  • Ok shipping was $90US. for me…

      ¡Ay, caramba!

$91 USD = $130 AUD shipping, grand total $493 delivered.

Curiosity got the better of me so here is a local comparative:
PCCG Barebone $299 + 4GB RAM $39 + $135 for the Windows 10 License = $473 (actually I forgot the 32GB eMMC but in reality you'd want to run a bigger SSD anyway)

Plus I'd personally get a Win 10 license from Reddit (not everyones cup of tea) for $35 making that price $373 without SSD.

I think after all this hassle though, I'd get the i3 or i5 model.

in reality you'd want to run a bigger SSD anyway

I disagree. 32GB is plenty for OS and software (even using Windows). Use the 2.5" slot for a large magnetic drive, to hold your photo/movie/pr0n collection.

        • Depends on what you wanna do with the computer. 32GB isn't enough for any serious work/entertainment, as Windows 10 itself will take up 10-15GB alone. You'd wanna put important programs on an SSD such as Office or Adobe stuff, and they can eat up like 20GB.

        • @clse945111: And this computer isn't powerful enough for any serious work/entertainment.

It's an internet browser, document maker and content player.

        • @tantryl: You'd be surprised, Office and Photoshop etc can easily run on low end CPU if bundled with an SSD. My 3yo $200 celeron laptop does those just fine (not the best experience but usable), I'm not talking about video editing and 3D rendering etc.
It's not the era of low end CPUs being useless anymore.

        • "I disagree. 32GB is plenty for OS and software (even using Windows)."

Definitely no way in hell 32GB is enough for Windows 10. my windir sits at 26GB now. So 32GB goneski after using your pc for little while, after quite a few big updates. Even the 64gb drives eventually fill up. 128GB will get you by for some time but if ya going to Nuc it I would personally start with the 240-256gb ssd drives which only set you back roughly $100-130 which is really cheap. SSD's are going down in price really fast.

        • @atleeit: I've had Win10 since release and my Win dir is 15.2GB on disk.

    • You can try asking Amazon support, I wanted to buy something last time that had ~28us shipping and they dropped it down to 6us.

      • +1

But it's sold via Technology Galaxy not directly from Amazon, so I'm not sure Amazon can help in this case? Otherwise I'd absolutely agree, $90 USD is insane for a little NUC.

  • +4

For about the same price you get a i5 version + HD6000 without anything else, that is much better than Pentium N3700 + HD Graphics though, but 256GB SSD and 4GB RAM will cost roughly $150 (which is much better than 32GB + 2GB).
Otherwise i3 version locally can be around the same price after adding in SSD and RAM.
Both no OS though if that's important to you.

If your going to get one of these then you may be better off with a chromebox, chromebase or any of the ChromeOS devices.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromebox
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrome_OS

You dont waste time and effort dealing with all things Windows. With ChromeOS, you just get stuff done.

    • Interesting concept.

But with a decent spec NUC would there be much benefit over say Windows 10? I know one is much more bloated but decent CPU, 8GB RAM…

I guess I should try ChromeOS sometime.

      • ChromeOS are a breeze to use because there is nothing to do other click on the browser and way you go. It takes a little adjustment because we are all used to the way windows works (or Apple, however i've never used apple).

Many of them come with low ssd space which is meant to be used as a temp storage, so you use google drive as your main, full time storage. No worries about running your websites, photo editing done online… everything is done online and cloud services are increasing heaps.

If your a gamer or need specialty software then ChromeOS is not for you.

Best move I ever made 2 years ago.

    • ChromeOS is definitely low maintenance - I got one for a family member, replacing Windows, and tech support calls have dropped to almost nothing.

But I think this deal is for people who specifically want windows, and something more powerful than just a media player.
You sound like the trolls in the Apple deals.

      • Yeh just throwing it out there. People are so stuck on windows and they are not really keen to change, or willing to look at something different even though it could suit them better. We tend to stick with what we know don't we. And that's fine.

  • At this price , why not get a previous gen laptop on deal ( like one of the Toshibas on clearance with more RAM , more hard drive and better processor) and HDMI that to the TV and set the TV as the main display ( you can hide the laptop using many creative ideas ) and if there is a need ever , use the laptop on its own

Sometime this NUC cost is absurd .

    • Doing a lot of travel at the moment I've been repeatedly tempted to buy a NUC, strap it on the back of my 24" screen and I have a powerful system, if I got an i5, for work purposes it'll be almost as good as my i7 desktop back home.

I have a laptop which I already bring but when working I really miss the bigger screen real estate. I guess alternatively I could spend nothing and just bring the 24" monitor and connect to the laptop. But the laptop is a N2840 Celeron, so even with SSD and 8GB it's a bit sluggish.

1st world problem, what to do?? :) Not really interested in a bigger laptop so maybe the NUC is the way to go for me.

      • The reasons sound fair mate , but I'd still reccommend getting a lappie with enough juice than the NUC (the cost difference is not much for an i5 ) - that way you need not bring the N2840 laptop along with you

With reduced heft or weight , You would be closer to becoming an agile ninja :)

        • +1

I think you're logic is starting to sink in. Probably is the way I need to go. I'll have a look and see what I can find. At the moment I'm a clumsy hippo, becoming an agile ninja sure sounds good!

      • Wow, thats dedication.

Maybe something like this? The CPU is a fraction of the performance but its at least an all in one package…

        http://doutlet.xyz/Devices/DeviceInspector.aspx?DeviceID=DFO…

(disclaimer: I run that site, the entire list of availible PC's is here at the DELL outlet: http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…. There's also some higher specced AIO machines that might tickle your fancy, albeit they are higher priced (I think one with an i7 is like, $1200), but your NUC + screen idea sounds painful to me (not that you have to get some random dude on the interwebs to approve your PC plans lol)).

        • No, you're right. Screen + NUC is painful. Be it random or someone I know, I'm sure the advice and opinion would be the same :)

I'd forgotten about the AIO systems, though really it's still the same footprint as the monitor isn't it…

Also had forgotten about Dell's outlet (bought some stuff there years ago) so I'll keep my eye on that one.

Your site (first link) didn't work for me for some reason?

        • @Click_It:

Bizzarely, the server just turned itself off. Awkward.

Booting that sucker back up now!

    • Thanks, hopefully these will be discounted heavily by someone locally. It's the perfect HTPC.
