If all you want is a phone then you can pick up one for like $15 from your local supermarket.
You forgot to add GST, since this is over $1000 you get slugged with it.

It has always been the law for over $1000. What they were trying to change was lowering that threshold below $1000 or removing it alltogether.

Plus, no local Apple Australia one year warranty, and no 'out-of-warranty' replacement support, and no protection under Australian Consumer Guarantee which would have been for at least two years.
One has to balance the pros (saving a little money) against the cons (loss of warranty etc.).
