Hey all! My name is Alex (the keyboard monkey who's hijacked the MechKB Facebook account, as well as this OzBargain account) and I've been chosen to take the mantle of MechKB in place of Roland (top bloke, that guy). I may have interacted with some of your folks in the past month. I suppose this is my formal introduction to you bargain hunters. I've got some pretty big shoes to fit, but I am hoping to grow the mechanical keyboard community as to the best of my ability.

    • Same experience here but could the Store Rep issue proper taxation invoices so we could claim these keyboards for work purpose. BTW I am typing this with my Topre keyboard and it brings on a smile everytimes, so far anyway.

If you can't get in touch with them, it's the same building as PCByte, just give them a call and ask for mechkb haha

  • I am trying to get used to the height of the key (I assume all Cherry based keyboards are the same).
And I am still a bit uncomfortable about gaps between key caps (key caps are narrow at the top… I am not used to such gaps…) :)

    • My wild guess would be that you came from using a keyboard with low-profile keycaps; say, a scissor switch, chicklet or one of those ergonomic wave keyboards?

I'm glad you took the leap to try something new. You should give them a chance and trial them or for a few days. Most people come out being advocates for mechanical keyboards. It's all right if they aren't your thing though. Everyone has their preference.

      • My previous keyboard was low profile.
But when I had a mechanical keyboard in the past I recon keys were surrounded by plastic bevel. These days with Corsair they are sticking out of the flat aluminium plate. :)
So it creates the impression that the keys are so high.

Still not sure about key caps size - they used to be bigger in the past. :)
But I am sure I had smaller fingers back there as well (20+ years ago). :)

        • Ah, right! The some people seem to like bezel-less keyboards due to looks or ease of cleaning.

The cool thing about Cherry MX based mechanical keyboards is the customization options you have. You can find some lower profile keycaps from Signature Plastics or from group buys on Massdrop or Geekhack (they're usually called DSA profile keycaps). Here's a picture of the EVE keycap set:

Signature Plastics also manufacture the 'classic' tall keycaps like those you'd find on old keyboards. They're called SA profile keycaps. Here's a picture of the 1976 keycap set:

Keycaps have become collectors items among keyboard nerds like me. It's quite an expensive hobby though. There's quite a lot to be experienced with mechanical keyboards!

        • @MechKBmonkey:
          Thanks for the tip. :)

      • I didn't really notice until I went back to a membrane keyboard.
These are like headphones. You never know what you're missing out on until you try something better. Unlike headphones though, the expenditure on keyboards top out around $150-$250 for the really premium mech KBs.

  • Wow!
    That postage is really quick!
    Thanks for this deal! :)

  • +1 thanks for this one.

picked up the razer chroma, was here the next morning!

never thought i'd be this crazy over novelty lights. they're glorious. now i just need an updated razer mouse with chroma instead of lone green.
