  • Great price for a great windows phone.

What's a smarthphone? Read the HN description lol.

    • +2

They are getting into the Star wars spirit

  • Can it be upgraded to win10?

  • +1

Says "unlocked" in the description on the HN site: "Vodafone's Lumia 735 unlocked smartphone"

  • nice that it has 700mhz 4G support, unlike a lot of other phones people seem to list.

I'm currently on a Samsung S5 and android 5 but I do miss my windows phone ……… only catch is how good is the screen in sunlight.

    • This phone doesn't have APT700, AKA LTE band 28.

The Lumia 830 and 640 both have band 28. The 640 also has band 40 (2300).

    • think it has an OLED screen? usually pretty good in sunlight.

      • Didn't Nokia deliberately change the contrast of the colours a bit to make them more visiable under sunlight? I thought that was nifty on my old Lumia.

        • +1

my nokia e72 is insane under direct sunlight… you can see everything even when you have the sun reflection on the screen you can still see whats going on although the colours are slightly washed out but hell its great outdoors and i have never seen another phone like it.

        • +2

@Hotkolbas: I think the best part on Lumia was, it changes accordingly depending on how bright the environment is (the washed out colour usually kicks in when the sun's right behind you etc). Also they allowed changes to the colour temperature on Lumia 925 from settings menu (I wish more manufacturers do this) at least.

        • @Hotkolbas: Gee, e72

        • @Jackson:

          yeh an e72.

its an old device but still a great contender for a BB back in its day and i guess is a good alternative for a simple yet powerful device and still does what a smartphone of these days can do and in some cases more than.

        • +1

@Hotkolbas: symbian was great. There was a lot you could do on symbiont, all the features were bespoke and had to work. I used to have a Siemens SL42 and 45, never had a better mp3 player (although you couldn't fit an album on it), one touch voice notes, recorded voice recognition. It all worked. Now I am too lazy to find apps for all that stuff.

  • Does anyone know if this phone (and the 640) are unlockable, even for a small fee?

    • All phones bought from a carrier (if locked) can be unlocked if you pay for the unlock code.

  • OOS ?

  • I owned thia phone before, pretty decent phone

  • +4

Out of stock online, need to go instore so you cant use the voucher.

    • Some will give you the $25 off in store if you are lucky

    • +12

I just called Chadstone- they are out of stock, despite the site saying otherwise.

As for the phone, it's brilliant. I got one to replace my old phone and I couldn't be happier. I'll even write up a review for ya'll

      THE GOOD

      • The form factor/size is excellent. I can reach all parts of the screen easily and it feels comfortable to hold

      • I am running a 64gb sandisc ultra sdxc uhs1 sd card on it without problems. I think it can take an even bigger capacity though. File transfer and things like adding music is a breeze.

      • The screen is beautiful. I have a screen protector on, but the screen is still bright and vivid- the contrast on the screen is probably one of the best I've seen. Blacks/colours pop out

      • It is actually a good "phone", with people reporting to me that they hear my voice on the other end as if i were standing next to them

      • The cameras are very good, particularly the one on inward side. It has a wide lens and is fantastic for selfies. Here's a quick pic- literally point and shoot- that I took at the mordialloc foreshore (using the outward camera)

      • Windows phone software is the easiest I've used- better than ios and android. I have encountered no bugs, everything is very fast and intuitive. The live tiles are just the right size, and I love not having to swipe left and right to see different panes to access apps- here there's only 1 screen, and you just scroll down to see/add more tiles. Also, Cortana, the virtual assistant, is really good. She gets things like "play music", "drive to", "what will the weather be..", "remind me" etc etc.She is linked with google calendar, so you can seamlessly add and access dates between platforms. Finally, the swype keyboard feature is included by default and it's really good. Just swipe your finger vaguely across the letters of the word and it usually figures it out.
In addition, the phone comes with a suite of useful apps. For example, there's a good one where you can snap a picture of a document on your table, and it instantly crops out the table and exports a clear PDF on your form, receipt etc. Very handy. There's also in built mobile data usage apps which are quite accurate.

      • Battery life is 1-2 days on heavy use. Wireless charging capable.

      • The windows phone store is pretty good. Clearly there aren't nearly as many apps as iphone or android, but I have found an app for pretty much everything I want to do- file conversion, file transfer, photo editing, writing, music (spotify) etc etc. There are in fact many excellent native apps like adobe, commbank and netflix, and where there isn't one, often somebody has created a 3rd party one- for example "Steam Live".

      THE BAD
      • The build quality could have been better- specifically the backing, which wraps around and forms the sides as well. I get that it is easily replaceable- $15 genuine on eBay with all colors- but I would have prefered something hardier.

