D-Link DUB-1312 USB3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter: $29 at MSY ($27.55 Officeworks Pricematch)

90

I have read Ozbargain for few years, but it is my first time to post. I hope it is OK.

I have a Surface Pro 3, which does not have LAN port. Microsoft has a USB to gigabit LAN adaptor, costing about $40.
MSY deal of the day D-link one for $29. Cheapest price from Staticice is $35. However I just bought one from OW pricematch 5% less ($27.55).

I know zero about these, but wouldn't it make more sense to buy one of these? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-3-0-to-Gigabit-RJ45-Ethernet-…

    • branded vs unbranded. maybe the dlink is better, maybe its not

I've got this exact model of Ethernet Adapter as well as a throw-away $10 dollar, no-name brand one too.
The difference between the two seems to be that the D-Link delivers consistent throughput whereas the cheapie Ethernet Adapter just gives up and slows down for no obvious reason at times. Even where all other factors are constant; i.e. on a LAN copying the exact same file from the server on the exact same client (in that case an Ultrabook).

Under the Device Manager, the D-Link Adapter also has a far more fully-fledged driver suite with plenty of Wake-on-LAN, Duplex/Speed, Frame options whereas the budget Adapter just has a dozen or so configurable settings.

The DUB-1312 also has compatible drivers for Windows/Mac/Linux and they have been updated about 3 times in the past if I recall correctly.

The generic adapters typically install generic Windows Ethernet drivers, which are not well optimised for speed or stability.

I have the branded and unbranded ones.
This kind of adapter (USB3.0 -> Gigabit Ethernet) is using a lot of CPU resources -> making laptops unusually hot after long use.
I wouldnt recommend it unless you really really need to use ethernet cable.

I was lucky picked a brand new dell one on ebay for $10 which worked on the microsoft surface while ago. just have to hunt and wait for those bargains
I agree no name brand can be hit and miss. I picked up yum cha wireless usb and it was dodgy. Another one was ok
