Hi folks,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Came across this while looking for a good price on the RedMi Note 2 - thought I would share it since it seems like a good deal.

Creating an account at Banggood and subscribing to their newsletters gives you some coupons, including $20USD off a minimum $200USD spend, or $10USD off a $100USD min spend. The coupons (or at least the coupons I ended up with in my account) expire 18 Dec 2015.

The 32GB Xiaomi RedMi Note 2 is currently $179.90USD on the site, so applying the $10 coupon gives a price of $238.07AUD shipped.

Alternatively you can add a few items to get the price over $200USD and use the $20 coupon to get a $28AUD discount. This is order I ended up with, which came to a total of $254.54 AUD.

  • 1 x Nillkin H+ Anti-Explosion Glass Screen Protector For Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 AU$12.74
  • 1 x NILLKIN Super Frosted Shield Protective Case For Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 AU$9.23
  • 1 x Soft TPU Silicone Gel Jelly Case Back Cover For Xiaomi Redmi Note2 AU$2.79
  • 1 x Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Dual 4G 5.5-inch 32GB MTK X10 2.2GHz Octa-core Smartphone AU$252.08
  • 1 x Anti-Burst 9H 0.3mm Tempered Glass Screen Protector Film Guard for Xiaomi Redmi Note2 AU$2.93
  • 1 x Soft TPU Silicone Gel Jelly Case Back Cover For Xiaomi Redmi Note2 AU$2.79

The recent Geekbuying deal came up to roughly $250AUD without the accessories, so this seems like a good price.

Looks like they ship from multiple warehouses and their system didn't want to let me apply the coupon code unless the total was over $200USD for all of the items shipped from the same warehouse. I struggled a little bit trying to find cheap items to get me over the line and ended up settling with an extra silicone gel case.

Shipping times are quoted as 7-25 business days, so keep this in mind if you are in a hurry.

Hope this helps someone out!

    Great first post. Thanks OP

  • Anyone know how these compare to the more well known newer phones? Looking for a cheap phone for my son (13) but he has to have the latest phone so he doesn't get bullied…. An iPhone 3gs or samsung junior or what ever doesnt cut it apparently.

    • +9

Please find out what kids are doing this bullying and ask their parents to take their phones (or maybe replace it with an old phone) until they learn that's not cool.

      • or replace it with a lump of coal

        • Ooooh, La Befana…

    • +5

getting your kid a new phone probably isn't the best solution.

    • +3

Nokia N-Gage - he'll be sidetalkin those bullies into the abyss with their fandangled wannabe 4G appenditure substitute extensions.

    • +3

People get bullied for a multitude of reasons. Giving in is not always the resolution.

    • he has to have the latest phone so he doesn't get bullied

Do your kid a favour and start getting him to fight back. Because that is pretty pathetic.

      • Really, violence…

If i was buying the latest phone, I would buy him an iPhone or Galaxy note, but im not, im looking for a cheap sensible phone that he likes. To which he is buying him self!

    • -5

The kid might become a laughing stock at school if you buy a Xiaomi for him/her.

  • Sadly, he refuses to take it to school as hes to embarrassed too. We have only lived in Australia for 11 months and hes found it hard to settle in, so kids being kids isn't helping. We now both work and we need to be able to get hold of him and visa vera. So if buying a phone hes happy with means we can contact him, i'd rather do it.

And, the 3GS is now broken and won't charge.

    • +4

This is a good phone for the price but if your main concern is bullying and you're not willing to address the bullying itself and just want to curtail it without engaging then the phone you probably need is a ~$1k Samsung or Apple phone.

      • Main concern is being able to get hold of him and him getting hold of us. But if hes not even going to take the phone to school in the first place….

        • +4

This is an interesting comment. When I was a kid you mainly did what you were told by your parents. Not being contactable is a big deal in my book, I think you should address that as an issue also. Make sure he understands how important it is that you can contact him. Not taking his phone because it's not cool would seriously not wash with most people, there should be consequences if he doesn't (and I don't mean getting a new high end phone)

As someone who buys a lot of technology for other less tech-knowledgeable people, it would sound to me (if I were to assume) that your 13 year old wants a new phone and will tell you anything to get one. Much higher likelihood of that happening than anyone getting bullied. It's not a slight on your kid, it's just how dependents learn to behave to get things. If he is coming from an iPhone he may be somewhat invested in the it's ecosystem also. Keep in mind also that if all his friends have smartphone he could be left out.