      • The web browser is fast and works well mostly, but it can be buggy sometimes- loading a page, but all I see is a white background. This only happens on some pages sometimes, but I hope it will be fixed with the Windows 10 update which is coming soon

      • There are not very many games on the store, if that bothers anyone. The phone is powerful, and runs the xbox games that are on there well- halo spartan assault, geoDefense and skulls of the shogun being some of my favorites.

      • There is no native youtube app, at all. I think it's due to licensing or some business, but all you get is the website version.

      • The OS may be alienating to those used to iOS or Android, but I found it intuitive. Try it first I think.

      • Not sure that you can easily jailbreak/mod these.

Overall though, excellent value at the sub $200 price.

      • +2

There is no native youtube app, at all

True, but metrotube and mytube are very good alternatives (no ads, woo)

Not sure that you can easily jailbreak/mod these.

On 8.1 not supported by most devices
On 10 though you can interop unlock all lumia phones.

        • +1

metrotube and mytube are very good alternatives (no ads, woo)

          tubecast is really good.

        • @ddhytz:

          yep its pretty great

      • Any advise on what apps to get?

"but I have found an app for pretty much everything I want to do- file conversion, file transfer, photo editing, writing, music (spotify) etc etc"

  • These are great phones for their original price, very featured packed and nice interface, i own one as my current travel phone and does the job nicely. I recommend you ditch the grey housing and source a green or orange housing.

  • +3

I currently have this phone as my main phone. I completely agree with Nextacy and I have the fluoro-orange; No regrets. You can search all over youtube for reviews. I highly recommend this phone due to it's build and how compact it is. I've dropped it from 3m and into a pool of water on my shower floor and it survived. The gorilla glass is top notch and can resist any abrasion. The camera lens will get annoying as the protective film easily comes off but nonetheless, it will surpass expectations for the price of $153 as it surpassed mine at $178

    • I agree with all of the above, have owned for 6 months and very happy fir what I paid.. Only why the orange housing? I went the black as I thought the fluoro colours cheapened the overall feel of the phone.

    • +1

Interesting to hear someone mention the film over the camera lens. I have this phone and the camera was great until marks started appearing on the camera lens after about 3 months. After this photos lost clarity to the point where it wasn't worth taking pictures.

  • not a bad phone for that price.

when are Nokia/Microsoft jumping onto the 2gb-3gb ram bandwagon like current Android phones are doing? - i'd go for it.

    • +5

Windows os is more efficient than android - this phone is fast with just the 1gb. Similar to how the iPhone 6 is smooth with only 1gb

      • -8

Just bought a phone with 4GB ram running on Android. Bet this phone won't be as fast as my iPhone 6 Plus.

    • +1

The 950/xl have 3gb. These phones are more at Moto g price point phones, so have same specs. Flagship windows phones such as the 930 has 2gb and needs it because of the FHD screen. These 720p screen windows phones like Android can get away with 1gb of ram.

  • Only issue I have with the phone, not sure if its os related or phone but does anyone find the browser buggy when selecting from menu options or selecting dropdown boxes within webpages from time to time? Like the screen won't respond to touch.

    • +2

Yeah it's an internet explorer issue on Windows phones. It happens plenty of times on hamburger menus with websites. One website I'll visit the phone will hang for like 10 seconds before opening menu. Hopefully the new browser wm10 is a lot better.

  • If you don't need a Window phone right now, I would advise you to hold off on this one. Australian retailers are not stocking these anymore, infact they are getting rid of them. Microsoft are gearing up to release the new wave of the new Microsoft mobile phones. So Lumia mobile phones (particular 1 GB RAM) won't worth the your bucks. I personally stay away until Microsoft release their new product line.

    • +5

      Hence the special deals.

      • sure it is, might not be in 3 months time!

    • The chances are these 1GB RAM models would constitute the new mid range phones (i.e. there are Snapdragon 210 phones which I think would become the new budget line). I don't think there are many WP models that have more than 1GB RAM (930, 1020, 1520 and models derived from them? + the newly released flagships). Not to mention MS's biggest hit so far (if we can call it that) was with Lumia 52x, so I'd assmue that MS wouldn't pull the plugs on these models any time soon (until they up the spec by introducing better specced model for mid range at least).

Besides, the price is not that bad for a reasonable budget smartphone in my opinion, let alone a mid-range phone.

Drove all the way to Midland,Wa as they were showing stock.Turns out they had one in stock but the sales guy couldn't find it.Rang in advance but no one answered.Wasted journey.Ah,never mind.

    • had this before with HN. I don't trust their online stock check. They'll be happy to sell you something more expensive once they have you instore though

  • +1

i was going to buy a spare/travel phone.
    Out of stock apparently :(

  • Does it have NFC?

  • Got this phone a while ago. Awesome hardware and OS is good too. App support sux balls making it impossible to replace my Android phone. I used it for a month before going back to Android.
