Samsung 950 Pro 256/512GB SSD + Belkin 4000mAh Powerbank +$100 eBay - $325/$525 C&C @ Wireless1

100

These are some of the fastest consumer SSD drives on the market.
Note: these connect via an M.2 interface. They're are not SATA or mSATA drives. Your computer will need to accept an M.2 drive and preferably utilise M.2 over the PCIe (PCI express) bus (not necessarily a PCIe port or connector), for the best performance.

  • this is the best deal eva. mSATA ftw

    • +2

      ahhh…. m.2 you mean… these aren't mSATA…

  • Just be aware you need a Z97 or newer chipset to use these things, Z87 and X79 can't boot of them.

    • Asrock a88x killer with the 2.3 bios B version will run this (I use sm951) and boot if installed GPT and use F11 windows manager (selectable with f11 in UEFI not in windows) to set as boot. Runs as PCI x4 ver 3 in first slot when mounted on a m.2 to pci 4 lane card. Ask asrock support for bios its not on the web site.

  • Note the size:
    Max. 80.15 x 22.15 x 2.38 (mm)

The 512GB has a faster write speed than the 256GB.

  • +1

better get it quick before they jack the price up like what they did to the nas, from $200 -> $500

    • +1

Actually, they drop the price of 512GB from $529 to $525 today, should we wait for further price drop instead? ^_^

    Are these macbook pro compatible?

    • No, Macbook Pro uses a proprietary interface.

      • How about the new XPS 15 ultrabook? Thinking about getting one..

        • I can't see any XPS 15 on the Dell Au site. But if it's the same as this spec on the Dell US site then the answer appears to be No.

          Hard Drive
1TB 5400 rpm SATA Hard Drive + 32GB mSATA Solid State Drive

One SATA drive and one mSATA drive. Neither are M.2. It doesn't really sell me as a top end laptop.

The Skylake XPS 15 is due to launch soon, does have an M.2 slot.

        • @O O: Thanks for your reply. I know nothing about these computer stuff, so my question may sound silly. The news mentioned "Storage options include an M.2 PCIe SSD or a hybrid drive". Does this mean the new XPS 15 with hybird drive only support SATA?

        • +3

@baicai: The new XPS 15 has both an SATA bay and an M.2 slot. The M.2 slot is for SSD. The SATA bay is for any 2.5" drive, including hybrid 2.5" SHDD, regular 2.5" HDD, or 2.5" SSD.

The Dell Australia site has withdrawn the Haswell XPS 15 listing, the new Skylake XPS 15 will come soon. So, no information about the configurations is available at the moment. I believe all new XPS 15 does have an M.2 slot.

If you're thinking about getting one, keep an eye on Powerbuy and Cashrewards on coupons for Dell's products.

        • @O O: Talked with two Dell staffs, both of them told me the new XPS 15 with hybird drive can only be compatible with M.2 SSD, not a 2.5 SSD. I m confused, if it is not compatible, how could they use a hybird drive in XPS in the first place….

        • +1

          @baicai:

          The new XPS 15 has
          one 2.5" SATA bay, and
          one M.2 slot

The Dell staffs may mean if the hybrid drive occupied the 2.5" drive bay, only an additional M.2 SSD be added.

Maybe, you can ask Dell staffs to check the technical manual to confirm if new XPS 15 has both a 2.5" SATA bay and an M.2 slot.

  • Anyone know if I can upgrade the HP Spector X360 internal SSD with one of these drives? The one I brought from the Good Guys deal earlier only has a 120 gig drive. Looks like it have a M.2 socket but not sure, here is the one I brought http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-L2Z73PA-Spectre-x360-13-i5-128…

    • Looks like it, check out this thread
Even appears to support PCIe over the M.2 interface so this should be a nice speedy upgrade.

  • Does Wireless1 provide a tax invoice (if you buy through their eBay store)?

  • Jeezus.

Will the 2200MB/s speed be noticible real world over 500 MB/s drives, or is it only noticeable in benchmarks? I would figure other bottlenecks will prevent it from performing at full capability.

    • +1

      Tell you next week :)

    • There are definitely obvious, although subtle, differences between SSDs with 300 vs 500MB/s ratings.

You'll definitely notice a change to 2200MB/s, as long as you aren't bottle necking the drive in an AHCI based M.2 port.

Make sure you're using an X99 or Z170 board with M.2 port that runs over PCIe 3.0 x4, or a PCIe to M.2 adapter add-in card that supports the same PCIe 3.0 x4 bus speed.

      • as long as you aren't bottle necking the drive in an AHCI based M.2 port.

What should it be based on?

Make sure you're using an X99 or Z170 board with M.2 port that runs over PCIe 3.0 x4

Is it the same port as a graphics card?

        • The port will be an M.2 port.
The M.2 port should be based on PCIe bus.
This is different to a PCIe port, which is a PCIe port over PCIe bus.

        • @thedriver: Is M.2 faster/better than PCIe like Intel 750?

        • +1

          @lostn:
M.2 is an inteface or connector.
Similarly, PCIe is also an interface.
The speed of both interfaces totally depends on how they connect to the motherboard chipset.
E.g. PCIe 2.0 4x is significantly slower than PCIe 3.0 16x. But they're both PCIe.

If the M.2 interface on your motherboard uses the PCIe 3.0 x4 bus (which is the same as Intel 750 spec), then it will provide the same maximum speed as the PCIe connector that also uses the PCIe 3.0 x4 bus.

If the M.2 interface in your motherboard uses a slower bus speed, e.g. PCIe 2.0 4x then it will be slower, but only if you have an available PCIe 3.0 x4 connector on your motherboard.

But the Samsung 950 Pro will be a faster drive than the Intel 750 over the same bus.

  • The Samsung m.2 ssd sm951 will work as a boot drive in Asrock AMD a88x killer. It needs a revised bios available from Asrock F288KiP2.30B
Install windows 10 on the ssd as boot drive using GPT format then from EUFI boot (F11)choose windows manager. It also need a M.2 to PCIE adapter and runs as PCIE v3 in the first PCI 4 lane slot

Yes it is fast and tests confirm. Along with 2666 memory and 2TB of ssd and 2x 2TB of WD black works well.
