XRGB-Mini Framemeister $263.49 USD (~$390.29 AUD) Shipped @ Warehouse Japan eBay

CLICK15

Have some older consoles (SNES, Megadrive, Sega Saturn, older Playstation, NeoGeo AES, etc) around and still suffering with composite or s-video output? Got too much cash burning a hole in your pocket? The eBay CLICK15 voucher gives you a chance to solve both problems at the same time.

The XRGB-mini Framemeister is a scandoubling and upscaling device that will enable you to plug these consoles into a flat panel TV via HDMI and play your games in crisp, perfect RGB. The Framemeister is the current undisputed champion in both quality and performance (low input lag). It also has the ability to emulate the scanlines that are generated on an older CRT TV.

Here is a crazy, indepth review, but a search on YouTube will probably yield other more newbie friendly reviews. Shmups forums also has a big discussion thread. If you are into this sort of thing you probably know all about it already anyway.

The cheapest place to order the Framemeister is from Japan. Here is a Buy It Now auction with free shipping for $309.99 USD.

  • (After 15% eBay offer) = $263.4915 USD
  • (After 2.5% Cashrewards cashback) = $256.90 USD
  • Using Paypal's shoddy conversion of 0.675124 = Final Total of $380.529 AUD shipped

Even though it's a pretty good deal with the 15% voucher, be aware it's still going to cost you a lot - as you'll also need the following items:

  • A Japanese SCART (JP21) to SCART adapter pigtail cable (e.g. this or this)
  • A SCART switch if you want to have multiple consoles connected at the same time. I use the bandridge performance switch, but as these are getting hard to find, another option is to wait for the gscartsw, which RetroRGB will offer hopefully soon. You'll also need a scart to scart cable to go from the switch to the pigtail.
  • RGB cables for your consoles (SCART ended) for the best result (ebay - remember to get PAL cables if applicable).

Or you could just get an old CRT TV that supports RGB - but who has the space for that? Or emulate I guess…

  • +1 Good effort finding this

  • +1 for the description.

  • I have one of these and I must say, they're awesome. They take a lot of configuring to get right and that may include adjusting colour and gamma settings on your hdtv, but once you get it right, it's just awesome.

Really good price for this item too considering I paid ~$460 a couple of months ago. They hold their value well as they're arguably the best option for hooking up your old consoles to an HDTV. By all means, you can just use composite (yellow, white and red cable) but it will look terrible.

    • i thought these were 100v… or are they dual voltage?

      • You just supply your own DC adapter using the appropriate voltage. Another cost - but you may have one around already.

wouldn't it be cheaper to use an android media player/tablet with an emulator? actually that is what I use with a wireless ps3 controller..

it is for people who like to use the actual hardware, i myself do both. I emulate pinball, as it would upset the 'trouble and strife' if i have 30 pinball machines…

Not the same thing, some people want to be playing with the original cartridges and controllers. Although quite frankly, if it's not on an old CRT, what's the point.

i own all the hardware but use an emulator instead… my friend has a usb n64 controller that works just as a normal one. i just find it hard to understand why one would pay $380 for this

        • Why own the hardware if it's going to look bad? Plus, if you got tired of it you could sell for almost the purchase price even many years later.

        • @gringo:

i didn't buy any of it recently, mostly at release and just never bothered to get rid of it (most still works perfectly)

        • @storyteller:

But that's the thing - if you don't use the consoles, there is no point in having them - they are just clutter.

I have mine all setup so having them on and switched between is only a couple of buttons away. Modern flash carts are available for most consoles also.

It's more costly than emulation true, but it's a one time purchase that will revive many consoles to usefulness at once.

It is much much easier and cheaper to convert to VGA and most larger TV's have a VGA port $69US http://www.goldenshop.com.hk/AI-trad/Misc_htm/m_megavga.htm

    • There are plenty of bad solutions out there - the framemeister is the rolls royce solution (and costs accordingly).

      • 5% Better Quality for 4 times the price, I now use the upscaler in my amp and the results are near identical.

        • Guess this deal isn't for you then - but for those who are interested, it's cheaper than the usual price.

  • I just want to get my dreamcast looking right…

VGA to HDMI (at least the adaptor I used) was not good.

toro + a framemeister will get you there

I actually just use a TV with VGA input for my DC - but yeah most don't have them these days

      • Wow.. thanks for the link.. but I don't understand!

        • Well this is a bit of a hardcore user solution - so perhaps not what you are after.

Basically, this replaces your VGA box - then you plug it thru the framemeister and play with some settings for the best result.

  • Thanks

  • I'm guessing for even older consoles (original NES), you'll need to physically mod so it can get RGB support since the NES doesn't even support S-Video.
