  • from nick's website "Lovers of the Johnnie Walker have a new way to enjoy their favourite top shelf whisky. Johnnie Walker 'King George Edition' celebrates the first Royal Warrant granted to John Walker and Sons Ltd to supply Scotch whisky to the British Royal Household in 1934, a recognition of the quality and appeal of its product. The blend is produced according to the same techniques used during the reign of King George V and features only whiskies from distilleries operating during that era, including single malt from such prestigious distilleries as Royal Lochnagar and Port Ellen (the latter which no longer exists. Preserved stocks are extremely expensive due to their scarcity). Packaged in a crystal decanter. A lavish gift for the whisky lover or collector. 43% Alc./Vol."

    and from Dan's website
Johnnie Walker King George V was created to celebrate the Royal Warrant given in 1934 to the Walker family to mark the exceptional qualities of their whiskies. The King George has more restraint and sophistication courtesy of the Port Ellen Distillery component that is powerful, slow and resonant. It initially shows a profound smoky aroma followed by sweet, fresh fruit (apples, pears, bananas) malt characteristics; developing into rich dried fruit and spicy complexity, raisins, figs and cinnamon. The palate is smooth with a rich, fruity sweetness. Warming with subtle flavours of sandalwood and smoke. Taste is powerful, complex, rich yet smooth. A mouth warming and lingering rich peaty finish.

I am waiting for the coke comment.

  • I wonder if Dan Murphy's will price beat them seeing as Nick's website notes that it is imported stock…

    • +9

Um, I'm pretty sure that ALL Scotch Whisky is imported stock…

      • +1

yes - but perhaps this is a grey import
it may not meet the appropriate "australian standards"
it would be a joke if they actually said that - but I would not be surprised

        • Yeah what dr_rusko is what I meant.
I'm not an idiot… kind of like how Officeworks won't price beat grey import iPads.

I really enjoy this drink! I find adding a splash of Dry Ginger Ale brings out it's true flavours!

      Stop trolling

I'm interested to know what else is better than this from your experiences? without ginger ale I mean.

      • Neat?

      • +2

        Depends what you like…
I could tell you 20 single malts I would pick over this any day that are all less than half the price of this…(actually many more than that)
Do you have a starting point (ie a scotch you have tried and liked) so we can work from there?

        • Totally agree, it comes down to personal taste.

I know people who swear by Jameson, Chivas, Johnnie etc and for me, they taste horrid and burn.

Had a beautiful bottle of Old Pulteney 17yr at a wake recently - amazingly smooth.

I don't get into all that 'tastes like fruit/peat/sea' stuff. You like what you like and no reason is necessary. Look for taste testing sessions or a good pub nearby with a whisky collection (they usually run events too - Rob Roy in ADL is good for this if you're local). Also speak with proper whisky suppliers (Nick's are good, as is the Odd Whisky Coy).

        • @Willowtea:

I find the higher end Johnnies, and Chicas quite sweet and "smooth" (most useless adjective for whisky ever) - I just find them boring as hell. Pulteney, on the other hand a whisky, that probably could be called smooth but is also complex and interesting.

You're certainly not alone in your dislike for peated malt. Anyone in the industry that has access to the market research data will tell you that peat-lovers are a minority of the whisky market. Its a taste taht most people never acquire. As a guy that didn't always like peated whiskies I can understand why you wouldn't like it. Before I acquired the taste all i could think when I tasted a laphroaig was "disinfectant".

  • How high quality is the crystal decanter?

  • booo, no discount for buying a dozen!
