How come when i search ebay this simply does not show up?
    http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/Hard-Drives-HDD-SSD-NAS-/158830/iā€¦

    • +4

may not have been made publicly searchable so as to limit to buyers from OzB

      • +1

Is that an option with listings?

Only thought I've had is that new listings take a while to "propagate".

        • +2

I'm just guessing, don't know for sure. My bad if I am wrong.

    • +3

its because your search criteria is 100-249GB.. and they haven't specified anything in the size field.

  • +4

Thanks TA! Could you please get us a good deal on 480-500GB SSD during 15% off? I've been waiting for one since a long time.

    • +25

Been pushing PCB & SE on the SanDisk 480GB for 2 days. Have my fingers & toes crossed for tomorrow.

      • +2

You need to cross your arms and legs too :P

      • +1

Thanks. I have faith in you.

      • Any chance of a Samsung or Intel 500GB deal?

        Pretty please Mr. Tightarse…

  • +1

What the heck, this is so cheap!

  • +5

For a moment I thought it was the 240gb and my heart skipped a beat.

  • +1

    Thanks TA!

    Great work again TA!

    Waiting for Samsung SSD deal…

Would this be any good for an Acer e_machine 10 inch….??? Thanks.

    • +7

would an Acer e_machine 10 inch be any good with this SSD?

      • +1

would this work in my $199 netbook?

        • +3

I've tried SSDs in a netbook and they don't really make a massive difference. This is with 2G RAM installed which is the max in a Netbook. Likewise, whilst Windows 10 will install and work ok the Netbook is much happier with Windows 7.

Frankly the CPU (processor) struggles to keep up in both instances. I think this is the limiting factor. I've tried an SSD on an old P4 machine, circa 2004, and it worked great but the Netbook is juts a little too low-spec.

That said, I still use my Netbook for site visits as it's perfectly adequate for that and given it only cost $200 in the first place it's no great loss should it die.

        • Thanks for the info….

100% not the cheapest SSD deal on OzBargain, I've bought some $30 120GB dell ones before.

  • +1

My 4 year old Pyro SSD is starting to show some symptoms of ageing. TA, you've done it again!

    • +5

      wrinkles?

  • +1

    • +2

Where are you getting beer for $5!?

  • +1

Waiting for Samsung 500gb ssd deal…anything?

    • +1

the 1 TB would be of more interest, then the need to have SSD and spindle for storage is gone. Especially for notebook upgrades where there is only room for one drive.

to replace the CD drive with a caddy is also not always practical because of so many notebook types on the market now.

  • Thanks, bought a bunch for office use.

  • Wow. I don't need another SSD and these eBay sales are sending me broke but how can I say no? This is a crazy price.

    • Give one of these to someone with slow computer - buy a loyal friend for life.

  • Argh I'm trying to grab some and ebay just freezes when it tries to connect with paypal

    so frustrating :(

  • +3

Write speed is pretty slow for SSD
    Up to 180 MBps

    • Only saw this after I bought it.

My brother bought the 240GB version the other day and the write speed is 350MB/s so I assumed it was the same.

My 1TB WD Blue HDD is rated at 126MB/s but reaches speeds of up to 152MB/s write speed, not far off this SSD write speed.

At least windows will load 3.4 times faster in theory though and I'll have my 1TB drive as storage.

      • +3

I've installed heaps of 120/128G SSDs in typical office PCs/laptops, including this model, Samsung, Intel, Kingston etc and in the real world away from the test bench you'll struggle to notice any difference between the varying models.

The big gains are start-up, and moving between applications and just general responsiveness with no noise and little heat. They're also really useful if you're low on RAM. Paired with a spinning HDD for bulk storage e.g. media is the perfect combination.

Personally for my own PCs I tend towards the 240G versions but that's because my basic Windows installation including apps is approaching 100G.

