    • Thank you for adding the link as I was not able to add it for some reason.

  • Isn't the Virgin AMEX deal still on? 110k points plus 1 point per dollar spent, 1 included domestic return flight, but $349 annual fee. Way better deal IMO.

    • +1

Better deal if you want virgin points maybe?

      • Virgin points can be used on Singapore Airlines. So still a good deal IMHO.

    • That's now how most of us accumulators work. We'll gladly take the Amex deal if we're eligible, but maybe we're not, or, maybe already got that deal, and looking for more.

While Velocity points are more valuable at a lower level, they're hard to get for free (Amex deal being a glaring exception). Qantas points become more valuable the more you accumulate (Where a $20k return first class flight costs 3 times the points of an economy ticket, for the same taxes. And, most importantly, every bank has been giving them away for the past two years.

Go back two years, I had around 60k Qantas points.

I've now got 460k. Not gonna stop while they're being given away so freely, that's for sure.

      • Qantas points are far less valuable than Virgin points at every level….

Taxes on velocity fares are almost always a fraction of what they cost with Qantas. As well as this, the amount of points it takes to get a business class seat with Qantas is almost always more than what it costs with Velocity.

        • +1

Except that they're far harder to accumulate, as I stated. And I'm also not sure how easy it is to get business fares for points with Velocity. I know for a fact international upgrades are not allowed if you're a base level frequent flyer.

But considering you can get Qantas points for free, they are much better value for money.

  • $2,500 in 3 month min spend.

    • Thanks, Coley. Just updated it accordinlgy!

  • "This promotion does not apply to existing Bankwest credit card customers who upgrade or vary their existing credit card."

What about existing Bankwest customers who have never had a Bankwest credit card? I've got a couple of dormant savings accounts with them. Will probably give them a call to check.

    • +1

Yes, no problem. I did that earlier this year, even though I've had other credit cards with them in past.

      • Thanks. Also confirmed Yes when I did an online chat and asked the question.

  • I guess Zero Platinum customers aren't eligible then? :(

    • Best to cancel, then sign up. Similar to what I did (I cancelled a month before promo started)

      • Hmm. I don't see a 12 month requirement like some other banks, so I may just do this after my overseas trip this month.

  • Ok so i'm a little new to this points accumulation business. I couldn't see anything saying the annual fee was waved in the first year… am i essentially spending $160 for the points?

    • Yes, you're right. It seems Bankwest don't waive the annual fee:(

    • This one is for hardcore collectors. Once you're over 200k, points become very valuable.

  • do Qantas FF point expire?
if i keep earning points does that mean they will never expire?

    • +1

So long as you have account activity, I think it's very 18 months.

    • +1

      Yes, you are right.

      From Qantas website,

      As of 1 July 2010:
◾Your points won't expire as long as you keep your account active by earning or using points at least once every 18 months, rather than every three years.

I found that the online application process was a bit tricky and received an automatic decline within a few seconds of pulling the trigger.

Call up and go through with the helpful staff as I did for a prompt reassessment and approval.

    • +1

Yes, their staff will rearrange everything to get your approval.

    • Did you just call up their call centre or did you go via customer retention team?

      • +1

I'm an existing home loan customer so I simply stated that I believed the automated decline to be incorrect and that I wished for someone to look over the application with an actual pair of eyes.
After being transferred to the correct department it took a few minutes to rejig and approve.
Apparently I had made an error online which is why my decline was instant.