There are plenty of cheap Huawei and ZTE phones that will do the job just fine for 50 bucks, they have limited storage but still plenty if he isn't playing large games which you may not want anyway (see y550 or recent ZTE from Coles and you have Voda and Optus covered)

        • @Jackson

" your 13 year old wants a new phone and will tell you anything to get one"

          Well said

    • well this phone spec should be a lot better than phones that are in the similar price range
Xiaomi is a very popular and reputable brand in China, their branding is known for quality and at a cheap price.
Of course you cannot compare apple with orange.
If this is the budget that you would be happy to spend, then I think this phone will represent the best value in terms of spec.
Your son however may still get bullied as it is not an iPhone, and using a Chinese phone may be embarrassing.

      • Ironically, its the screen size which is the issue!

        • +2

It's got a big screen (the size of an iPhone 6 Plus) and is good value.

        • Thanks for the positive comment! few and far between here tonight!

        • +2

@DAN13L: All three of my replies were trying to be helpful. You were just looking for answers to questions you hadn't asked. You told us your kid was getting bullied for not having the latest phone and if this phone would solve that problem when all you wanted to ask was "Does this phone have a big screen and is it good value?".

        • -2

I was actually getting abuse for being a bad parent for buying him a phone so we can contact him as I should buy him a phone as thats giving in and I should make him fight for him self.

Its OK, I see how it works on Ozbargains and I will keep my opinions and questions to myself in future for fear of being essentially told im a bad parent.

The fact is, I wanted to know if the specs are similar as he is buying his own phone and has a limited budget.

        • +1

@DAN13L: put aside the bullying this phone is a good value phone but not the best and the latest. Likely kids at 13 year old without doing enough research on smart phones wont know the brand because it is only sold and distributed mainly in China and exported by private seller.

        • +4

          @DAN13L:

          Actual answer with no prejudice:

This is a good phone for the price. Possibly one of the best in terms of bang for buck.

But if your kid is getting bullied for what phone he has, it is pretty much guaranteed this phone will not help alleviate that.

        • +5

          @DAN13L:

The fact is, I wanted to know if the specs are similar as he is buying his own phone and has a limited budget.

But you mentioned NONE of that in your first post. The only reason I was able to answer your question on the third attempt was because I pieced clues together.

        • +4

@DAN13L: Also only ONE reply was about fighting back. The negative comment was the one that was few and far between. But you painted a group of people as doing that by saying positive comments were few and far between, which I fairly reasonably interpreted would include my earlier suggestions.

        • -5

I asked 'how do it compare' was I supposed to ask specific questions, like how many pixels does it have for people to be able to comment effectively?

The FACT is, people would rather judge than just answer the question. Perhaps its my mistake for saying 'bullied', I should have said 'take the mickey'

Now the keyboard warriors are trying to justify themselves.

        • +1

          @DAN13L:

I asked 'how do it compare'

No, you didn't. That's a straight up lie.

        • Anyone know how these compare to the more well known newer phones

        • +1

          @DAN13L:

Let him check out something like the Zenfone 2 or LG G3 if you like something more 'premium'. Costs a bit more at around 400, but you get Australian warranty and a more 'well known' manufacturer. Not a huge difference in performance compared to the latest gen phones.

        • Thanks, I will take a look and see what he thinks. I don't want him spending out $700+ on a premium phone just for the name.

        • @DAN13L:

Also, when buying a phone for a teenager, I can't stress enough the need for a tempered glass screen protector. They go for around $5 on eBay, and I've saved my phone a couple of times with them.

        • Agreed, the last one ended up with a cracked screen within two weeks, glad it was an old one.

        • +2

          @DAN13L:

My kid went through this when we were new in Australia. For him it was more about having what others had which was tough as we were on a tight budget then. So as one poster said, it is more important as a parent to get to the root of the problem not circumvent it.

While OzB is a bargain site, we support each other with all sorts of stuff…Most of us are still in search of Broden to help the bro out..

          Peace !

      • Nothing wrong with a Chinese phone. The awkward part is when other kids notice his/her phone with mic mic iPhone home screen and icons. It's basically advertising to people that his/her phone is a knock-off.

    • +1

Have to second that a new phone isn't the best solution, but this phone will be fine either way. When you are 13 you get what you are given. In fact until you are earning your own money you could say that at any age

    • +1

Can you wait 5 weeks for the phone to be delivered (7- 25 working days…)?

