Would you be able to utilise the SteamDeck's sleep function if you installed SteamOS on this? Just curious since for me, that was the SteamDeck's biggest selling point, being able to just wake from sleep and play.

    • +33

Now here's a man with his priorities in order. A morning game sesh followed by tacos. Is there any better way to start the day?

      • +8

Ahaha… try a soft shell taco with eggs, mince and chorizo with your sauce of choice… Tacos 4 Breakfast is really the way to go…

    • +4

Yes. And it's not limited to SteamOS. I have Bazzite running on a Rog Ally; the sleep function works exactly the same as on my Steam Deck.

      • That's actually good to know!

  • +4

Might want to check reviews before buying https://youtu.be/gVdOkbJ9Npo

    • +3

There are plenty of other videos that go the other way…

      • -6

        totally not paid reviews, right?

      • I don't know if they are paid or not. You have to make up your own mind.

Look at this one (which was a loaned device, don't know if it was paid…). Particularly watch the conclusion from about 36:00. He says the if all his other handheld gaming devices disappeared tomorrow, he would buy this one.

        • +6

Link is misrepresentative of this deal. That's for a Z1 Extreme (8 cores 16 threads, RDNA3 GPU), this deal is for Z2 Go (4 cores 8 threads, RDNA 2 GPU).

          • +2

            @Alzori: Oops, point taken.

However the selling points are far from just the processor. He goes into depth about the screen, ergonomics, controls.

But make up your own mind was my original point. Don't just look at one negative video.

  • +2

    just pulled the trigger

    100% dont need it lol

    • -2

You should've gone for the legion go z1 extreme chief…its a better device

      • too big i reckon i returned mine

      • i did it because its very cheap. I already have a decent gaming pc

        • The Z1 was only like $40 more for a more powerful system

    • This is the way.

  • +1

Love to know the price of the new ROG XBOX Ally X as it keen for it but I think it’s gonna be too expensive and kill itself doing that

    • +4

i reckon it's going to be close to $2k

      maybe $1600 on sale

      • If that’s true no one is gonna buy it

I was hoping Xbox would sell it at a lower price to get people buying it

        • +1

i think you will be surprised. hardware is constantly costing more and more, and people are still paying it.

i'm not saying it will sell out, but it would still make sales at that price point. Keep in mind i see this upcoming xbox handheld as a trial to test the market.

I also can't see xbox willingly run at a loss on the sale of the console as their going to allow people to install other store fronts on the console (steam, epic, GOG, etc). If their open to installing other store fronts so easily then their unlikely going to depend on ongoing software/subscriptions after the sale of the console to turn a loss into a profit.

          • @whitepuma: I read that Xbox has canceled their handheld that they were thinking about making

            • +2

@Twisty: I really hope handhelds are the way of the future. Sure, graphics will take a hit but being able to play on the big screen at home while gaming handheld when you're out is amazing.

Yes, there are gaming laptops, but you can't just whip out a gaming laptop and controller on a plane.

I guess you could, but it would be huge and weird. Like my ex-housemate.

Z2 Go. I don’t understand why they even bothered with this chip, besides the price point. Just be aware of that before pulling the trigger.

    • WTF it's slower than the Z1 extreme. Why did they make a worse version?

      • +1

if your only metric is performance….then yes, the z1e is better.

but the z2go still has it's benefits (which is why they would make a "worse" version)

        some of those benefits include:
        - improved power efficiency
        - lower thermal output (which can help the device be both more power efficient and more compact)
        - cost…..it's a cheaper chip. You would likely find that if the go S had the z1e (or higher performance chip), it wouldn't be selling for the price range it is now.

        • +1

I mean yeah, performance is the only metric I care about.

          • +12

@Buyingcrap: then if that's the only metric you care about you shouldn't be getting a gaming handheld, you should be building a gaming pc.

All you're really identifying is that this isn't the product for you….not that it's a worse product.

            • -2

@whitepuma: I have a gaming PC and an ROG Ally Z1E. Looking to upgrade the Ally, for more performance.

              • @Buyingcrap: If your needing to upgrade the z1e for performance reasons then I got bad news for you …your going to be waiting a while, your not going to see any massive leaps in performance in handhelds for a couple of years. Even the new Xbox rog handheld isn't meant to have a massive performance jump over the current stuff.

                • -1

@whitepuma: Nah the Ally X is a substantial bump. Probably more due to the extra ram but it does perform much better.

                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vBzTDvjKiQ

                  • +1

@Buyingcrap: Then get the Ally x?

It also costs nearly double as much as the OP deal.

Like I said earlier, All you're really identifying is that this isn't the product for you….not that it's a worse product

                    • -2

@whitepuma: It's literally worse. Technology is meant to move forwards not backwards. This is a heap of shit.

                      • +1

@Buyingcrap: it's only worse on the performance metric that you're looking at.

If performance is everything, then using your logic there should be no market for laptops, handheld gaming systems, mobile phones etc as a gaming pc currently out performs all of them.

