[SOLD OUT] MTV Digital Set Top Box Standard Definition - $19.95 + $6.95 Delivery

250

First time submitting a deal this looks pretty good to me for entry level into digital tv :)

Get with the times and transform your analogue TV into a capable digital TV viewer with an MTV set top box. When I hear MTV, Beavis and Butthead spring to mind, but don’t let those fools sidetrack you for long. There’s too much else to think about, like the Program Guide and Channel Preview function, as well as Program Scheduling and of course, a Parental Locking functio It connects to your analogue TV with composite video cables, and it also comes with a fully functional remote control. All you have to do is connect to your TV and you have full access to all standard def TV channels. No more dodgy reception, now you can see crystal clear sharp digital picture. At $19.95, this Catch is… well, a pretty good Catch!

  • Electronic program guide
  • Favourite channel listing
  • Program scheduling

  • Does anyone know which channels you can watch with this? Are SBS2, Go and such SD or HD?

  • +1

    ABC1
    ABC2
    ABC3
    SBS1
    SBS2
    TEN
    Seven
    Nine
    GO!
    7TWO
    ONE Digital

All can be watched on this receiver

    • I didn't know you could get so many channels with SD set-top box, wish I hadn't bought my HD one now.

  • They are all SD …. essentially all HD channel also have an equivalent SD channel(at the moment at least), with the possible exception of OneHD which broadcasts in only HD in some regional centres.

  • be wary of MTV brand… most MTV electronics sold at Coles are returned…

    • +2

Bought 2 MTV sd settop boxes 3 years ago from Coles, back then about $40 on sale, still working very well . I also like they have actual Power button at the front(not sure about this new model) , so that you can turn it off, not keeping it standby all the time (which could burn down your house!).
I also have a MTV DVD player about 1 year ago, still going strong.

    • Yeah i've had MTV electronics for 3-4yrs, never had issues with them

    • +2

"most MTV electronics sold at Coles are returned"

Proof? While no one said it's as good as a "name" brand (although it may be). It's probably good enough for most people - esp at this price point.

      • Isn't "point" redundant?

        • -1

Not really as my point was that in the low price bracket people aren't expecting brand name reliability. If it works as expected for at least the warranty period that's fine.

          • @daydream: ha, No, you made a valid point, I was talking about the word point in "price point".

      • +2

the local coles here said there was about 25% of MTV gear brought back. Coles had some DVD recorders MTV brand a few months ago, Coles here sold 4, had 3 returned

      • proof? just that i worked at coles for 5 years

        • I knew a dept. manager at Coles that swore against MTV products simply because of the high failure rate. She had no reason to lie about it, she was just frustrated with the amount of returns they were getting.

If I needed a SD STB I'd probably still buy this simply because of how cheap they are. Well not really, I'd probably buy a HD one because they're not that much more either.

          • +1

@cyssero: I have a feeling it's probably more of a high DOA rate, because cheap stuff like this doesn't get the QA testing it deserves.

If you get a unit that works out of the box, it probably last you a while..

  • can i watch tv by using this and lcd monitor?

    • Assuming your ports match up (ie, not if you just have a vga or dvi port - adapters are available in some cases) but you still need to get the audio (some monitors have speakers and an input but most don't).

      A device like this makes things easier for what you want to do;
      http://www.comprousa.com/en/product/w800f/w800f.html

    • Not readily, the STB only has component/composite output.

    • We don't know what inputs your monitor accepts :s

    • You can get a Component -> VGA cable and it will work. Still need speakers though (connect to line input).

    • +1

I'd have trouble reconciling buying monitor adaptors or a STB (particularly the c.$100 HD models) with these $499 42" HD plasmas floating about.

      • $499 42" Hd Plasmas? Where?

        • +1

read the main page, Vivo 42" plasmas

Most of them come with a HD receiver already!?

  • I've had one for a year or so and it's worked fine, sometimes emits a weird buzz through the TV but you get what you pay for I guess.

      • yer but its not $27, I'll wait for another cheapy.

        • The MTV SD STB's were $30 @ Coles IIRC…