  • +2

Order on Bangood App (Play Store) and get 10% Off making it US $161.99

    mannnnn great deal!

lol Iphone 5s is about to die might just replace it with this one!

    • -3

Serious, your iPhone is about to die and you lol?

      • +19

It's a glorious day! He will be released from the Apple product.

    • don't think you will enjoy the same 4G band coverage that your 5s has though this phone is newer, Chinese phones don't seen to get the 4G coverage that even an old iPhone 5s or Samsung s5 has .

      • +1

Ive managed to get 4g everywhere I used to on my iphne 5 with what appears to be faster speeds (doing speed tests etc)

  • +7

I'm not brave enough to even think how warranty claims would be handled…

    • +1

PayPal for some of the duration at least.

    • Yeh, its complete bullsh@t. I had a warranty claim via Banggodd for a product $180+.they got me to post videos, I wrote a report , emailed….wasted my time. They only offered to update the ROM when it was clear from other users it waw a manufacture issue.I didn't trust them they would have the issue resolved in 6 months, plus the only fix available reduced the performance of the unit. They didn't follow through with there warranty guarantee.

So good luck, the plus side of this deal is that it is Redmi, anyway just hope you don't get the 1 in every 1000 that fails……so do you feel lucky….

    • +1

Depends on your card man, just check the rates yourself before buying :)

      • its almost always better with your cc in my experience, anyways looking to get two for my parents

    •1 x Nillkin H+ Anti-Explosion Glass Screen Protector For Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 AU$12.74

Good to know your screen will survive your battery exploding

    • +1

Without this your phone will explode.

      • +3

phone still explode, just the screen will survive…

  • any issue of band frequency for this phone?

    • +2

      This phone will only work with 2G: GSM 900/1800/1900MHz 3G: WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100MHz 4G: FDD-LTE 1800/2100/2600MHz

Look up what frequencies your carrier uses here: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies

    • I get optus 4G everywhere I used to on my iPhone 5, appears faster too (speed tests and that)

  • -4

This could be such a nice phone but the app drawer is MISSING.
    buyer beware.

  • Yay! 3G 850/900/1900/2100. Rare as rocking horse poop, apparently.

    • but no
•900MHz (B8) FDD (0000000000000080) – Telstra (a handful of sites, utilises spectrum previously used by 2G)
•700MHz (B28) FDD (0000000008000000) – Telstra, Optus (switched on early in a couple of cities, will be widespread in 2015)

really don't know why they don't pick a couple of frequencies… this phone is missing a couple of Telstra 4G frequencies.

      • 4G missing some frequencies is our own fault. Most telecos are using non-standard frequencies here compared to other countries.

  • Anyone have this phone? What's the battery life like?

    • 4 hours SOT

    • +1

I get a full day of fairly regular usage. Depends what you're doing. I watch about an hour of Netflix, 1-2 hrs screen on with games running and 1-2 hrs browsing. Would still have 30%-40% after this though.
Really depends on how u use it and how much is running in the background etc.pp

      • +1

That sounds like much more than 4hrs sot. Nice.

        • -2

I'm finding it kinda hard to believe that he'd still have 30-40% battery left after that much heavy use. Watching a video on youtube for 1 hour on my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact used to deplete it down to around 70% whilst on power saving mode. Playing a game for 1 hr would take that down to 40%ish, 30%ish if it demanded high graphics. Browsing for 2 hours on a Reddit app or websites on Chrome would then completely deplete the battery. I don't think there's many, if any, phones out there that would be able to withstand that much heavy use and still have 30-40% battery to spare. Although…. this does have a 3020mAh battery so who knows, maybe it is on a god tier in regards to battery life.

        • +2

@Isho: these Xiaomi's are good. The efficient Mediatek processors and the no nonsense MIUI helps immensely.

      • +3

My experience is the same on MIUI7.

        • Yeah I'm on the beta too :D

  • Cheaper on Coolicool.

    • And what's the price on hotihot?

    • How so foolifool?

  • Is the price showing up as US$194.99 for anybody else?

    • Yep, that's what it's showing for me on the website and through the app. No coupon either.

  • Deals over.

  • I know I'm late but I will never buy another xiaomi phone ever again, I've had the redmi note 1 for a few months and the speaker has stopped working and the power button is broken. No warranty and no where to get spare parts to fix.

  • Out of interest, anyone received their phone yet?
