  • Hi rep, do these sale fares apply to trips with a stopover in Hong Kong or does it have to be fly-thru? Thanks.

Edit: The multi-city booking page is displaying this error:

Due to internal system error, you are unable to proceed further with this booking. Please close all open browser windows and try again."

    • Works now with different dates. Looks like prices are marginally higher e.g. AUD 806.25 for Sydney -> Tokyo stopping in Hong Kong in April.

  • Good deals. I booked too early with Singapore Airlines Sale to Japan. Damn it. Would have saved over $1K if I waited for Cathay special.

  • Good prices here, esp. to China and Japan. Though should add Cathay Pacific to the title.

    • Added to title.

  • I hope "Taste Asia" fare doesn't involve flame on the wing :P

  • Damn it. January tickets are now $2000. Looks like no holidays for me

  • Price match via flightcentre.
Use qff points to deduct cost of airfare.

Print pdf quote that shows date and price.
    Email to flightcentre.

    ***why did i get negged?
I am 99% sure this method works to pricematch with flightcentre.

    "Lowest airfares guaranteed!!"

    • I used CBA points on flightcentre match.
      Sorry for confusion.

      (Vacation Mode)

    • Unless fares change on the competitors website, they actually check

    • Flight Centre always check the prices - the staff have to email a screenshot to the supplier.

  • Is this better or the Qantas better earlier months before?

Qantas should hav a higher baggage allowance than Cathay.
      Cathay is 23kgs

      • Cathay is 20kgs..
in my case for a family of 3, we get 90kgs with Qantas and 60kgs with Cathay…

        • +2

          Really?
I am ozbargaining from Japan now.
          Shinkansen as we speak.

Docomo simcard is awesome thanks to travelsimsdirect.com

I have 23kgs on this trip.

I believe it is 20kgs + 3kg allowance for checkin.

          @chinezejew:

I just came back from the last CX deal, we went to Osaka via HK, and stopover HK on the way back

And yes I seconded that the Docomo simcard from TSD was really good.

We did had a look at our Eticket and it stated 20kg
At the checkin counter they explained (in Cantonese, yes I understand it) it is 20kg.
She saw us with a 3 year old so gave us extra 6kgs… but we were still over it… have to use some old asia miles pts to claim extra 10kg.

      • Just booked this special, it said baggage 30kgs

    • If your with QFF, better points and Status Credits flying Qantas then Cathay.

      • Apologies… im in holiday mode.

I used my CBA awards points on this trip.

        Qff is qantas.
Cba award points to flightcentre deduction.

I've flown recently on both carriers. Here's a quick comparison (economy class):

      1. Baggage limit: Cathay - 20kg; Qantas - 30kg
      2. Wine & beer: Qantas wins hands down; Cathay only had VB :(
      3. Food: both are horrible
      4. Cathay seems to be more punctual (according to my unscientific sample size)
      5. Entertainment: both are pretty good; Qantas probably have a better selection (love the HBO channel); Cathay have a single-prong headset socket so you can use your own without an adapter
      6. Flight attendants: Cathay - all 20-something slim females; Qantas - all genders, ages, shapes and sizes; but the service from both carriers is equally friendly

Basically they're both fine but the baggage limit is the "make or break" factor for me.

      • +1

Love the comparison on Flight Attendants.

        • I like using the comparison of old rain Forrest scenery to a tulip farm lol.

        • hahaha same here love it, and it's so true too lol

      • No contest at all…

      • Cathay's IFE seems to be a lot faster than the Qantas IFE system. I've always found the Qantas ones to be laggy :(

  • +6

Hate Cathay Pacific promotion… they put the lowest fare A$598 but probably only 5% dates (most likely couldnt find it) available for that fare and 95% other dates are much expensive

last Qantas $599 promotion have like 80% of the fare for $599 and 20% fare higher and special dates

    • Cool that confirms Qantas is better. But Cathay has better service though, and longer dates 11 Jan - 31 Aug 2016

      only 5% that's nuts

      • +2

Qantas specials always tend to be offpeak and not during the school holidays. Cathay promotion this time round is really good as you can get cheap airfares during school holidays.

Also if you search for Perth to Shanghai which is the $598 promo during offpeak you can find flights at that price. During April school holidy its slightly higher and at least still at promotion prices unlike Qantas.

  • I've flown on CP before (free tickets - friend often had too many flights that could not be used) & enjoyed the service.

Got a Jetstar flight booked to Japan during Cherry Blossom season (April), so looked up similar dates out of curiosity… 9 times the price :-(
At least the saving will comfort me while I go without on Jetstar.

Still, it is a good deal.

  • Will it work for one-way fares?

Edit: Apparently not. HKG-BNE one way came up as over $8000, but then I realised that is probably HKD so that's about $1500 AUD. But a return fare on the same date was $667 AUD

  • Not impressed with Cathay service especially on transferring flights. Its so messy and inconsiderate and i lodged complaint but never heard anything. Never again i will fly with them again.

    • I think they are fine cept when their pilots threaten to strike

    • You have to provide more details.
Were you transferring to another airline?
Was it on the same ticket?

Millions of people travel and a large percent of them would transfer…

    • Never had that experience and for me, Cathay has always been my preference if available when travelling to Asia.

  • Hey rep, my MPC anniversary is in July and the new "enhanced" MPC kicks in April next year. How is my status gonna be calculated? Using the new or old rules? Don't want to clock enough miles for GO then being told I'm only qualified for pleb silver. Thanks.

    • Nobody home?

      • +2

        It's ok, nobody cares.

  • bought one return ticket, just $601. Thanks a lot!!!

  • thanks for posting the deal. whole family trip sorted paying about half of the price I was prepared to pay.

