinair79:

Close the cap and use it in 6mos to a year?

  • sorry for late notice - sale prices now available for those who had their free bonus credit extended until tonight :)

  • Oops. Just bought 2 bottles online but forgot about oil refund credit from buying Tues night. Went back in and checked and sure enough $41 sitting there so bought a couple more. Hopefully they'll refund the first purchase rather than the second.

  • Just got mine in store. The bottle is a different design from when I last bought it and different from the catalog image.

Definitely the correct Oil as per the label on the container.

    5W-30 A3/B4 Fully Synthetic

  • Bought one last Tuesday night used my $20 credit, got credit back this morning, bought another two in store and paid $13.59, overall three bottles of best oil for just over $60. Can't beat it.

  • +1

Store was happy to let me have the 4. "We got tons so take as many as you want"

I think 5 will do me. That's 4 oil changes.

  • They had a line up this morning and sold out of the 5W-40. Luckily I only needed the 5W-30 so I purchased one.

    • perhaps click+collect next time? :)

      • perhaps :)

  • Bought online to pick up instore, 2 under my name, 2 under the gfs name. No problems picking them both up without her there. Just had to take a copy of her confirmation email.

  • Bought two for my VW Passat. They will last years.

  • Just tried at 2 stores. Both all gone.

  • Auburn NSW + South Wentworthville NSW all sold out!

So freaking quick, did everyone line up in the morning to get those oils or SCA simply just put 10 bottles each onto the shelf in each shop???

    • SCA Fairy Meadow had probably more than 50 stacked at the front of the aisle, and maybe 20+ on the shelf and floor. Not sure about other stores though. But I didn't get the 5w-40, they weren't even there on the previous Tuesday night.