        • +1

I installed 250G Samsung SSD into my 6 year old dell studio laptop with Core 2 processor and 3GB ram and it makes huge difference. Boot up Windows 7 in 15 secs and all applications are very responsive. very happy.

        • +1

Core 2 and above will be great with an SSD and will handle Windows 10 perfectly okay as well.

I've found that both Windows 8 and 10 to be more CPU-intensive than Windows 7 hence why the Netbook suffers. I've got customers running Intel C2D E2160s with 2G RAM and an SSD perfectly happily.

Personally I think many people forget that most users just do general web/email/office/media "stuff" and that pretty much any dual core PC will suffice for that. Adding an SSD just makes them so much more responsive for this "stuff" and is the biggest single upgrade you can do…

        • Thanks for the info, makes me feel better about my purchase.

    • Yes and in practice they don't even reach that speed. They are slow SSDs and not worth buying at all! WD Blacks are quicker! :)

Spend a little more and get a SSD that actually performs like a SSD. These rubbish Sandisk "SSD Plus" drives keep going on special…it is pretty obvious why (hint: they need to flog them off).

      • +3

It's not all about write speed, IO plays a huge part.

SSDs make so much difference to the subjective 'feel' of the computer. Once you go SSD you never go Black.

        • +2

Yep, not even close. SSD hands down, even slower ones as this.

        • @Click_It:

My point is that for a little more you can get something that actually performs like a SSD should - eg, Samsung 850 Evo. Buying these SSD Plus drives is a waste of money and effort to install them. Do it right and do it once!

        • @johnleckie70:

Fair enough. I like my Samsung SSD's too. I use these slower SanDisk's in older PC's limited to SATA 2 etc where the extra performance isn't needed or as scratch drives.

    • +1

Still better than a HDD, it's not all about write speed, IO will help to make the OS more responsive compared to HDD.

  • +1

Lowest price ever for ssd here? No you need to beat $25 for that.

    • +1

      what capacity was it though?

    • +1

      I've seen 32GB SSD's sell for less than $15 for what it's worth… lol

  • -3

The eBay advert now says AU$64.00, not AU$54.40.

    • +3

because of the 15% off with the click15 code

    • +1

Thanks Captain Electrode, I didn't know about the click15 code either and was just about to ask the same/similar question so thanks for taking the flak instead of me :-)

  • +1

I think we need to make a new rule here at OzBargain.

"If the deal isn't not from tightarse, it isn't the cheapest deal!"

I feel so shamed for paying $125 + $50 ebey voucher for this from last weeks deal.

I knew this gonna happen, rip wallet.

    • +1

      u got a $50 voucher tho

      • $20 is a massive difference for me

  • Ordered one late yesterday and it arrived this morning. Cheap and efficient.

  • any good for just running an operating system or should i get something else?

  • Does anyone know what the plastic outer rectangle piece is for? Looks like its supposed to be stuck to something?

    • +1

The rectangle thing is just a spacer. Some laptops ect require the 2.5" to be 9mm thick instead of the 7.5mm this one is.
      source

      • Thanks! Put mine in my desktop so it didn't even occur to me it might need changing sizes.

  • I'm going to install this in my N40L microserver - do i need a drive adapter, or can this just sit above my other drives / in the empty optical slot (since there's no moving parts)? that should be fine, yeah?

should i stick one of those little velcro stickers just to keep it in place, or would that melt? how hot do these get?

    • They don't get warm at all really, only from picking up heat from other components. I think you could Velcro it. Otherwise my old build had an ssd sandwiched between two 3.5 drives and it never failed once. Not sure on how much space the n40L has but.

      • cheers. plenty of room, i believe (haven't tinkered inside for a while!). there's a gap above the 4-slot drive bay, plus there's the optical drive bay which i have empty.

  • received mine, and the box was crushed - they sent it in an (unpadded) envelope!!! not just the box, but even the plastic insert was crushed!

anyone else received theirs damaged like that?

hopefully the drive works fine…haven't had the opportunity to try it out.