  • Cannot find fares for $600… says on main page Melb - Nanjing for $605. However when tried to book 11/01 - 25/01 it came back as $2000….

    • +1

Its from and not for. So depending on the dates you have selected it might be more. For example, if you look around May, you will find some flights at $601.

  • $663 from Sydney to HK. Still a good price - bought, thanks!

  • Once flew on Cathay to Japan and on the leg from Hong Kong we had thick smoke appear in the cabin, the look on everyone's faces was obviously one of fear.

Not long after they returned us to HK to exchange the aircraft but once landed the ground staff refused to discuss what had happened.

Poor customer service on their part, still leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I think of this airline.

    • Why would you expect them to explain to you instantly when they probably don't know enough as soon as you land.

You will probably get the same answer from all airlines… a technical fault.
It was probably someone smoking in the toilets and throwing cig in the trash can lighting up papers.
Happens more often than you think.

Any airline would have done the same.

      • The incident occurred whilst we were gaining altitude shortly after take-off.

When your delayed for hours on the ground as a result of an in-flight malfunction its only reasonable as a paying customer I would receive a proper explanation.

I doubt all airlines would have handled it the same and up until that point I would have expected better from CX.

Even though your opinion is welcomed, you are only making presumptions when I was one of many people on-board that day actually fearing for my life.

There was no restitution for loss of time or anyone to assigned to meet with the passengers to answer questions. When I approached the customer service desk I was shrugged off like it never happened.

All in all a poor way to treat a potential return customer and as a consequence I haven't purchased a ticket with them since.

        • It may be bleed air contamination from the engines.

  • question for those who has flew with CX recently, do they still have those horrible non-reclineable seats?

specifically, the Sydney - Hong Kong route

used to be a big CX fan until those seats came along, haven't flew with them for like 5+ years since……..

    thx

    • +1

Those seats suck balls, they still had them around 3 years ago, I asked a flight attendant friend more recently and apparently its been phased out, but haven't flown Cathay recently so would be good if anyone else can confirm (Sydney - HK route as well)

    • Yep those seats suck!
Most of them are gone. There's still few planes with those old seats, but you will be extremely unlikely if you get them.
Most of the planes on SYD-HKG are newer and should be safe unless there was a sudden airplane swap.

    • The newer is only doing half recline/half slide down. It's definitely better than the no recline one, but it is still kinda sucks

  • sux that theres no perth to fuzhou :'(

  • Melb-HKG-Melb mid March $649. Same dates, but overnight flights $827…hummmm

  • Easter period doesnt seem to be included. Tried melbourne tokyo return is 1300

    • I just booked SYD-HKG for the Easter period. $664.38 pp.

Anyone know if you can use the 72 Hour Free Transit Visa with this deal? I'm look at going Mel-HKG-CAN-HKG-MEL with a stop over in HK on the way home only. Tripadvisor has this "- You must be in transit to a third country (you may not return to the same country as the one that you came from);" as a condition. Will that get me on a technicality as I will be transiting in HKG on my way to CAN but will be flying back to HKG after my 2 day stay in CAN?

    • Uhmm… I know this is not answering your question but you do realise hongkong to guang zhou is only 120km?

      • Yes, but the fare going to CAN is cheaper than the fare going HK alone. Anyway I went to my usual TA and they advised that I would require a visa unless I was flying directly from MEL to CAN and then onto HK.

  • Booked SYD-HKG, thanks OP!

  • Is $663.78 the cheapest price at the moment for Sydney - Hong Kong (Return)??? Or even from the beginning of the sale??

I think the the "check-in baggage allowance" is a deal breaker, only 20kg. A cheap and empty luggage can weight up to 7kg itself.

  • For those struggling to find availability, here are some dates I've found departing from Melbourne:
    To Tokyo (NRT)
    March 1st/2nd/3rd to March 14/15/16 = $715.72
    April 12/13/14/15/16/17/18 to 25/26/27/28, also 4th to the 11/12/13 = $770.72
    May 1/2/3/4/5/6 to 13/15/16/17/18/19 = $715.72
    June 1/2/3/4/ to 12/13/14/15/16 = $715.72

    To Tokyo (HND)
Has similar if not better dates.

  • for anyone who is concerned re. "only" 20kg allowed for checked-in baggage, my advice is to post it via surface mail (yes takes about 1mth but it's heaps cheaper than paying for the extra baggage allowance)!

    • Or just travel lighter.

Lugging around 20kg + 7kg per person carry on on a holiday can really spoil it, may cost more as you need to catch taxis etc. Often cheaper to buy some things after you arrive.

After lugging 25kg around the UK 10 years ago - swearing at my bag, I now only carry on for almost all flights. No more checking in bag or waiting around at end of flight watching bags go round, or worrying bag may not be on plane… A much happier traveller for that change.

If you must fly with a bag in the hold, ensure it is light so it does not take up much of your allowance, & you aren't carrying anything 'just in case I need it'.

      Just an idea.

      • +1

I know what u mean re. only carrying stuff you need, however I was referring to those who like to shop overseas. In which case you would be better off shipping those stuff back by surface mail :) but I was only talking about from HK tho…as the postage is reasonable

        • Good idea. I've posted back from China very cheap. Far better than lugging it back yourself. And a month or so later there is a nice surprise package.

Shipping back (from cheap locations) nicely compliments travelling light :-)

It's a good idea to photograph the contents, just in case.

        • @Infidel: hahah i know about the surprise package, cos sometimes u buy so much crap and forget what you bought :)

  • Hey guys, I tried to book SYdney to Tokyo Narita return on dates 18th January 2016 to 25 January 2016 but the prices come up as 1800 dollars, how do i get prices around 750 dollars ?

    • School holidays…good luck finding cheap prices.