                        Also using your logic
When they release a new generation of GPU's they shouldn't release any gpu that doesn't completely surpass the previous generations best performer.
                        i.e.the RTX 5080, 5070, 5070ti, 5060, 5060ti shouldn't exist because the rtx 4090 outperforms them all.

Technology can still move forward without moving forward on every individual metric.

                      • @Buyingcrap: If this is a heap of shit, you should buy it

  • +3

Just make sure you know what you are getting. https://au.pcmag.com/gaming-1/110361/lenovo-legion-go-s

This is the slower end of Z2 series.

  • This is about the same price of a Nintendo Switch 2.
Which one would you guys choose?

    • +4

This, get SteamOS on it and enjoy unlimited games…

    • I had that same choice a couple of weeks ago and grabbed the $599 zotac zone from a previous deal. Great experience with bazzite and I've been playing a mix of backlogged titles, new pickups from the steam sale (a handful for less than the price of Mario kart world) and older emulated titles.

If you just want the easiest and best experience playing modern Nintendo games, get a switch. Otherwise, I'd get the handheld. Just don't torture yourself by using windows on it.

    • -2

None of the Nintendo games have kept me playing over and over.

Played botw 3/4ths of the way and got bored
I didnt even get through 1/4th of Totk before I got bored, it just felt like a botw mod.

Pc handheld has more utility, you can stream your pc at home if you got a decent rig. 1440p 120hz easy. Been contemplating on getting a handheld for home use but probably not worth it vs a tab s8 ultra for toilet streaming.

Id go windows just because Nintendo games are boring

This is just my personal experince.
Ive had the msi claw, steamdeck and this.
This is my go to since the release of steamos for it. It just runs well and improves the hardware capabilities. Standby handles much better. Few bugs still as its relativley new but it runs most games well enough. I dont mind to tinker if i need to so its not been too much of a problem like the rgb around the thumb sticks werent working, easy fix and eventually steam os will have it fixed included in an update..
Currently playing farcry6 on it, since it went on steam sale. Its consitent and handles well. Compared to my steamdeck its definitely better, esp with the 120hz screen. Battery life is better but not ground breaking.
I prefer it to my msi claw due to a nicer screen size, and it runs more like a console which i kinda hate about windows being a full blown os. Like i dont need linked in here.. or anywhere. Why do i need co pilot and MS Office? No this is a hand held.. the bloat is real and doesnt help.
My steam deck still pretty sweet. No complaints. Ive had some good hours on it but now its just getting a bit old. Even though it still handles really well, i just find the legion way smoother now. And ergonomically it just feels better in my hands. Anyways i like it, it needs a bit of tinkering atm, but im sure it get more updates from steamos which will make it even better. Games arent going to run at 4k ultra high settings so set your expectations. These are handhelds and this is priced reasonably well comparingly.

I’ve had mine since the last eBay deal, and I love it. I immediately installed steamOS on it and it behaves exactly like you’d expect, like a console. Sleep/wake is excellent and removes all the friction from its windows counterpart. Heroic launcher allows you to run Epic and other launchers too. I went in knowing this was the slightly weaker Z2 chip, also knowing that I wasn’t getting this to replace my main rig, but to play smaller games and the huge backlog of freebies I’ve amassed over the years. I’ve been having a blast playing through all the Steam World games again, and other indies like Lonely Mountains. I’ve also revisited games like GRID2 and the Bioshock series, all play well at above 100fps. The screen is big and very pleasing for an LCD with 120hz vrr (and I’m a huge OLED fan) and it just feels so nice in the hands. Overall it’s been one of the best tech purchases I’ve made lately, and at that price point it’s a no brainer. As others have said I’m keen to see how the Xbox ally X compares but I suspect the price will completely kill the value proposition. My Switch 2 is already gathering dust because of it. Definitely worth a look at this price!

  • Still waiting for Steamdeck 2, meanwhile got a switch 2

  • My GF wants a Switch (or Switch 2) after having played Mario Kart with friends.but Im not keen on paying $120 for switch games when theres a whole ass Steam library available if I get it set up for her. Is installing Steamos on a device like this a set and forget kinda thing? Or even Switch emulation to get Mario Kart running?

    • +3

Depending on the game, Switch emulation may not always be full speed.

There is also what she really wants to play. If she wants switch games (which you are unlikely to pay more than $99 for in the real world), a bigger, clunkier, experience will likely not be what she wants, and i suspect she will be much happier just with the Switch.

Even with Steam-OS these devices are nowhere near as set and forget and "it just works" as a console experience.

  • +1

So, is it better to buy this version and put on Steamos, than buy the equivalent Steamos version for $300+ more? i.e. Steamos should run the same on both once installed on this Windows version?

    • +1

Yeah, at this price point I think so. Bigger screen (probably as good as an OLED screen). The RRP didn't make sense at all

  • Anyone know why the part number on this is different to the one used in normal retail stores? (83L3000SAU)

Officeworks won't price beat because of the part number differing

  • +1

Anyone know if we are getting the z1e version in Australia? Thanks
